MCKENZIE: Services for Colin Locke were at 1:00
p.m., Wednesday, November 12 at the McKenzie Cumberland
Presbyterian Church with Rev. Tony Janner officiating.
Burial was in the Caledonia Cemetery.
The infant was stillborn November 10 at McKenzie
Regional Hospital.
Survivors include his mother and father, Jessica Richter
Locke and Dusty Locke of McKenzie; a brother, Mitchell
Locke of McKenzie; paternal grandmother Mickey Locke of
Memphis; maternal grandparents Kay and Kurt Richter of
Russellville, Arkansas; paternal grandparents Bob and
Gail Seratte of McKenzie; great-grandparents J.T. and
Dora Seratte, Dorothy Jones and Dortha Kinslow and
uncles Christopher Seratte, Shawn Stephens and Brandy
Locke; two aunts Tabatha Stephens and Robin Casey.
McKenzie Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Allen E. Williams
1917-2003
HUNTINGDON: Mr. Allen E. Williams, 86, died on
Friday, November 14 at the Tennessee State Veterans Home
in Humboldt. Funeral services were conducted on Sunday,
November 16 at 2:00 p.m. in the Dilday Funeral Home
Chapel with Rev. Fred Ward officiating. Interment
followed in the Hickory Flatt Cemetery near Cedar Grove.
Mr. Williams, the son of the late Clark and Gracie Burke
Williams was born October 18, 1917 in Dyer. At the age
of 10, he moved to Huntingdon with his family. On May
23, 1942 he was drafted into the United States Army. He
served three and one half year in the Asiatic-Pacific
Theater in World War II. In 1946, he was elected Circuit
Court Clerk for Carroll County and served one term. His
second military career began on November 12, 1949 with
the Tennessee Army National Guard when he entered on the
date of Federal Recognition of Anti Tank Company, 117th
Infantry. On December 15, 1948, he accepted the
full-time position of Unit Administrator of the
Huntingdon unit. He served in this capacity until his
retirement in 1977, after 33 years and four months of
service to his country. His awards include:
Asiatic-Pacific Theater medal, with one bronze star,
Good Conduct medal, National Defense service medal;
World War II Victory medal, Armed Forces Reserve medal;
National Guard Distinguished Service Medal, Tennessee
National Guard Commendation Medal and numerous other
state awards. In 1974 he received the first “Chief’s
Fifty” recruiting award which was presented personally
by the Chief, National Guard Bureau, in Washington, D.C.
On August 8, 1993, the Huntingdon National Guard was
dedicated and renamed the Allen E. Williams Armory.
Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Mrs. Lois Cook
Williams; one son, Steve Williams and one brother Johnny
Williams, all of Huntingdon. Two brothers, Billy
Williams and Dallas Williams preceded him in death.
Velma Ellis
1922-2003
MEMPHIS: Mrs. Velma Ellis, 81, formerly of the Vale
Community, died on Wednesday, November 12 at the
Tri-Lakes Medical Center in Batesville, Mississippi.
Funeral services were conducted on Saturday, November 15
in the Dilday Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Steve
Whitworth officiating. Interment followed in the New
Hope Cemetery.
Mrs. Ellis, the daughter of the late John and Arlie
Mitchell Yarbrough, was born January 29, 1922 in Vale.
She was a member of the Union Avenue Methodist Church in
Memphis and worked in the Medical Records Department of
LeBonheur Hospital for 26 years. She was also preceded
in death by one sister, Mrs. Ocie VanCleave and two
brothers, Milton Yarbrough and Tommy Yarbrough.
Survivors include one son, Kenneth Ellis of Batesville,
Mississippi; one sister, Louise Suiter of Miami,
Florida; two grandchildren and one great-grandson.
William Thomas Smith
1920-2003
HUNTINGDON: Mr. William Thomas Smith, 83, died on
Thursday, November 13 at the Huntingdon Health and
Rehabilitation Center. Memorial services will be held at
a later date.
