Herman L. Hopper
1916-2003
MCKENZIE: Mr. Herman L. Hopper, 87, died Saturday
evening, October 18 at McKenzie Healthcare Center
following a short illness. He will be buried in Mt.
Olivet Cemetery in McKenzie.
He was born June 7, 1916 in Tyler, Missouri. He served
the United States Coast Guard from 1941-1945. He retired
from the City of Detroit after 30 years of service with
the DSR Transit Service. He was a Mason and a member of
Christ Lutheran Church in Paris.
He and his family moved from St. Clair Shores, Michigan
to McKenzie in 1971. He ran the gas station on the
corner of Highland and Cedar for a few years where Shell
Pockets is now located. It began as Hopper’s Gulf and
later became Hopper’s Texaco.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ellen Roberts
Hopper, three brothers, Raymond Hopper, Jewel Hopper and
Gray Hopper and one sister, Dixie Hopper.
Survivors include two sons, James C. Hopper of McKenzie
and John L. Hopper of New Baltimore, Michigan; one
daughter, Jackie M. Hasselbrink of McKenzie; four
grandchildren, Rhiannon Hasselbrink of Martin, Jesse
Hasselbrink of Murray, Kentucky and John and Brandon
Hopper of Michigan and a great-granddaughter, Sierra
Tabada Hasselbrink of Huntingdon.Jessie B. Bailey
1938-2003
GLEASON: Services for Jessie B. Bailey, 65, were on
Tuesday, October 21 at 10:30 a.m. in the Brummitt
Funeral Home in McKenzie with Bro. Bob Copeland
officiating. Interment followed in the Carroll Memorial
Gardens.
Mr. Bailey, retired from Gleason Brick Company, died on
Saturday, October 18 at Jackson-Madison County General
Hospital.
He was born August 17, 1938 in Gleason to the late
Thelma Pritchard Bailey and Bennie Bailey.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Reed Bailey; three
sons, Charles McAbee, Ricky McAbee and Allan McAbee, all
of Gleason; three daughters, Rhonda Tabers of Muskogee,
Oklahoma and Chriss Shrum and Wanda Hudson, both of Fort
Gibson, Oklahoma; two brothers, Rupert Bailey of Dresden
and James G. Bailey of Trezevant; three sisters, Shirley
Clanfarani of Gleason, Marie Penick of Henry and Mildred
Bailey of Florida; and 14 grandchildren.
David R. Stout
1957-2003
MARTIN: Services for David R. Stout, 46, were held
at Murphy Funeral Home on Thursday, October 15 with Rev.
Mace Jett officiating. Interment followed at the East
Side Cemetery.
Mr. Stout, retired from the United States Navy after 21
years of service, a student at UTM and a medical field
employee, died on Monday, October 13 at the Volunteer
Community Hospital.
He was born in Trezevant on February 19, 1957 to Bill J.
Stout and Peggy Cunningham Stout of Martin.
Survivors include his wife, Felicia Rudzek Stout; two
daughters, Tera Garner and Nicole Stout, both of Martin,
his parents, a brother, Billy G. Stout of Martin, his
maternal grandmother, Adell Cunningham of McKenzie and
one grandson.
Maurice Ethridge “Radio” Flowers
1918-2003
HOLLOW ROCK: Mr. Maurice Ethridge “Radio” Flowers,
85, died on Sunday, October 12, at the Life Care Center
in Bruceton. Funeral services were conducted on Tuesday,
October 14 at Faith Baptist Church with Bro. Steve Davis
and Bro. Scotty Davis officiating. Interment followed in
the New Prospect Cemetery.
Mr. Flowers was born June 9, 1918 in Dollar to the late
Ed and Sally Hollowell Flowers. He was a retired
locomotive engineer for the CSX Railroad Company and a
member of the Faith Baptist Church. His wife, Jewell
Bennett Flowers preceded him in death on July 28, 1994.
Survivors included several nieces, nephews and great
nieces and nephews.
