The 11th Annual Hunting-don Heritage
Festival, held in downtown Huntingdon Saturday,
was bigger and better than ever with a full day
of fun and entertainment for young and old and
in-between. In keeping with this year’s theme, Mayor Dale
Kelley outlined the history of baseball which,
he said, began in America during the early
1800s. |

Carroll County Chamber of Commerce President Brad Hurley
and new wife Marty enjoy the breezy weather and ample
entertainment of the Huntingdon Heritage Festival.
|
He described the sport as it was played in the
1860s,
about 38 years after the Town of Huntingdon
was established. During these years, he reminded
listeners, the Civil War was fought and baseball became
known as America’s national pastime.
The pitcher was then known as the striker, the
pitcher, a hurler, the catcher a behind and fans
were cranks.
From Huntingdon High School Baseball, Jody
Fuller went on to pitch for two major league
teams, the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Kansas
City Royals; Kris Bennett set the College World
Series records for hits and RBIs while playing
for the UT Vols; and Kennedy White last month
was the winning pitcher in the final
championship game in the European Baseball
Tournament held in Italy. Kennedy was part of
the USA Team of 16 high school players assembled
by the Professional Baseball Institute.