Mr. Smith was born January 16, 1920 in Montgomery County
to the late Leslie Homer and Lucy Power Smith. He was an
army veteran and a farmer. He was preceded in death by a
sister, Ida Jane Palmer.
Survivors include four sisters, Martha Murphy of
Paducah, Kentucky, Helen Johnson of Clarksville, Lucile
Tuell of Jeffersontown, Kentucky and Christine Collins
of Louisville, Kentucky and one brother, John Edwin
Smith of Paducah, Kentucky. Dilday Funeral Home was in
charge of the arrangements.
Joe Seay
1931-2003
CEDAR GROVE: Mr. Joe Seay, 72, died Wednesday,
November 12 at the Jackson-Madison County General
Hospital. Funeral services were conducted on Saturday,
November 15 at 3:00 p.m. in the Dilday Funeral Home
Chapel with Brother Robert Barger and Brother John
Holcomb officiating. Interment followed in the Gibson
Memory Gardens.
Mr. Seay, the son of the late Louis Hambrick and Ora E.
Wright Seay, was born February 3, 1931 in Winston
County, Alabama. He was a Baptist, a World War II army
veteran and the retired owner of Joe’s Barbecue in
Huntingdon. He was also preceded in death by two
brothers, Clint Hambrick and Paul Hambrick.
Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Dale Baxter Seay;
one son, Jerry Seay and one grandson, all of Cedar
Grove.
Rev. Lee Earl Scott
1930-2003
MCKENZIE: Rev. Lee Earl Scott, 73, passed away
Saturday, November 15 at his son’s home in Maryville.
Funeral services were conducted on Tuesday, November 18
at 10:00 a.m. at the Barron Springs Cumberland
Presbyterian Church with Dr. William Rustenhaven and
Rev. Merlyn Alexander officiating. Interment followed in
the church cemetery.
Rev. Scott was born August 5, 1930 in Detroit, Michigan.
He was an active minister for the Cumberland
Presbyterian Churches and was serving as pastor for
Barren Spring Cumberland Presbyterian Church and the
Trezevant Cumberland Presbyterian Church. He had
pastored churches in Alabama, Kentucky, Tennessee and
Texas. He received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1953
from Bethel College in McKenzie, a Bachelor of Divinity
Degree in 1956 from the Cumberland Presbyterian Seminary
in McKenzie and a Master of Arts Degree in 1966 from the
Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, Kentucky.
His mother, Lee Ella Seay Scott, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Betty Carolyn
LaFollette Scott; two daughters, Donna Marie Scott
Kesterson of Maryville and Laura Lynn Scott Chambers of
Henderson, Texas; three sons, David Wayne Scott of
Dyersburg, Jerry Lee Scott of Maryville and James
Houston Scott of Longview, Texas; his father, James
Thomas Scott of Sparta; two sisters, Margie Louise Scott
Gore of Sparta and Frances Ann Scott Anderson of Gross
Point Farms, Michigan; one brother, Rev. Clifton Alvis
Scott of Sparta; twelve grandchildren and five
great-grandchildren.
Jean Dorothy Maxwell
1924-2003
MCKENZIE: Services for Jean Dorothy Maxwell, 79,
were at 2:00 p.m., Friday, November 14 at Brummitt
Funeral Home with Rev. Vance Rushing officiating.
Interment followed at Shiloh Cemetery in McKenzie.
Ms. Maxwell, a retired secretary for Publix Shirt
factory in Huntingdon died on Tuesday, November 11 at
University Medical Center in Lebanon.
She was born August 10, 1924 in Carthage to the late
Alma Endress Gibbs and John McMillan Gibbs. She was also
preceded in death by her husband, James Robert Maxwell,
Jr.
