WILDCATS NATIONAL TITLE RUN ENDS IN SWEET 16

By Matt Floyd

The Bethel College Wildcats run at the National Tournament came to an end on Friday with an 89-72 loss to the 7th seed Robert Morris College.

Robert Morris, coming off a first round victory over Menlo College, jumped out to a quick start in the first half, hitting on 18 of 34 shots (52.9%) to build a 48-26 halftime advantage. The Cats, on the other hand, shot only 37.5% from the field and 25% from three-point range. The Wildcats committed 18 crucial turnovers in the half that aided in Robert Morris' offensive surge. Steve Smith led the first half effort with 10 points and 6 rebounds.

The Cats fought hard in the second half outscoring the Eagles 46-41, but just couldn't overcome Robert Morris' hot shooting. Bobby Smith, the NAIA's leading scorer (26 ppg), hit on 9 of 18 shots to end the game with a game high 22 points. Tim Williams added 18 points for the Eagles. Myron McCrary led Bethel with 14 points. Seniors Steve Smith and Matt Rooks ended their careers with 12 points each. Rian Puckett, also playing in his final game as a Wildcat, tossed in 8 points.

Robert Morris College, making its second NAIA National Tournament appearance, improves to 32-5 on the season and advances to the NAIA National quarterfinals where they will take on 2nd seeded Warner Southern.

The Wildcats end a great season with a 24-11 mark, including the programs first ever appearance at the National tournament. The Cats have high hopes for next season, but will miss the leadership of their 5 seniors ... Matt Rooks, Steve Smith, Rian Puckett, Patrick Kince and Eric Schwartz.

The Wildcat players and coaching staff would like to extend a gracious thank you to the area community for the great support throughout the season, the Regional Tournament and at the National Tournament.

LBL to Reopen Wildlife Refuges

Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area will reopen portions of Energy Lake, Rushing Bay, Duncan Bay, Smith Bay, Fulton/Honker Bay Refuge and Long Creek Waterfowl Refuge on March 16.

Portions of some refuges or other areas may remain closed to protect nesting eagles.
"These areas are closed November 1-March 15 as waterfowl and eagle refuges and we appreciate public cooperation in protecting these areas for wildlife," said Steve Bloemer, LBL Wildlife Biologist. "The majority of our wintering eagles and waterfowl are usually gone by early to mid-March, permitting us to reopen the refuges.

Portions of Honker Lake will open March 16; however, the northwest bays will remain closed until May 16 to accommodate nesting geese. Hematite Lake will also be open March 16 for bank fishing.

Special fishing regulations for LBL's interior lakes and ponds can be found in the LBL Angling Information sheet. To obtain an information sheet; stop by any LBL welcome station, contact LBL at 100 Van Morgan Drive, Golden Pond, KY 42211-9001 or call 270-924-2065. Angling information is also available on the LBL web site at www.lbl.org.