Chase Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Willie Wray Smith
1924-2003
MCKENZIE: Services for Willie Wray Smith, 79, were
on Sunday, October 19 at Brummitt Funeral Home in
McKenzie with Rev. Harrell Nation officiating. Interment
followed at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in McKenzie.
Mr. Smith, retired from Bethel College, died on
Wednesday, October 15 in McKenzie. He was a World War II
veteran, having served with the United States Army Air
Corps. He was also a member of the First United
Methodist Church.
He was born on March 3, 1924 to the late Ruby Lorene
Smith and Grover Swain Smith in Carroll County. He was
also preceded in death by his wife, Sylvia Brawner
Smith.
Survivors include his sister-in-law, Opal Sasser of
McKenzie.
Esther L. Putman
1917-2003
MCKENZIE: Services for Esther L. Putman, 86, were on
Saturday, October 18 at 10:00 a.m. at the First Baptist
Church in McKenzie with Bro. Dennis Trull and Rev.
Harrell Nation officiating. Interment followed in Mt.
Olivet Cemetery in McKenzie.
Mrs. Putman, a homemaker, died on Thursday, October 16
at McKenzie Health Care Center in McKenzie.
She was born September 3, 1917 in Myrtle, Mississippi,
to the late Johnnie Bessie Haynes Lawrence and John
Wesley Lawrence. Also preceding her in death were her
husband, John Robert Putman; one daughter, Shirley Ann
Putman; one son, John Putman, Jr.; three brothers, Paul
Lawrence, Richard Lawrence and Joe Lawrence and two
sisters, Thelma Kitchens and Grace Lawrence.
Survivors include one daughter, Betty P. Highfil of
McKenzie; four sons, Les Putman, Robert L. Putman, Jimmy
Putman and William T. Putman, all of McKenzie; 13
grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. She was a
member of the First Baptist Church in McKenzie.
Donald E. Cooter
1940-2003
PARIS: Donald Edward Cooter, 63, died Monday,
October 13 at Camden General Hospital. Funeral services
were held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, October 15 at McEvoy
Funeral Home in Paris with Jeff Hemingway of Christ
Lutheran Church officiating. Burial followed in the
Middle Tennessee Veterans Cemetery in Nashville.
Mr. Cooter was born September 13, 1940 in Kingsport to
the late William A. and Sue Keller Cooter. He was an
employee with the McKenzie Post Office for 12 years and
served 20 years with the United States Army, retiring as
sergeant first class. He served six years in Vietnam,
receiving the Purple Heart, Bronze Star and Combat
Infantry Badge.
Survivors include his wife, Carol Schultz Cooter; a
daughter, Shellie Sue Benoit of Lake Charles, Louisiana;
a son, Donald Edward Cooter, Jr, of Paris; three
sisters, Midge Lemoine of Baton Rouge, Louisiana,
Barbara Vest of Ragley, Louisiana and Joan Ponvelle of
Labadieville, Louisiana; one brother, Billy Cooter of
Labadieville, Louisiana and one grandchild.
Memorials may be made to the Christ Lutheran Church
building fund or the American Heart Association.
Shelia Kay Jackson
1965-2003
HOLLOW ROCK: Services for Shelia Kay Jackson, 38,
were at 3:00 p.m., Friday, October 17 at Bruceton First
Baptist Church with Rev. Tim Maness and Rev. Terry
Bradshaw officiating. Interment followed in McAuley
Cemetery in Buena Vista.
Mrs. Jackson, a housewife, died on Wednesday, October 15
at Baptist Hospital in Huntingdon.
She was born July 28, 1965 in Camden to Edward and Ann
Butler of Bruceton, both of whom survive. She was a
member of the Bruceton First Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Charles Brent Jackson,
II; two daughters, Tobie Castleman and Haley Ann
Jackson, both of Bruceton; one son, Brandon Pruitt of
Indiana; one sister, Melissa Arnold of Bruceton and one
grandchild.