Survivors include two sons, Jimmy Maxwell and Ronnie
Maxwell, both of McKenzie; one daughter, Laurel “Cookie”
Cary of Westport; three brothers, Harold Endress of
Detroit, Michigan, Charles Gibbs of Mesa, Arizona and
Robert Gibbs of McKenzie; one sister, Nancy Pakan of
Phoenix, Arizona, 10 grandchildren and 13
great-grandchildren.
Frances Lorene Haywood Baxter
1919-2003
MCKENZIE: Services for Frances Lorene Haywood
Baxter, 84, were at 11:00 a.m., Friday, November 14 at
Brummitt Funeral Home with Rev. Doug Powell and Rev.
Lloyd Johnson officiating. Interment followed at
Caledonia Cemetery in McKenzie.
Mrs. Baxter, a homemaker, died at NHC Nursing Home in
Milan on Tuesday, November 11.
She was born June 18, 1919 in Denmark to the late Ervie
Lavina Gibson Smith and Felix Smith. She was also
preceded in death by her husband, J.C. Baxter.
Survivors include three sons, Donald Sherron Haywood of
Bloomington, Illinois, James Lewis Haywood, Jr. of Milan
and Stanley Dwayne Haywood of Camden; one daughter,
Harriet Ann Haywood Burns of Trezevant; four sisters,
Lavada Prather of McKenzie, Ellie Crossnoe of Gleason,
and Addie Gallimore and Martha Jo Merrill of Dresden;
seven grandchildren and also several step grandchildren.
Geneva McDonald
1921-2003
MCKENZIE: Services for Geneva McDonald, 82, were at
2:00 p.m., Saturday, November 15 at Brummitt Funeral
Home with Bro. Dennis Trull officiating. Interment
followed at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in McKenzie.
Mrs. McDonald, a homemaker, died on Thursday, November
13 at McKenzie Regional Hospital. She was a member of
the First Baptist Church.
Mrs. McDonald was born on June 26, 1921 to the late
Grady and Mary Morgan Coleman. She was also preceded in
death by two brothers, William Coleman and Johnny
Coleman.
Survivors include her husband J.T. “Beanie” McDonald;
two sons, Tommy McDonald of Jackson and Stanley McDonald
of Memphis; one daughter, Melissa Rosengren of Memphis;
one brother, Jimmy Coleman of McKenzie; three sisters,
Lottye Choate of McKenzie, Rebecca Rauchie of Union City
and Floy Teague of Rosemart and six grandchildren.
John E. Hughey
1934-2003
UNION CITY: John E. Hughey, 69, died Monday,
November 10 at Volunteer Hospital in Martin. Services
were at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, November 12 at Bowlin
Funeral Home in Dresden with James Kinsey officiating.
Burial was in the Corinth Cemetery in Sharon.
Mr. Hughey, a retired farmer and truck driver, was a
Baptist and a Master Mason.
He was born in Waverly to the late Robert and Lathel
Fields Hughey. A son, Teddy Hughey and a daughter, Karen
Hughey also preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife, Joy Boone Hughey; two
daughters, Phyllis Rauchle of Union City and Sherry
Merritt of Columbia; one son, Tony Hughey of Gleason;
two sisters, Frances Wilson of Springville and Louise
Morgan of Pillowville; two brothers, Ralph Hughey of
Paris and Robert Hughey of Sharon; seven grandchildren
and eight great-grandchildren.
Cherish Sheilene Webb
1968-2003
GLEASON: Services for Cherish Sheilene Webb, 35,
formerly of Gleason, died on Wednesday, November 12 at
Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville. Services were
scheduled for 1:00 p.m., Monday, November 17 at
Gallimore Funeral Home Chapel. Interment was in the
Hopewell Cemetery.
Ms. Webb, a paralegal, was born October 22, 1968 in
Chicago, Illinois to Joe Allin Webb of Gleason and
Deryse Purtell Webb of Nashville.
Survivors, in addition to her parents, are one son,
Lennon Yowell of Nashville; one brother, Mike Summers of
Hohenwald; and one sister, Tamara Webb of Tucson,
Arizona.
