James Bennett Garner
1923-2003
CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA: James Bennett Garner, 79,
formerly of McLemoresville, died Sunday, May 25 at
Northbrook Manor Care Center, following a long illness.
Cremation was at Cedar Memorial, Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Brummitt Funeral Home, McKenzie was in charge of the
local arrangements. Graveside services were at the
McLemoresville Cemetery on Saturday, May 31 at 1:00 p.m.
Mr. Garner was preceded in death by his parents, William
Elbert Garner and Eddis D. Garner, a brother, Russell E.
Garner, a sister, Rachel Woodard and a niece Shirley
Herndon. Survivors include a sister, Mary William
(Molly) Barger of Cedar Grove; children James B. Garner,
Jr. of South Korea, Suzanne Garner of Santa Clara,
California and Patricia G. Neville of Cedar Rapids;
grandchildren Peter Clark of Tempe, Arizona, David Mead
of Bristol, England and Rosie Garner of England and many
nieces and nephews.
Jim was born June 14, 1923, the youngest child of
William Elbert and Eddis D. (Lawrence) Garner of
McLemoresville. He graduated from McLemoresville High
School in 1942 and attended college at Lambuth
University in Jackson before enlisting in the Army Air
Corps. He served as a radio operator in Europe and
Northern Africa during World War II. He received a B.S.
degree from Murray State College, Murray, Kentucky in
1948 and was a member of Alpha Psi Omega Dramatic
Fraternity. He received a M.A. degree from Memphis State
University, Memphis in 1959. Jim was active in scouting
and served as a scoutmaster. His long career in
education began as a teacher and progressed to
superintendent of schools. He worked in schools in
Tennessee, Oregon, New Mexico, Missouri, Iowa and
Nebraska. Jim was a lifelong learner with a lively sense
of humor and a love of language. He enjoyed history,
gardening, bird watching, antiques and flea markets. He
was a member of the Gadsden, TN Church of Christ.
Michel David Levy
1950-2003
MARTIN: Mr. Michel David Levy, 52, died on Tuesday,
May 27 at his home.
Mr. Levy was born on November 6, 1950 in Cambridge,
Maine. He was a librarian for the George Mason
University. He was preceded in death by his mother, Ruth
Stein Levy.
He is survived by his wife, Jennifer Yates Levy, two
daughters, Rachel Levy and Vivian Levy, both of Martin
and his father, Berthald K. Levy.

