William Theron Akins
1915-2003
NASHVILLE: William Theron Akins, 88, died on
September 10 at his home after a brief illness. He is
survived by his wife of 59 years, Josephine Humphrey
Akins, formerly of Springville; sister-in-law Marie Fann
of Springville; two cousins, Maureen McClure Hopper of
Atwood and Frances McClure Foster of McKenzie. Mr. Akins
was born July 31, 1915 in Weakley County to the late
Robert H. and Bess McClure Akins. He was preceded in
death by a brother, Howard Akins of New York City, who
died in 1946. He graduated from Trezevant High School,
attended Bethel College in McKenzie and taught for two
years in the elementary grades of Carroll and Weakley
counties before entering the University of Tennessee at
Knoxville. There he received a BS degree in U.S.
History, government and politics. He then accepted a
position as a history teacher at Springfield High
School, a position he held for four years. He also
served as the baseball coach and as the assistant
football and basketball coach to the well-known and
highly respected coach, W. Boyce Smith. He did work on
his Masters Degree at Louisiana State University in
Baton Rouge until interrupted by World War II. During
the war he served first as a civilian instructor in the
U.S. Air Force and after entering the military, he
continued as an Air Force Instructor completing his
service with the Southeastern Training Command assigned
to the B-29 program.
For the past 36 years he was an active member of the
Trinity Presbyterian Church in Nashville where he served
twice as an elder and as a teacher of the adult Bible
Class. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 96,
McKenzie from 1936 until his death. He was a member of
the Springfield Lions Club, the Huntsville Exchange Club
and was an active alumnus of the University of
Tennessee.
A memorial services was held at the Trinity Presbyterian
Church at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 13.

Presbyterian Church, 3601 Hillsboro Road, Nashville or
to Alive Hospice, 1718 Patterson Street, Nashville,
37203.

Sandra Kay Blankenship
1953-2003
CEDAR GROVE: Mrs. Sandra Kay Blankenship, 50, died
on Wednesday, September 10 at the Jackson-Madison County
General Hospital. Funeral services were conducted on
Saturday, September 13 at 1:00 p.m. in the Dilday
Funeral Home Chapel.
Mrs. Blankenship was born February 2, 1953 in Milan to
the late James Miller and Betty Hendricks Bowles. She
was an employee of Dienamic Tool and Die and a member of
the Oak Grove Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Tim Blankenship; one
daughter, Kay Vales of Jackson; one son, Daniel Farley
of Humboldt; her stepfather, Albert Bowles of Milan; one
sister, Jodie Weaver of Crosby, Texas; three brothers,
Steve Miller of Milan, Bruce Miller of Cedar Grove and
Michael Miller of Nashville; and three
grandchildren.
Myrtle Jane Bouldin
1913-2003
MCKENZIE: Services for Myrtle Jane Bouldin, 89, were
at 2:00 p.m., Friday, September 12 at Brummitt Funeral
Home with Bro. Clayton Owen officiating. Burial was in
Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
Mrs. Bouldin, a retired cook for Bethel College, died on
Wednesday, September 10 at McKenzie Health Care Center.
She was a member of the Liberty Hill Baptist Church.
She was born December 12, 1913 in McKenzie to the late
Mattie Lavada Woodard Smith and William Archie Smith.
Survivors include her daughter, Nancy Micaleff of
Livonia, Michigan; four grandchildren, Penny McKinnie,
Peggy Cole, David Reid and Sandi Thomas and eight
great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Harold
Bouldin; one son, Joe Bouldin; two brothers, Hulon Smith
and Claude Smith and one sister, Brooxie Chandler.
Billy Joe Hindman
1961-2003
HUNTINGDON: Mr. Billy Joe Hindman, 41, died on
Saturday, September 13 at the St. Thomas Hospital in
Nashville. Funeral services were conducted on Tuesday,
September 16 at 1:00 p.m. in the Chase Funeral Home
Chapel with Bro. Johnny Boyd officiating. Interment
followed in the Jones Cemetery.
Mr. Hindman was born on November 5, 1961 in Jackson. He
was an avid coon hunter and a member of the local coon
hunters club. He was preceded in death by his father,
Billy Charles Hindman; one sister, Teresa Ellis and two
brothers, Tony Hindman and Terry Hindman.
Survivors include his wife, Tammy Lowe Hindman; his
mother, Martha Jo Garvey Hindman of Bruceton; three
daughters, Demetria Hindman and Heather Hindman, both of
Camden and Tiffany Hindman of Bruceton; one son, Dylan
Hindman of Huntingdon; two sisters, Virginia Toombs of
Bruceton and Debbie Peterson of Wildersville; and three
grandchildren.
Lorell Kay Lawrence
1920-2003
HUNTINGDON: Mrs. Lorell Kay Lawrence, 82, died on
Sunday, September 7 at the McKenzie Regional Hospital.
Funeral services were conducted on Wednesday, September
10 at 2:00 p.m. at the Huntingdon Missionary Baptist
Church with Elder Lynn Stapleton officiating. Interment
followed in the Carroll Memorial Gardens.
Mrs. Lawrence was born on September 10, 1920 in Crockett
County to the late E.C. and Mamie Bolen Kail. She was a
retired employee of the Publix Shirt Corporation and a
member of the Huntingdon Missionary Baptist Church. She
was preceded in death by her husband, Elbert Lawrence
and a son, Mark Twain Lawrence.
Survivors include six daughters, Peggy Fingerut of
Portland, Oregon, Mary Butler of Washington, Betty
Howard of Redmond, Oregon, Kay Crum of Cedar Grove,
Sherry Milam of Sharon and Theresa Reeves of McKenzie;
one sister, Yvonne Pigue of Alamo; one brother, Donald
Kail of Alamo; 19 grandchildren and 19
great-grandchildren.
