A
19-year-old McKenzie man was killed at 2:15 a.m. Tuesday
when the motorcycle he was riding struck a road sign at
the intersection of Hinkledale and Winston roads, three
miles west of McKenzie.

South Carroll Relay for Life is

Friday night, July 11, is the big night. It is time for
the fourth annual Relay for Life Celebration for South
Carroll County at Veterans Park in Huntingdon.
Tim Tucker, co-chairman of the event, said the theme of
this year's event is 'Celebrate Life'. Tucker said, "We
have a great opening ceremony." He said that the group
made few changes from the highly successful event last
year. One addition to this year's program is a community
showcase of talent between 8 and 10 p.m. At 10 p.m., the
luminary ceremony will be held followed by the
contemporary Christian group, Jacob's Well performing at
11:00 and 24/Seven at midnight.
The 2002 event raised approximately $156,000. "Last year
was an unbelievable year," said Tucker. He is uncertain
if this year's event can top or match the amount of
money raised.
Take a look at the program. There is something for
everyone all night long. In fact, some of the funniest
events occur after midnight. One only has to attend the
Womanless Beauty Revue at 3:30 A.M. to see that
Huntingdon does indeed have night life.
Opening ceremonies begin promptly at 7 p.m. However,
many of the Relay for Life teams will be ready to serve
food around 5 p.m. Plan to eat with the teams and help
raise funds in the fight against cancer.Public
parking will be available at two locations. One is the
Imogene (Mrs. Waldon) White property located at 382 High
Street. Visitors should follow the signs on High Street
and give particular attention to the directional signs
once entering the White property. The second location is
the Barksdale Property located directly opposite the
entrance to Veterans Park. In case of rain, parking will
be at the old Wal-Mart parking lot on East Main Street.
Shuttle service will be provided.
MEMORIAL STONES FOR THE RELAY FOR LIFE FOUNTAIN
As you attend the July 11 celebration, be sure to take a
look at the Relay for Life Memorial Fountain under
construction as you enter the Park. You can still
purchase stones and permanently memorialize a friend or
family member. The fountain is constructed of concrete
with brick columns and attached wrought iron. Inscribed
bricks are inlaid to provide a lasting memorial. Contact
Pat Dillahunty at 986-8847, 986-4544, or Tim Tucker
986-2228 to make a purchase or for more details.
New Commemorative Pins On Sale
A new item is available to commemorate Relay for Life.
One of Relay's biggest supporters has arranged to have a
limited supply of black lacquered handpainted pins made
in the Ukraine. They include the state flower, the
Tennessee Iris, and they also include the inscription,
"Relay for Life 2003". Go by City Drug for a look and to
make a purchase. They are $10 each. |

A McKenzie Regional Ambulance Service paramedic was
injured when he was struck by falling fireworks' debris
during the City of McKenzie Independence Day Show at
McKenzie Recreational Park Friday.
Brinnen Murray of McKenzie was treated at McKenzie
Regional Hospital emergency room for a third degree burn
on his leg. He was then released and reportedly had to
return home before finishing his shift, according to MRH
Ambulance Service Director Chuck Latimer.
Ironically, two crews from McKenzie Regional Ambulance
Services were on standby at the park to assist any
individuals who might need medical assistance during the
celebration. Other paramedics and EMTs at the scene were
Dean Hargrove, David Thomason and William Bullington.
No other incidents occurred during the annual event. |
