Mary Margaret Smith Dill
1917-2003
MCKENZIE: Services for Mary Margaret Smith Dill will
be conducted on Wednesday, October 8 at 2:00 p.m. at
Brummitt Funeral Home with Rev. Bud Merwin officiating.
Burial will follow in Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
Mrs. Dill, a housewife, died Monday, October 7 at her
home. She was a lifelong member of the USA Presbyterian
Church. She also belonged to the Golden Ages.
She is survived by a sister, Nova Lynn Smertz of
Memphis; four sons, William K. Dill and Ben F. Dill of
McKenzie, Sam L. Dill of Indianapolis, Indiana and Dan
J. Dill of Memphis; a daughter, Barbara Shiney of
McKenzie; ten grandchildren and sixteen
great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband William Clyde
Dill; two brothers, Jack Smith and Ardeth Smith and a
sister, Ellen Dunn.
She was born June 28, 1917 to the late Robert "Ollie"
Smith and Carrie Brawner Smith.
Visitation with the family will be from 5:00-8:00 p.m.
October 7 at Brummitt Funeral Home.
Lillian Elizabeth Smith
1910-2003
ATWOOD: Services for Lillian Elizabeth Smith, 92,
were at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, October 4, at Brummitt
Funeral Home with Bro. Tony Latham officiating. Burial
followed in the Howse Cemetery in Atwood.
Mrs. Smith, a homemaker, died at NHC Heathcare Center in
Milan on Tuesday, September 30. She was a member of the
Howse Baptist Church in Atwood.
She was born October 2 1910 in Atwood to the late Rosa
Idella Moore Seymore and Andrew Seymore. She was also
preceded in death by her husband, John W. Smith and a
son, James W. Smith.
Survivors include a daughter, Mary E. Crider of
Bradford; five grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren
and one great-great-grandchild.
Lillian B. Welch Reed
1929-2003
CEDAR GROVE: Services for Lillian B. Welch Reed, 74,
were at 2:00 p.m., Friday, October 3 at Reed's Chapel.
Burial followed in Antioch Cemetery.
Mrs. Reed, a retired employee of Porter-Cable, died on
Tuesday, September 30 at Jackson-Madison County General
Hospital.
Survivors include her children, Brenda Walls and Michael
Reed, both of Cedar Grove; a sister, Imogene Robinson of
Childersburg, Alabama, four grandchildren and four
great-grandchildren.
Viola Lenard King Arnold
1912-2003
ATWOOD: Funeral service for Mrs. Viola Lenard King
Arnold, 91, were held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, October 4
at Lawrence-Sorensen Funeral Home in Jackson with Rev.
Robb Parker officiating. Burial followed in the
Henderson City Cemetery.
Mrs. Arnold died on October 2 at Milan General Hospital.
She was making her home with her granddaughter, Frances
Coe in Atwood. She was born in Tippah County,
Mississippi, February 4, 1912 to the late Marion Lenard
and Callie Flake of Mississippi. She was a resident of
Jackson for 51 years. She was married in March 1936 to
Joseph King, and in 1971, married Cecil Dudley Arnold,
both of whom preceded her in death. A son, James King;
one sister, Birdie Burton and four brothers, Johnny
McCoy, William Lenard, Rufus Lenard and Curtis Lenard
also preceded her in death.
Survivors include three children, Virginia Payne of
Huntingdon, David King of Branson, Missouri and Frances
Clements of Henderson; one brother, J.Z. Lenard of
Jackson; twelve grandchildren and 21
great-grandchildren.
Barry Craig Bailey
1956-2003
BUCHANAN: Services for Barry Craig Bailey, 47, were
held on Sunday, October 5 at Crowell Brothers Funeral
Home Chapel in Atlanta. Interment followed at the
Atlanta Memorial Gardens in Doraville, Georgia.
Mr. Bailey, an employee with Plumley-Dana Division, died
on October 1 at McKenzie Regional Hospital. Local
arrangements were handled by McKenzie Funeral Home.