Susie Elizabeth Parham
1915-2003
CEDAR GROVE: Mrs. Susie Elizabeth Parham, 87, died
on Thursday, May 29 at the Huntingdon Health and
Rehabilitation Center. Funeral services were conducted
on Saturday, May 31 at 2:00 p.m. at the Leach Seventh
Day Adventist Church with Brother Ray Kelly officiating.
Interment followed in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Parham was born August 15, 1915 in Wildersville to
the late Crawford and Bertha Kelly Ledsinger. She was
the administrator for the Carroll County Nursing Home
and a member of the Leach Seventh Day Adventist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clark Parham,
who passed away on February 6, 1976; two sisters,
Mildred Dunn and Opal Fry and one grandson.
Survivors include one daughter, Janice Watson of
Huntingdon; five sons, Billy Parham and David Parham,
both of Huntingdon, Jackie Parham of Cedar Grove, Jimmy
Parham of Bartlett and Ronnie Parham of Hickory Hill,
Illinois; 13 grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren, 17
great-grandchildren; 14-step-great-granchildren and two
step-great-great-grandchildren.
Dilday Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
John Walter Foreman
1918-2003
BRUCETON: Services for John Walter Foreman, 84, were
at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, May 31 at the Bruceton Funeral
Home with the Rev. James Daniel officiating. Burial was
in the Prospect Cemetery.
Mr. Foreman, a retired truck driver for Detroit Edison
in Detroit Michigan died on Friday, May 30 at the Life
Care Center in Bruceton.
He was born August 15, 1918 in Detroit, Michigan to the
late Thomas John Foreman and Telophia Stella Marcz
Foreman. He was a World War II Navy veteran and a member
of the Prospect Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Higdon Foreman; one
daughter, Patsy Crockett of Huntingdon; a sister, Helen
Allen of St. Petersburg, Florida and two grandchildren.
Clara Smothers King
1934-2003
BRUCETON: Services for Clara Smothers King, 68, were
at 2:00 p.m., Friday, May 30 at Bruceton First Baptist
Church with the Rev. Terry Bradshaw officiating. Burial
was in the Carroll Memorial Gardens in McKenzie.
Mrs. King, a retired dietician for Baptist Memorial
Hospital in Huntingdon, died on Wednesday, May 28 at
Alive Hospice in Nashville.
She was born October 15, 1934 in Westport to the late
Delmar Ras Smothers and Alma Odell Clark Smothers. She
was a member of the Bruceton First Baptist Church, Order
of the Eastern Star Adah Chapter #314 and The Carroll
County Republican Executive Committee.
Survivors include her husband, Robert Murrell King; a
daughter, Elissa Wiliams of Burns; two sons, Mike C.
King of Hendersonville and Mark F. King of Bruceton; a
brother, Lyndel E. Smothers of Bruceton and five
grandchildren. Bruceton Funeral Home was in charge of
the arrangements.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Sherrill C.
Smothers.
Nathaniel McKinney Watson
1914-2003
HUNTINGDON: Services for Nathaniel McKinney Watson,
88, were at 11:00 a.m., Friday, May 30 at St. Paul
Missionary Baptist Church with burial in the church
cemetery. Wake services were on Thursday, May 29.
Survivors included his wife, Nellie Dean Thomas; a
daughter, Alberta Brown of Richton Park, Illinois; two
sisters, Elizabeth Crosby of Cleveland, Ohio and Rosie
Lee Bursey of Mt. Clemens, Michigan; and two brothers,
Charles Watson, Jr. of Cleveland, Ohio and John Henry
Watson of Carson, California.
Bond Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Irene Barker
1920-2003
MCKENZIE: Services for Irene Barker, 82, were at
2:00 p.m., Thursday, May 29 at Union Academy Baptist
Church with Bro. Paul Merwin officiating. Burial was in
the church cemetery.
Mrs. Barker, a homemaker and farmer, died on Tuesday,
May 27 at McKenzie Regional Hospital.
She was born on November 27, 1920 in Carroll County to
the late Gertie Mann Bush and Rob Bush. She was a member
of the Union Academy Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Lyndle Barker of McKenzie
and Billy Barker of Trezevant; two brothers, Austin Bush
and Billy Ray Bush, both of McKenzie; a sister, Evora
Bryant of McKenzie; three grandchildren, Jamie Barker,
Timothy Barker and Angie Barker and four
great-grandchildren.
Robert Louis Alexander
1936-2003
PARIS: Services for Robert Louis Alexander, 66, were
at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, June 1 at Trinity Funeral Home in
Paris with the Rev. Terry Woodruff officiating. Burial
was in the Greenwood Cemetery.
Mr. Alexander died on Thursday, May 29 at Vanderbilt
Hospital in Nashville.
He was born October 19, 1936 in Henry. He was a member
of the Union Grove Missionary Baptist Church and
attended local school systems.
Survivors include his mother, Lennie Huffman of Paris;
two daughters, Jacqueline Alexander of Lebanon and
Angela Alexander of Atlanta, Georgia; a son, Elijah
Alexander of Atlanta, Georgia; three sisters, Lina Gary
and Annie Coats, both of Toledo, Ohio and Elena Rowe of
Paris; a brother, Willie Huffman of McKenzie; five
grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and several
nieces and nephews.
Annie Kathryn Burrow
1918-2003
MCKENZIE: Services for Annie Kathryn Burrow, 84,
will be at 10:00 a.m., Friday, June 6 at Shiloh
Cumberland Presbyterian Church with Bro. Jim McGuire
officiating. Burial will follow in the Shiloh Cemetery.
Visitation will be on Thursday, June 5 from 5:00-9:00
p.m. at the funeral home and Friday, June 6 from 9:00
a.m. until the service at the church.
Mrs. Burrow, a homemaker, died on Sunday, June 1 at
McKenzie Regional Hospital.
She was born November 30, 1918 in Vale to the late Sibyl
Ware Simmons and Elmer David Simmons. She was a member
of the Shiloh Cumberland Presbyterian Church in
McKenzie.
Survivors include two daughters, Sibyl Reynolds of
Independence, Missouri and Mary Gray of Huntingdon; a
sister, Doris Oliver of Paris; four grandchildren, Eric
Reynolds, Robin R. Rao, Suzanne Reynolds and Esther Gray
and five great-grandchildren William Reynolds, Vanessa
Reynolds, Jacob Reynolds, Jeremy Reynolds and Emma
Reynolds.
All personal friends of John Ples and Kathryn Burrow

She was also preceded in death by her husband, John Ples
Burrrow.

Harlos White Smith
1926-2003
HUNTINGDON: Mr. Harlos White Smith, 77, died on
Sunday, June 1 at the Life Care Center in Bruceton.
Funeral services were conducted on June 3 in the Dilday
Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Lloyd Ray Rich
officiating. Interment followed in the Palmer Shelter
Cemetery.
Mr. Smith was born on February 26, 1926 in Carroll
County to the late Douglas and Cora Weaver Smith. He was
a timber cutter for J.D. Hall Logging. He was preceded
in death by a granddaughter, Jodie Marie Smith, three
sisters, Marie Williams, Dorothy Hall, and Peggy Smith
and one brother, Jim Smith.
Survivors include two daughters, Sandra Hudgins, and
Melinda Carter, both of Huntingdon; one son, Kevin Smith
of Gleason; three sisters, Imogene Sanders and Lucille
Kee, both of Huntingdon and Robbie Judd of Nashville;
two brothers, J.D. Smith of Huntingdon and Roy Smith of
Nashville; seven grandchildren and one
great-granddaughter.
Charles E. Hastings
1935-2003
MANSFIELD: Services for Charles Edward Hastings, 67,
will be at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, June 4 at Mansfield
Baptist Church with the Revs. Jimmy Allison and Warren
Sykes officiating. Interment will follow in the Shiloh
Cemetery in Mansfield.
Mr. Hastings died of cancer on Sunday, June 1 at
Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville. He was retired
from the Tennessee Department of Corrections and was the
former owner of West Tennessee Printing and Paris Tire
and Used Cars.
He and his wife were foster parents with the Tennessee
Department of Children’s Services for more than 20
years. They fostered more than 300 children and he was
the northwest regional director for the Tennessee Foster
Adoptive Care Association.
He was born in Henry County on August 4, 1935 to the
late Luther and Hallie Ford Hastings.
Survivors include his wife, the former Betty Daigle and
one son, Michael Charles Hastings. |
