Tommy Morphis
1948-2003
WESTPORT: Mr. Thomas Atlas "Tommy" Morphis, 54, died on
Wednesday, March 12 at his home. Funeral services were
conducted on Friday, March 14 at 2:00 p.m. in the Chase
Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Wayne Burton officiating.
Interment followed in the Prospect Cemetery.
Mr. Morphis was born on November 27, 1948 in Bruceton to
the late Leon and Ophelia York Morphis. He was a Marine
Corps veteran with service in Vietnam and a recipient of
the Purple Heart.
Survivors include his daughter, Tonya Lynn Sawyer of
McKenzie; one sister, Chris Black of Westport and three
grandchildren.
Jan Gurley
1975-2003
CLARKSBURG: Miss Jan Gurley, 27, died on Saturday, March
15 at the Methodist Central Hospital in Memphis. Funeral
services were conducted on Tuesday, March 18 at 1:00
p.m. in the Dilday Funeral Home Chapel with Brother
Charles Thomason and Brother Mark Simon officiating.
Interment followed in Sellers Hill Cemetery.
Miss Gurley was born on July 22, 1974 in Huntingdon. She
was a volunteer aid at the Clarksburg School and a
member of the Roans Creek Church of Christ. Her
grandparents, Oder and Corene Gurley and James Thomas
and Lessie Harris and several aunts and uncles preceded
her in death.
Survivors include her parents, Orbra and Sue Carol
Gurley of Clarksburg; one brother, Glen Gurley of
Huntingdon; one sister Tena Halter of Clarksburg; four
nieces and nephews; and several aunts and uncles.

James Bayless Hill
1912-2003
HUNTINGDON: Mr. James Bayless Hill, 91, died on Tuesday,
March 11 at McKenzie Healthcare Center. Funeral services
were conducted on Friday, March 14 at the Dilday Funeral
Home Chapel with Brother Scott Carter officiating.
Interment followed at Bethlehem Cemetery.
Mr. Hill was born on January 30, 1912 in Carroll County
to the late Roscoe and Manda Lee Vaughn Hill. He was a
retired employee of Sunstrand. Two sisters, Ivy Lee
Perritt and Lela Mae Chandler, preceded him in death.
Survivors include one sister, Mary Laverne Kirk of
Bartlett; one brother, Tommie Hill of Huntingdon and

Frank L. "Bobby" Ridley, Sr.
1929-2003
MCKENZIE: Services for Frank L. "Bobby" Ridley, Sr., 74,
were at 3:00 p.m., Sunday, March 16 at Brummitt Funeral
Home with Bro. Bill Evans officiating. Interment
followed in Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
Mr. Ridley, a retired employee of the Milan Arsenal,
died on Friday, March 14 at the McKenzie Regional
Hospital.
He was born February 14, 1929 in Dearborn, Michigan to
the late Ila Mann Ridley and Otto Ridley. He formerly
served as McKenzie Fire Chief for 31 years, a freight
agent with Railroad Express Agency, headquartered at
McKenzie Depot for 27 years, was a member of the Shiloh
Cumberland Presbyterian Church in McKenzie and was also
business manager at the McKenzie Hospital for eight
years.
Survivors include a son, Frank Ridley, Jr. of McKenzie;
two daughters, Carol Simpson of Jackson and Jan Loy of
Knoxville; two brothers, Joe Ridley and Dewayne Ridley,
both of McKenzie; a sister, Joyce Driskell of Decatur,
Alabama; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Johnie Stephens
1914-2003
NORTH LITTLE ROCK, ARKANSAS: Services for Mr. Johnie
Stephens, 88, formerly of McKenzie, were held at 2:00
p.m., Tuesday, March 18 at the McKenzie Church of
Christ. Mr. Stephens, a devoted husband and beloved
father, grandfather and great-grandfather, died on
Saturday night, March 15 at Baptist Memorial Hospital in
North Little Rock, Arkansas. He was a former member of
the McKenzie Church of Christ and presently a member of
the Somers Avenue Church of Christ in North Little Rock,
Arkansas.
He was born on June 27, 1914 in Weakley County to the
late Arch and Jennie Stephens. Mr. Stephens was preceded
in death by a brother, Wilson Stephens; a sister, Mattie
Stafford and a brother-in-law, Noble Stafford.
He is survived by his wife of over 69 years, Mrs. Rosie
Shankle Stephens of North Little Rock, Arkansas; two
sons, Bobby Stephens of North Little Rock and his wife
Mary and Larry Stephens and his wife, Lana of Omaha,
Nebraska; a sister-in-law, Brooksie Stephens, five
grandchildren, Dana (Steve) Parker, Suzie (Glenn)
Thames, Renee (Tim) Wilson, Blaise Stephens, and Wesley
(Lynnette) Stephens; and nine great-grandchildren, Tyler
Ross Parker, Jeremy and Parker Thames, Jacob and
Chandler Wilson, Brittany Stephens and Lyndsey, Benjamin
and Jonathan Stephens.
Burial was in the Seminary Cemetery in McKenzie.

