H.B. “Swat” Scarbrough
1914-2003
MCKENZIE: Services for H.B. “Swat” Scarbrough were
held on Friday, August 8 at 2:00 p.m. at the First
United Methodist Church with Rev. Dossie Wheatley and
Rev. Harrell Nation officiating. Burial followed in Mt.
Olivet Cemetery.
Mr. Scarbrough, a retired businessman, died Wednesday,
August 6 at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital. He
was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the
Lions Club and was a Mason. He served on the McKenzie
City Council for numerous years and was the Mayor of
McKenzie for ten years. He was also inducted into the
Bethel College Sports Hall of Fame in 1999.
He is survived by his son, Hugh Scarbrough of
Huntingdon, his daughter-in-law Larenda Scarbrough and
two grandchildren, Brad and Mary Margaret Scarbrough.
Mr. Scarbrough was preceded in death by his wife,
Margaret Carter Scarbrough, his parents, Samuel P. and
Lenora Montgomery Scarbrough and a daughter, Emily
Crandall.
The family request memorials for Mr. Scarbrough be made
to the First United Methodist Church or Bethel College.
Brummitt Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Lonnie Martin Murphy
1918-2003
HUNTINGDON: Mr. Lonnie Martin Murphy, 84, died on
Tuesday, August 5 at the Jackson-Madison County General
Hospital. Funeral services were conducted on Thursday,
August 7 at 10:00 a.m. in the Chase Funeral Home Chapel
with Bro. Johnny Burns officiating. Interment followed
in the Seventh Day Adventist Cemetery.
The handlers and folders of the American flag were Sgt.
Chad Perry, SPC Aaron Satchwill and the presentation was
done by Cpt. Walton A. Moore.
Mr. Murphy was born on October 26, 1918 in Carroll
County to the late John Erin and Cora Esther Kelly
Murphy. He was a World War II army veteran who served in
the South Pacific and received the World War II Victory
Medal, Asian Pacific Theater Medal, American Defense
Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, one Bronze Star,
Republic of the Philippines Presidential Unit Citation
Badge and was able to wear five Overseas Bars. He was
also preceded in death by one son, Lonnie Murphy; one
sister, Jewel Dean Murphy, and three brothers, Otis
Murphy, Johnny Lee Murphy and one infant brother.
Survivors include his wife, whom he married May 24,
1945, Nancy Rogers Murphy; one daughter, Janice Foster
of Huntingdon; two sons, Ronnie Lynn Murphy and Marty
Lane Murphy, both of Cedar Grove; one sister, Ella V.
Dunagan of Bartlett; six grandchildren and four
great-grandchildren.
Ernest Gordon Holladay
1926-2003
BRUCETON: Mr. Ernest Gordon Holladay, 76, died on
Thursday, July 31 at his home. Funeral services were
conducted on Saturday, August 2 at 1:00 p.m. in the
Chase Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. J.L. Fortner and
Rev. John Columbus officiating. Interment followed in
the Palmer Shelter Cemetery.
Mr. Holladay was born October 3, 1926 in Carroll County
to the late Ernest and Algie Crider Holladay. He was a
retired truck driver for the Henry I. Siegel Company and
a member of the Clarksburg Missionary Baptist Church. He
was also preceded in death by two sister, Inell Sanders
and Mozell Williams and four brothers Henry Dee
Holladay, Audraine Holladay, James Holladay, and Holbert
Laws.
Survivors include one son, Eddie Holladay of Huntingdon,
a longtime companion, Lorraine Lloyd of Bruceton; three
grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
Louise Pritchard
1920-2003
MCKENZIE: Services for Louise Pritchard, 82, were at
11:00 a.m., Friday, August 8 at Brummitt Funeral Home
with burial in the Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
Mrs. Pritchard, a BellSouth telephone operator for 35
years, died Wednesday, August 6 at NHC Healthcare in
Milan.
She was born August 29, 1920 in Carroll County to the
late Mila Bell Dailey Wilson and Edward Frank Wilson.
She attended McKenzie Church of Christ and was a member
of the Telephone Pioneers of America.
Survivors include her husband, Paul Pritchard; a son,
Don Pritchard of Memphis; a daughter, Linda Spain of
Gleason; grandchildren Mike and Mark Spain and
great-granddaughter, Allyson Spain.
James Austin “Pee Wee” Fesmire
1934-2003
ATWOOD: Services for Mr. James Austin “Pee Wee”
Fesmire, 69, were at 2:00 p.m., Friday, August 8 at the
Bodkin Funeral Home with burial in the Howse Baptist
Church Cemetery.
Mr. Fesmire, a retired employee of the Milan Arsenal,
died on Wednesday, August 6 at his home. He was a member
of the Howse Baptist Church in Atwood.
Survivors include his wife, Robbie Fesmire of Atwood; a
daughter, Sheila Gardner of Milan; two brothers, Odean
Fesmire of Lexington and Leotha Fesmire of Trezevant;
three sisters, Pearline Hamilton, Lucille Hamilton and
Elsie Franklin, all of Lexington; and two grandchildren.
Thelma Craig Lowe
1918-2003
BRUCETON: Services for Thelma Craig Lowe, 84, were
at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, August 3 at Bruceton Funeral Home
Chapel with Bro. Kim Lowe officiating. Burial was in the
New Hope Cemetery in Vale.
Mrs. Lowe died on Thursday, July 31 at the Community
Hospital in Lexington.
She was born August 3, 1918 in Hagersville to the late
Luther and Sadie McDaniel Craig. She was a Baptist.
Survivors include a daughter, Louise Woods of
Wildersville; three sons, Edward “Cotton” Lowe of
Huntingdon, Donald Lowe of Wildersville and Kenneth
“Fish” Lowe of Hollow Rock; a brother, Edward Craig of
Paris; fourteen grandchildren and twenty
great-grandchildren.
Hester Gray Wilkes
1912-2003
HUNTINGDON: Mrs. Hester Gray Wilkes, 91, died on
Saturday, August 9 at the Life Care Center in Bruceton.
Services were conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, August
10 in the Dilday Funeral Home Chapel with Elder Lynn
Stapleton officiating. Interment followed in the Davis
Chapel Cemetery.
Mrs. Wilkes was born on May 12, 1912 to the late Rice
and Lela Jane Robison Hampton. She was also preceded in
death by her husband, Hershel Brown Wilkes; a son, Larry
Dale Wilkes and a granddaughter, Jennifer Melton. She
was a retired employee of Publix Shirt Company and a
member of the Huntingdon Missionary Baptist Church.
She is survived by one daughter, Jane Cole of McKenzie;
two sons, Darrell Wilkes and Hershel Wilkes, Jr., both
of Huntingdon; five grandchildren and seven
great-grandchildren.
Larry G. Wainscott
1949-2003
McKENZIE: Larry G. Wainscott, 54, of McKenzie, died
Wednesday, August 6, at The Med in Memphis. Funeral
services for Mr. Wainscott were held Friday, August 8,
at 3:00 p.m. at McKenzie Church of Christ with Bro. Jim
Roberts officiating. Burial followed in Mt. Olivet
Cemetery in McKenzie.
Mr. Wainscott was a truck driver, as well as a member of
McKenzie Church of Christ. He was born January 10, 1949
in Martin.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy Wainscott of McKenzie;
a son, Rusty Wainscott of McKenzie; a daughter, Shari
Summers; three brothers, Mike Wainscott of Somerville,
Tennessee, Terry Wainscott of McKenzie, and Tim
Wainscott of San Diego, California; and three
grandchildren.
