Huntingdon's Mustangs won the battle with county rival
McKenzie last week on a seventh inning homerun by Adam
Parish, 6-5.
The Rebels won the earlier contest in McKenzie by score of
12-11 with the winning runs also coming in the final
inning of the contest. In the latter game, the first
inning found Corren Tippitt hitting a double in the bottom
of the first inning, but unable to score and McKenzie had
a lone single in the top of the inning from Taylor
Holland. In the second inning, McKenzie led off with Jay
Taylor walking and then Brian Toombs hit a homerun to
score the two runs and give McKenzie a 2-0 lead. Rory
Lacey added a single in the inning but was left on base.
In the bottom of the inning, Jacob Smothers, hit the first
of two homeruns for the day to narrow the margin to 2-1.
In the top of the third, Mitchell Hall walked and was left
on base as McKenzie maintained a 2-1 advantage. In the
bottom of the inning however, Parish led off with a single
while Andrew Maddox hit a double. After Tippitt grounded
out and John Taylor flew out, Smothers hit his second
homerun of the day and Huntingdon held a 4-2 advantage as
McKenzie came to bat in the top of the fourth. McKenzie's
only run of the inning came from Lacey who hit a homerun
and narrowed the lead to 4-3. In the bottom of the inning,
the Mustangs had three up and down. In the fifth inning,
Holland led off with a double and then Hall hit a homerun
to score the two runs and give the Rebels a 5-4 lead.
After the Mustangs were unable to score in the bottom of
the inning, the Rebels again came to bat and were also
unable to add to their total. In the bottom of the sixth
however, Brian Nellett hit a homerun and tied the game at
five. McKenzie had a pair of base runners in the top of
the seventh inning, but were unable to get one home,
leaving the score tied at five. Newsome flew out to lead
off the bottom of the inning and then Parish hit a homerun
off McKenzie pitcher Brian Winston (five strikeouts for
the day) and the Stangs had a 6-5 victory. Smothers took
the win for the Mustangs and struck out seven McKenzie
batters.
On Saturday, the Stangs traveled to Martin to play the
Chargers in a non-district game and returned with a 12-2
loss. Smothers and Taylor scored the two Huntingdon runs
in the top of the second inning after Taylor singled and
Smothers Doubles. Both Matt Spellings and Adam Carter had
singles in the inning. Taylor also singled in the top of
the fifth as Huntingdon was held to only five hits for the
day. Spellings pitched four innings and gave up seven runs
while Nellett closed the game in the fifth inning and gave
up five. Westview hit the ball well throughout the game.
Spellings struck out four Chargers while Nellett struck