arrangements.
Annette Travis
1939-2003
GREENFIELD: Services for Annette Travis, 63, were at
11:00 a.m., Tuesday, March 18 at Brummitt Funeral Home
with Brother Joseph Williamson and Brother Toney Wiggins
officiating. Burial was in the New Prospect Cemetery in
Greenfield.
Mrs. Travis, a retired insurance coordinator for Smith
and Smith Optometry in McKenzie died Saturday, March 15
at Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville.
She was born June 18, 1939 in Weakley County. She was a
member of the New Prospect Baptist Church. She was
preceded in death by her mother, Martha Armstrong Cox.
Survivors include her husband, Kenneth R. Travis of
Greenfield; her father, J.M. Cox of Greenfield; two
daughters, Kim Gilmore of McKenzie and Karen Hutson of
Franklin, Virginia; three sisters, Janice Dunning of
Greenfield, Carroll Lewis of Martin and Hope Bateman of
Trezevant; two grandchildren, Kendra Gilmore and Carter
Hutson; twelve nieces and nephews.
Pauline Sylvia Wonderly
1900-2003
SPRINGVILLE: Graveside services for Pauline Sylvia Wonderly, 103, will be on Thursday, March 20 at All
Souls Cemetery in Chardon, Ohio. Visitation was Sunday
afternoon, March 16 at McEvoy Funeral Home in Paris.
Mrs. Wonderly, a homemaker, died on Saturday, March 15
at Henry County Medical Center in Paris.
She was born March 3, 1900 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
to the late Emil Albrecht and Antionette Albrecht. She
was a Catholic.
Survivors include a son, Leon E. Wonderly, Jr. (Grace)
of Springville; a daughter-in-law, Mildred Wonderly of
Euclid, Ohio, four grandchildren and one
great-grandchild.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Leo E.
Wonderly, Sr. on September 9, 1966; a daughter, Elaine
Gordos; a son, Norman A. Wonderly; and four brothers,
Leo Albrecht, Harold Albrecht, Walter Albrecht and
Charlie Albrecht.
Vernnie Hatch
1919-2003
YUMA: Mrs. Vernnie Hatch, 83, died on Monday, March 17
at the Baptist Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will
be on Wednesday, March 19 at 1:00 p.m. in the Dilday
Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Andy White, Brother
Rufus Chandler and Brother Robert Simmons officiating.
Interment will be at New Hope Cemetery in Yuma.
Mrs. Hatch was born November 23, 1919 in Carroll County
to the late Roland and Mollie Jowers Umstead. She was a
homemaker and a member of the New Hope Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by six brothers, Freeman
Umstead, Sam Umstead, Dan Umstead, Billy Umstead, Capp
Umstead and Roy Umstead and two sisters, Doy Robinson
and Bonnie Hicks.
She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Roy W.
Hatch; a daughter, Norma Baker of Huntingdon.

Bernice Higdon
1920-2003
BRUCETON: Services for Mrs. Bernice Higdon, 82, were at
2:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 18 at the Bruceton Funeral
Home Chapel. Burial was in the Prospect Cemetery.
Mrs. Higdon, a retired seamstress for Publix Shirt, died
on Sunday, March 16 at Bruceton Life Care Center.
She was born on December 30, 1920 in Red Bay, Alabama to
the late William Edward King and Alma Brewer King. She
was a Baptist.
A son, Robert Edward Higdon, preceded her in death.
Survivors include her husband, Bobby Higdon and one
grandson.