He was born on March 4, 1956 to Vera Mae Bailey of
Doraville, Georgia and Marvin Bailey, who preceded him
in death. Mr. Bailey served with the United State Navy
and was a member of the Am-Vets Post 45 of Paris. While
serving his country, he was discharged as a MM2 with the
submarine squadron in Charleston, South Carolina.
Survivors include his wife, Angela Klatt Bailey, one
brother, Darrell Bailey and wife Beverly of Doraville;
and a special aunt, Irene Langley of Bynum, Alabama.
William Ewing Clifton
1928-2003
HENRY: Services for William Ewing Clifton, 75, were
on Sunday, September 28 at Brummitt Funeral Home in
McKenzie. Burial was in the Henry Cemetery in Henry.
Mr. Clifton, a retired truck driver, died on Thursday,
September 25 at his home.
He was born March 29, 1928 in Bruceton to the late Mary
Ann Townsend Clifton and Robert Lee Clifton. He was also
preceded in death by his wife, Laura Mae Clifton; a
daughter, Sharon F. Weir; two sisters, Gertrude Gunn and
Louise French and five brothers, Hubert Clifton, W.G.
Clifton, J.T. Clifton, Gene Clifton and Odell Clifton.
Survivors include one daughter, Melissa Clark of Grand
Junction, Michigan; two stepdaughters, Diane Spicher of
Fayetteville and Sue Martelli of San Diego, California;
one son, William L. Clifton of Campbell, Missouri; one
sister, Frances Garrigus of Paris; one brother, Wayne
Clifton of Prattville, Alabama; 11 grandchildren and
eight great-grandchildren.
William Buman Argo, Jr.
1917-2003
TREZEVANT: Services for William Buman Argo, Jr., 86,
were at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, October 4 at the
Cumberland Presbyterian Church with Bro. Aaron Holmes
officiating. Burial was in the Trezevant Cemetery.
Mr. Argo, retired from the Milan Arsenal, died on
Wednesday, October 1 at Methodist Hospital Central in
Memphis.
He was born May 21, 1917 in Jackson to the late Vennie
Kemp Argo and William B. Argo, Sr. He was a member of
the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Trezevant.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Virginia
Bryant Argo; a brother, Harold Argo and a sister, Thelma
Williams.
Survivors include two sons, William B. Argo, III of
Germantown and David Argo of Jackson and three
grandchildren, Bradley Argo, Kevin Argo and Timothy
Argo.
Brummitt Funeral Home in Trezevant was in charge of the
arrangements.
Philip Dale Jones
1949-2003
MCKENZIE: Mr. Phillip Dale Jones, 54, formerly of
Nashville and Atlanta, died Thursday, October 2 at his
residence in McKenzie. Funeral services were held
Sunday, October 5 at 2:00 p.m. in the Cedar Avenue
Chapel of McKenzie Funeral Home. Burial was in the
Everett's Chapel Cemetery near McKenzie.
Mr. Jones was a 1967 graduate of McKenzie High School, a
U.S. Army veteran serving in Germany during the Vietnam
Conflict and retired in 1998 from AT&T in Nashville and
Douglasville, Georgia.
He was born September 30, 1949, the son of Elizabeth
Campbell Jones of McKenzie and the late Harry Lee Jones.
He was the grandson of the late Strawl and Clee Campbell
and the late John and Lockie Jones.
Survivors include his wife, Cheryl Rader Jones; three
sons, Michael Jones of Winston, Georgia, Christopher
Jones of Milan and Allen Jones of Villa Rica, Georgia;
seven grandchildren; four sisters, Diana Haney of Panama
City, Florida, Brenda Woodard of Camden, Beth Callis of
White Bluff and Sherry Jones of McKenzie.
Vernon Lee Mills
1914-2003
CEDAR GROVE: Funeral services for Vernon Lee Mills,
89, were at 4:00 p.m., Sunday, October 5 at Reed's
Chapel with burial in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery.
Mr. Mills, retired from Milan Arsenal and a farmer, died
Saturday, October 4 at Jackson, Madison County General
Hospital.
