Selena Devault
1977-2003
HOLLOW ROCK: Services for Selena Devault, 26, were
at 3:00 p.m., Monday, June 16 at Bruceton Funeral Home
Chapel with the Rev. Roy N. Hayes, Sr. officiating.
Burial was in Prospect Cemetery in Hollow Rock.
Miss Devault, an emergency medical dispatcher in
Waverly, died on Saturday, June 14 at Baptist Memorial
Hospital in Huntingdon.
She was born May 21, 1977 in Jackson. She was an
American Heart Association Health Care provider.
Survivors include her parents Sherman and Beth Devault
of Hollow Rock; a bother, Jeremy Devault of Hollow Rock;
maternal grandfather Edward Cary and paternal
grandmother, Virginia Devault, both of Hollow Rock.
Walden Huell “Preacher” Laws
1931-2003
HUNTINGDON: Mr. Walden Huell “Preacher” Laws, 71,
died on Saturday, June 14 at Jackson-Madison County
General Hospital. Funeral services were conducted on
Tuesday, June 17 at 10:00 a.m. in the Chase Funeral Home
Chapel with Bro. L.D. Willis officiating. Interment
followed in the Sellers Hill Cemetery.
Mr. Laws was born on July 10, 1931 in Carroll County to
the late Gothe Grecian and Sophia Virgie Crider Laws. He
was a farmer and a member of the Church of Christ.
Survivors include his wife, whom he married on June 5,
1954, Dorothy Pritchard Laws; two daughters, Sherry
Carwile of Jackson and Kimberly Laws of McKenzie; two
sons, Kerry Don Laws of McKenzie and Timothy Lynn Laws
of Nashville; three sisters, Evola Thompson, Dorothy
Sanders and Juanita McCord, all of Huntingdon; four
brothers, Odell Laws of Nashville, John Laws of
Palatine, Illinois, Joe Laws and Wilburn Laws, both of
Huntingdon; six grandchildren and two
great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations
be made to one of the following organizations: Carl
Perkins Center, St. Judes Children’s Hospital or the
American Cancer Society.
Pauline Haywood Webb Hall
1907-2003
CEDAR GROVE: Mrs. Pauline Haywood Webb Hall, 96,
died on Thursday, June 12 at the Huntingdon Health and
Rehabilitation Center. Funeral services were conducted
on Sunday, June 14 at 2:00 p.m. at Shiloh Missionary
Baptist Church with Brother Ronnie Stewart and Brother
Edd Tubbs officiating. Interment followed in the church
cemetery.
Mrs. Hall was born May 7, 1907 in Carroll County to the
late John and Gertrude Evans Haywood. She was a
homemaker and a member of the Shiloh Missionary Baptist
Church. She was preceded in death by her first husband,
Earl Vernon Webb and later by her second husband,
Calvert Hall; a daughter, Helen Prater and a son, Robert
Earl Webb.
Survivors include one daughter, Juanita Hammett of
Shiloh; five grandchildren and eleven
great-grandchildren.
Dilday Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Lavona Brinkley
1933-2003
HOLLOW ROCK: Mrs. Lavona Brinkley, 69, died on
Wednesday, June 11 at her home. Funeral services were
conducted on Saturday, June 14, at 2:00 p.m. at the
Chase Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Robert Simmons and
Bro. Johnny Boyd officiating. Interment followed in the
Prospect Cemetery in Hollow Rock.
Mrs. Brinkley was born on November 16, 1933 in Camden to
the late John Thomas and Barbara Cox Johnson. She was a
homemaker and a member of the Westport Missionary
Baptist Church. She was also preceded in death by four
brothers, Elgie Johnson, Lester Johnson, John Thomas
Johnson, Jr., and Coleman Johnson and one sister, Nellie
Johnson.
Survivors include her husband, who she married on June
30, 1956, Leonard Brinkley; one daughter, Sandra Henley;
one son, David Brinkley, all of Hollow Rock; three
sisters, Opal Ridley of McKenzie, Ora Medlin and Gladys
Shannon, both of Camden; one brother, Clayton Johnson of
Muskegon, Michigan and two granddaughters.
Frances Mills York
1918-2003
PULASKI: Graveside services for Mrs. Francis Mills
York, 84, were held on Wednesday, June 11 at 10:00 a.m.
at the Giles Memory Garden in Pulaski.
Mrs. York, a homemaker, died on Monday, June 9 at the
Sunbridge Nursing Home in Lawrenceburg.
He was born in Higgins, Texas on November 8, 1918 to the
late Gust and Mina Post Sletz.
Survivors include one daughter, Pat Bowen of Pulaski;
one stepdaughter, Barbara Todd of Indio, California; one
stepson, Bob York of Parker Arizona; three
grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and three
step-grandchildren.
Carr & Erwin Funeral Home was in charge of the
arrangements.
Malinda Wright
1909-2003
BRUCETON: Mrs. Malinda Wright, 94, died on Tuesday,
June 20 at the Baptist Memorial Hospital in Huntingdon.