James C. Childress
1921-2003
GAINESVILLE, GEORGIA: James C. Childress, 81,
formerly of McKenzie, died on Sunday, October 19 in
Gainesville. A lifelong Baptist, he was a member of the
McKenzie First Baptist Church, where he taught Sunday
School. He was a member of the F&AM #96 in McKenzie for
over 50 years and was a past master. Mr. Childress was
born in Weakley County on November 25, 1921. His
parents, Ira and Jessie Adams Childress, a brother,
Marvin and a sister, Annie Lee preceded him in death.
Mr. Childress was a World War II veteran and had a
30-year career with Proctor and Gamble in Traffic
Management in Cincinnati, Los Angeles and New York City.
He was a graduate of Bethel College in McKenzie.
Surviving are his wife, Daphne Childress, to whom he was
married 61 years; a son, James S. Childress, Major
General USAF, retired and wife Cassandra of Suwannee,
Georgia; grandsons, Scott and wife Kat, Kelly and wife
Wendy, all of Powder Springs, Georgia; grandson Mike of
Fort Myers, Florida; great-granddaughter Elizabeth of
Powder Springs, Georgia; brothers Dan of Collierville,
Bruce of Memphis; sisters Patsy Miller and Sue Vinton of
Bartlett and numerous nieces and nephews including Alice
Summers and Ricky Scott, both of McKenzie.
Visitation and services will be at the McKenzie Funeral
Home in McKenzie. Visitation will be from 7:00-9:00
p.m., Thursday, October 23. Services will be held on
Friday, October 24 at 11:00 a.m., Friday, October 24.
Interment will follow immediately.

Kim Crocker Waller
1960-2003
MCLEMORESVILLE: Services for Kim Crocker Waller, 43,
were on Monday, October 20 at 2:00 p.m. at Bodkin
Funeral Home in Milan with interment following at the
Hopewell Cemetery.
Mrs. Waller, an employee for Baptist Memorial Hospital
in Huntingdon, died on Saturday, October 17 at
Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville. Her
father, George Crocker, preceded her in death.
Survivors include her mother, Betty Jane Knott Crocker;
her husband, Jeff Waller; two daughters, Jennifer Waller
and Candice Waller one son, Josh Waller; and two
brothers, Mark Crocker and Mike Crocker, all of
McLemoresville.
The family requests memorials be directed to the
American Cancer Society.
Margaret King
1941-2003
BRUCETON: Mrs. Margaret King, 62, died on Sunday,
October 19 at the Henry County Medical Center in Paris.
Funeral services were conducted on Tuesday, October 21,
at 2:00 p.m. in the Dilday Funeral Home Chapel with Bro.
Billy Joe Hilliard officiating. Interment followed in
the Long Rock Cemetery.
Mrs. King was born January 14, 1941 in Gibson County to
the late John Lewis and Scobey Doyle Arnold. She was an
employee of Henry I. Siegel, a member of the Center
Point Missionary Baptist Church, a Sunday school teacher
and a member of the Cherokee Wolf Clan. She was always
happy to volunteer her services to the community. She
loved camping, fishing, flowers and gardening.
Survivors include her husband, Jerry D. King; one son,
Joel King of Hollow Rock; two daughters, Debbie Kinnick
of Hollow Rock and Melissa Lambuth of Bruceton; two
brothers, Morgan Arnold of Hollow Rock and Frank Arnold
of McLemoresville; one sister, Helen Agee of
McLemoresville and six grandchildren.
Delama Nell Hargrove Heiser
1932-2003
FRANKLIN, WISCONSIN: Mrs. Delama Nell Hargrove
Heiser, 71, died on Thursday, October 16 at her home.
Funeral services were conducted on Sunday, October 19 in
the Dilday Funeral Home Chapel at 1:00 p.m. with Brother
Scott Carter officiating. Interment followed in the
Prospect Cemetery.
Mrs. Heiser was born May 30, 1932 in Carroll County to
the late Thomas Older and Eva McDowell Hargrove. She was
the co-owner of Heiser Trailer Sales. A son, Dennis
Smith preceded her in death.
