McKenzie's Lady Rebels gained a good start on their 2002
softball season, winning two and losing their third game
at the Hardin County Tournament March 11-12 by a single
run. They then won a victory over Martin Westview last
week at McKenzie Recreation Park by a large margin.
In the Hardin County Tournament, they faced JCM and picked
up a 4-1 victory with Summer Poff gaining the victory as
she struck out three batters. Leading hitters were
Brittany Carpenter and Whitney Townes with two hits each.
The Lady Rebels took a 2-0 lead after two innings and then
picked up two additional runs in the third inning while
allowing a single run by JCM. Townes brought in the two
second inning runs and Poff and Brittany Russell brought
in the third inning runs. McKenzie had nine hits for the
game.
In their second game with Summertown, the Lady Rebels
picked up a 5-4 victory in a seven-inning tiebreaker.
Carpenter was the winner for the McKenzie, striking out
nine opposing batters. The Lady Rebels gained only four
hits in the victory with Poff, Kristin Wiggins, Heidi
Thomas and Russell gaining the hits. McKenzie led off the
scoring with two runs in the second inning on a couple of
errors. Summertown tied the game in the third inning and
then took a 3-2 lead in the fourth. McKenzie gained a pair
of runs and Summertown one in the fifth to tie the game at
four. Brittani Esch gained the winning run in the bottom
of the seventh inning after Angie Birdwell reached base on
an error by the shortstop. Wiggins and Russell were each
credited with a pair of runs. McKenzie's record improved
to 2-0 with the victory.
In their third game at Hardin County, the Lady Rebels lost
a heartbreaker to McNairy Central. Poff pitched four
innings and Carpenter one in relief. Neither team scored
in the first two inings. In the third, McKenzie picked up
a single run. In the fourth inning, the Lady Rebels and
Lady Bobcats picked up four runs each, leaving McKenzie
with a 5-1 lead after four innings. However, in the fifth

Rebels were unable to counter for the 6-5 loss. Wiggins
had a pir of singles to lead the Lady Rebels in hitting.
Amanda Rogers had a triple in the third inning to score
Esch. McKenzie dropped to 2-1 for the season with the
loss. Carpenter was credited with the loss.
The Lady Rebels regular season began on Thursday, March 21
at McKenzie Recreation Park in a game with Martin Westview.
Under extremely cold and windy conditions, the Lady Rebels
were victorious as Poff struck out four batters to gain
her second win of the season. Carpenter and Wiggins led
with three hits each as McKenzie picked up 11 hits
overall. Carpenter had a double and two singles while
Wiggins had three singles. Poff had a double. After a
scoreless first inning, McKenzie took a 4-0 lead in the
second and then led 5-1 after three. Martin picked up two
runs in the fourth inning to narrow the margin to 5-3, but
from that point, McKenzie had the strong batting and
scored the remaining runs for the day. Two runs in the
fifth gave the Lady Rebels a 7-3 lead and four runs in the
sixth inning gave them the 11-3 edge for victory. Townes