Funeral services were conducted on Thursday, June 12 at
2:00 p.m. at the Ephesus Baptist Church with Bro. Arzell
Douglas officiating. Interment followed in the
Massey-Liles Cemetery in Hollow Rock.
Mrs. Wright was born on January 6, 1909 in Henry County
to the late Augustus Burkett and Molly Cole Grissom. She
was a homemaker and a member of the Ephesus Baptist
Church. She was also preceded in death by her husband,
Johnny Clifford Wright, who died in 1955.
Survivors include six daughters, Frances Marie Massey,
Johnie E. Newhouse, Lois Kee, Rachel Reed, all of
Bruceton; Hazel M. Marshall of Camden and Norma Milligan
of Sumter, South Carolina; one son, Edward Wright of
Seattle, Washington; fourteen grandchildren, nineteen
great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
Chase Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Roy Milton Roper
1926-2003
MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN: Services for Roy Milton Roper,
77, were at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 3, at Graceland
Church of Christ in Milwaukee with the Rev. Henderson
Woods officiating. Interment was in Veteran’s Memorial
Cemetery in Union Grove, Wisconsin.
Mr. Roper died on Tuesday, May 27.
He was born April 11, 1926 in McKenzie to the late Clint
and Nora Roper. He received his formal education at Webb
High School and was a member of the Graceland Church of
Christ.
Mr. Roper enlisted in the United States Army and served
during World War II. He was honorably discharged due to
an injury sustained during the war.
Survivors include one daughter, Fairene Simmons; two
sisters, Lizzie Rogers and Erma Humphrey; two
grandchildren, several nephews and one niece. Preceding
him in death were one brother, James Roper and two
sisters, Grace Roper and Ruthie Mae Roper.
Juanita R. Johnson
1925-2003
MCKENZIE: Services for Juanita R. Johnson, 78, were
at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, June 15 at Johnson Temple CME
Church with the Rev. H.L. Cunningham officiating. Burial
was in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Trinity Funeral Home of
Paris was in charge of the arrangements.
Mrs. Johnson died on Saturday, June 7 at Oak Manor
Nursing Home in McKenzie.
She was born May 18, 1925 in McKenzie to the late
Charlie Rutherford and Virginia Rutherford. She was a
graduate of Webb High School, a member of Johnson Temple
CME Church where she was elected trustee, served as
missionary president and was a member of the senior
choir.
Survivors include two sisters, Mattie D. Walker of Bell
Glade, Florida and Victoria Pulliam of Jackson; a
brother, Milton Strayhorn of McKenzie; several nieces
and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Thomas
Abraham Johnson; a sister, Earlie M. Pate and two
brothers, Addie Rutherford and Charles Rutherford.
Candyce Diane Clifford “Candy” Richards
1949-2003
TREZEVANT: Mrs. Candyce Diance Clifford “Candy”
Richards, 54, died on Sunday, June 15 at Jackson-Madison
County General Hospital. Funeral services will be
conducted on Wednesday, June 18 at the Dilday Funeral
Home Chapel. Cremation and entombment will follow in the
Carroll Memorial Gardens.
Mrs. Richards was born January 8, 1949 in Carroll
County. She was a medical records specialist for the
Jackson Clinic.
Survivors include her parents, Escoe and Carol Chute
Clifford of Huntingdon; two daughters, Theresa Grimes of
Humboldt and Michelle Lamb of McKenzie; one son, Michael
Mulligan of Trezevant; her former spouse, Jim Richards
of Trezevant; one stepdaughter, Apryl Richards of
Seattle, Washington and one stepson, Paul Richards of
Virginia Beach, Virginia; one sister, Debra Musgrove of
Dallas, Texas; one brothers, Escoe Clifford III of
Trezevant; four grandchildren; two step-grandchildren,
an aunt and uncle and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 4:00-8:00 p.m. on
Tuesday at the funeral home.
Nellie Lyons
1915-2003
PARIS: Services for former Paris resident Nellie
Lyons, 87, of the Courtyard Community Center in Fulton
Mississippi were at 3:00 p.m., Monday, June 16 at McEvoy
Funeral Home with her grandson, Bobby Campbell of
McKenzie officiating. Burial followed in Bevil Cemetery.
Mrs. Lyon died on Saturday, June 14 at North Mississippi
Medical Center in Tupelo, Mississippi.
She was born August 27, 1915 in West Virginia to the
late William David Williamson and Liza Jane Thomas
Williamson. She was married in June, 1930 to Hezzie E.
Lyons, who died in May, 1973.
Mrs. Lyons worked for Mar-Kel Lighting, formerly of
Paris and was a homemaker. While a resident of
Mississippi, she worked as a sitter and was a member of
the Fulton First Baptist Church.
Survivors include four daughters, Marjorie Wheeler of
Fulton, Paula Mays of Holly Springs, Mississippi, and
twins Mary Lou Banks of McKenzie and Ida Sue Lowery of
Belle Rive, Illinois; two sons, Durwood Lyons of
Centerville and Bill Lyons of New Albany, Mississippi;
fifteen grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, five
step-great-grandchildren and several
great-great-grandchildren. Three grandchildren also
preceded her in death.