Survivors include her husband, Eldon Heiser; two
daughters, Tamara Heiser of Fronberg, Montana and Dianna
Heiser of Franklin, Wisconsin; one son, Eldon D. Heiser
of Franklin, Wisconsin and six grandchildren.
George L. Greenway
1925-2003
HUNTINGDON: Mr. George L. Greenway, 78, died on
Thursday, October 16 at the Decatur County Hospital in
Parsons. Funeral services were conducted on Sunday,
October 19 at 3:30 p.m. in the Dilday Funeral Home
Chapel with Elder Lynn Stapleton officiating. Interment
followed in the New Crossroads Cemetery.
Mr. Greenway was born April 5, 1925 in Parsons to the
late Moses Newberry and Pearl Gulledge Greenway. He was
an army World War II veteran and a retired employee of
Magnatek. He was preceded in death by a son, Danny Bruce
Greenway; a daughter, Lisa Ann Greenway; a brother, Jim
Greenway and a sister, Claudine Greenway.
Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Wilma Greenway;
a son, Larry Greenway; a daughter, Tresa Smothers, all
of Huntingdon; three brothers, Rex Greenway of
Lexington, Tommy Greenway of Chicago, Illinois and
Gordon Greenway of Indiana; one sister, Betty Dodd of
Dayton, Ohio; one granddaughter, Emily Smothers and a
special cousin, Wilma Evans of Milan.
Emma L. Grier
1904-2003
HUNTINGDON: Emma L. Grier, 99, died on Friday,
October 17 at the Huntingdon Health and Rehabilitation
Center. Services were Monday, October 20 at the New
Reedy Creek Missionary Baptist Church on Terry Road in
McLemoresville with Dr. Kenneth Hillsman delivering the
eulogy. Interment followed at the New Reedy Creek
Cemetery.
Survivors include one sister, Wynona Ellis of St. Louis,
Missouri. She was preceded in death by her parents,
brothers and additional sisters.

William Henry Compton
1910-2003
MILAN: Graveside services for William Henry Compton,
93, were at 3:30 p.m., Sunday, October 19 at Carroll
County Memorial Gardens. Bodkin Funeral Home was in
charge of the arrangements.
Mr. Compton, formerly a resident of Huntingdon and a
retired employee of Ford Motor Company, died on
Saturday, October 18 at Milan General Hospital.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Compton; one son,
Gerald Rush of Milan; one sister, Nellie Foster of
Huntingdon; two grandchildren and two
great-grandchildren.
The family requests memorials be directed to the
American Cancer Society.
Kenneth Harold Allison
1948-2003
MEMPHIS: Kenneth Harold Allison, 55, senior control
clerk at University of Tennessee Health and Science
Center, died Monday, September 22 at his home.
Kenneth leaves a daughter, Lorey Basford of McKenzie; a
sister, Martha Crider of Huntingdon; a brother, Charles
Allison of Milan, his wife, Mary Claudette and two
grandchildren, Alli and Drew Basford.
Graveside services were held September 24 at Memphis
Memory Gardens.
Joyce Radford Bryant
1955-2003
MCKENZIE: Visitation for Joyce Radford Bryant, 48,
was held on Tuesday, October 21 at Brummitt Funeral Home
on Tuesday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Mrs.
Bryant, a homemaker, died on Saturday, October 18 at
Jackson-Madison County General Hospital.
She was born on February 21, 1955 in Coral Gables,
Florida, the daughter of Dorothy Wolcott Radford and
Harold Radford, both of Gainesville, Florida.
Other survivors include her husband, Dr. Michael Bryant;
two sons, Jeffery Bryant and Nicholas Bryant and two
daughters, Elizabeth Bryant and Heather Bryant, all of
McKenzie; and one sister, Jeanne Rendere of Gainesville,
Florida.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that
donations be made to the American Cancer Society.
Brummitt Funeral Home was in charge of the local