Survivors include four daughters, Barbara Wood, Nancy
Coffman and Ginger Baxter, all of Cedar Grove and Annie
Ruth Floenghel of Indianapolis, Indiana; one sister,
Earline Jones of Cedar Grove; one brother, Russell Mills
of Cedar Grove; five grandchildren and five
great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ollie Mills and
one daughter, Betty June Mills.
Ronnie Ray Scates
1950-2003
CHURCH HILL: Ronnie Ray Scates, 53, passed away on
Friday, September 26 at his residence. Funeral services
were held on Monday, September 29 at Colonial Funeral
Home in Webber City, Virginia. Mr. Scates was born in
McKenzie and had resided in Church Hill.
He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in Germany. He
was a millwright by profession and was last employed at
AFB. He attended Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church. She was
preceded in death by his wife, Becky Scates.
Survivors include a daughter, Julie Scates and a
grandson, Alex of Memphis; three other children, Hope,
Jacob and Joe Blankenbecker and six grandchildren of
Church Hill, his mother, Ann Ferrell of McKenzie; a
brother, Jack Scates of McKenzie and a sister, Cathy
Kassinger of Memphis.
Edd Dudley, Jr.
1952-2003
LINDEN, VIRGINIA: Services for Edd Dudley, Jr., 51,
were at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, September 27 at Trinity
Funeral Home in Paris.
Mr. Dudley died Saturday, September 20 in an automobile
accident in Washington, DC.
He was born January 10, 1952 in McKenzie to Cleo Haynes
Dudley and the late Edd Dudley, Sr. He graduated from
McKenzie High School in 1969 and joined the United
States Marine Corps in 1970. There he became a mortar
man. He received an honorable discharge in 1972. Edd was
awarded the National Defense Medal and the Good Conduct
Medal.
In 1973 he moved to Washington DC where he met and
married his wife, Wilhelmina Diane Loving Dudley in
1974.
Other survivors include three children, Tiffoni and
Emerson Dudley and Janin Barbour; his siblings, Joyce
Cooper (Lloyd), Jane Hampton, Dennis Dudley (Anita),
Dorethea Royal (Tony), Reo Pruiett, George Dudley,
Jewell Dudley, Kathy Belton (Jon) and Eric Dudley,
several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Viewings were held on Thursday, September 25 from 5:00
to 8:00 p.m. at Alexander S. Pope Funeral Home in
Forestville, Maryland.
Joyce Matlock
1945-2003
PARIS: Services for Joyce Collier Matlock were held
on Monday, October 6 at the Community of Christ Church
on Lone Oak Road with her nephew, Rev. Mark Elkins of
Jenson Baptist Church at Pineville, Kentucky and her
brother, Dr. Gary S. Collier of Paris officiating.
Burial was in the Walker Cemetery.
Mrs. Matlock, 58, died on Friday afternoon, October 3 at
St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville after a battle with
cancer. She was married on January 12, 1964 to Don
Matlock, who survives.
She was born February 13, 1945 in Henry County, a
daughter of Samuel O. and Madeline Lemonds Collier of
Paris. Survivors also include two sons, David (Kris)
Matlock and Jeffrey Matlock, both of Paris; four
sisters, Janice (Ronnie) Wimberley and Chris (Joe)
Andrews, both of Paris, Carol Collier and special friend
Gene Owen of McKenzie and Giggie Collier of Carrolton,
Georgia; her mother-in-law Lavinia (Duward) Snyder of
Paris; a sister-in-law, Kathy Collier of Paris; a
brother-in-law, Dennis (Montcell) Matlock of McKenzie;
one cousin Glynn (Jane) Collier of Nashville; three
grandchildren, David "Mat" Matlock Jr. and Lee and Nate
Matlock and several nieces and nephews.
Chosen as pallbearers were Joe and Sam Andrews, Sean and
Scott Matlock, Jim Collier, Gene Owen, Lynn Hayes and
Issac Conger. Named as honorary pallbearers were
employees of Commercial Bank, members of the Paris
Chapter of Business Professional Women, where she had
been its current president and members of the 1963 Grove
High School Class where Mrs. Matlock graduated.
Arrangements were handled by McEvoy Funeral Home and
Brummitt Funeral Home.