Dilday Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
James Vernon McPherson
1923-2003
HUNTINGDON: Mr. James Vernon McPherson, 79, died
Thursday, September 11 at the Life Care Center in
Bruceton. Graveside services were conducted at 11:00
a.m., Monday, September 15 at Palmer Shelter Cemetery.
Mr. McPherson was born October 19, 1923 in Memphis to
the late James Vernon and Ethyl Elizabeth Brooks
McPherson. He was a design engineer and an United States
Army Air Force World War II veteran. A brother, Raymond
McPherson and a sister, Geraldine Poindexter, preceded
him in death.
Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Diane McPherson;
five daughters, Heather McGruder of San Pedro,
California, Kathryn Leah McPherson of Redondo Beach,
California, Mary Beth Rhodes of Redondo Beach,
California, Laura Lee Davis of Ten Mile and Arlene
Cowart of McMinnville; three sons, Cal McPherson of
Torrance, California, Shawn McPherson of Redondo Beach,
California and Howard Lane McPherson of Huntingdon;
three sisters, Margaret Jeannine Fuller of Orlando,
Florida, Marie Flanagan of Horn Lake, Mississippi and
Evelyn Saigon of Cordova; and 12 grandchildren.
Dilday Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Helen Rita Palke
1910-2003
HOLLOW ROCK: Mrs. Helen Rita Palke, 93, died on
Friday, September 12 at her home. A memorial service
will be held at a later date.
Mrs. Palke was born on April 5, 1910 in York Run,
Pennsylvania to the late Stanley and Antoinette Rafaez
Szaflarski. She was a retired cashier for the Montgomery
Ward Company and a member of the Holy Family Catholic
Church in Huntingdon. Nine brothers and sisters,
including Mr. Frank Swift of Hollow Rock, who died
September 14, 2002, preceded her in death.
She is survived by one son, Donald Palke of Hollow Rock
and many nieces and nephews, including Irene Gall of
Hollow Rock.
Carlos J. Palmer
1923-2003
BIG SANDY: Services for Carlos J. Palmer, 80, were
at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, September 16 at Stockdale-Malin
Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. John Burroughs
officiating. Interment followed in the Ramble Creek
Cemetery in Big Sandy.
Mr. Palmer died on Saturday, September 13 at
Jackson-Madison County General Hospital.
He was born April 13, 1923 in Carroll County to the late
Clifton Palmer and Bertie Mitchell Palmer. He was
self-employed and a Baptist.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia Mae Brewer Palmer;
two sons, Pat Palmer of Atwood and Johnny Palmer of
Idlewild; four sisters, Cassie Woods, Peggy Halford,
both of Atwood, Betty Conley of McKenzie and Joan Webb
of Milan; five grandchildren and eleven
great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by a son, Jackie Palmer;
two sisters, Jean Sanders and Polly Taylor and a
brother, Adrian Palmer.
Gracie R. Porter
1914-2003
SPRINGVILLE: Services for Gracie Russell Porter, 89,
were at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, September 13 at Quinn
Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church with the Rev.
John C. Campbell of Evergreen Missionary Baptist Church,
where she was a member, officiating. Burial was in the
Evergreen Church Cemetery.
Mrs. Porter was dead on arrival Tuesday morning,
September 9 at the Henry County Medical Center in Paris.
She was born in Springville on November 26, 1914 to the
late Polly Russell. She was the widow of Wilbert Porter,
who died on September 4, 1979.
As a member of the Evergreen Church, she served as a
youth Sunday school teacher and on the mother's board.
She leaves two daughters, Anna Van Dyke of Paris and
Bobbie Rowe of Springville; two sons, Jimmy Porter of
Springville and Fred Porter of Henry; one sister, Anna
Mae Boyd of Columbus, Ohio; 23 grandchildren; 48
great-grandchildren; and 22 great-great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Rosie Ruth
Porter; three sons, J.W., Charles and Joe Louis Porter;
three sisters, Rosie Booker, Elanor Hudson and Ada
Russell and two brothers, Thomas and Lee "Tump"
Russell.
Donna Leigh Tucker Slott
1966-2003
ATWOOD: Services for Donna Leigh Tucker Slott, 37,
were at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, September 11 at Bodkin
Funeral Home in Milan. Burial was in Pleasant Hill
Cemetery near Lexington.
Mrs. Slott died on Monday, September 8 at her home. She
was a member of the Corinth Baptist Church near Darden.
Survivors include her husband, Michael Slott of Atwood;
a daughter, Rachael Leigha Slott and a son, Christopher
Logan Slott, both of Atwood; her mother, Janis Carol
Tucker of Lexington; her father, Richard Tucker of
Huntingdon and a sister, Regina Tucker of Lexington.
Mary Gail Grenade Ward
1930-2003
MCKENZIE: Services for Mary Gail Grenade Ward, 73,
were at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, September 11 at Brummitt
Funeral Home with Bro. Tony Janner officiating. Burial
was in Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
Mrs. Ward died on Monday, September 8 at McKenzie Health
Care Center.
She was born March 14, 1930 in McKenzie to the late Mary
Lou Gilbert Grenade and William Gale Grenade. She was a
member of the First Cumberland Presbyterian Church in
McKenzie.
There are no immediate survivors.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Harlon
Ward and two sons, Edward Ward and Richard Ward.
Hallie Day Witherspoon
1910-2003
HUNTINGDON: Mrs. Hallie Day Witherspoon, 93, died on
Thursday, September 11 at the Life Care Center in
Bruceton. Funeral services were conducted on Sunday,
September 14 at 2:00 p.m. in the Dilday Funeral Home
Chapel with Brother James Daniels officiating. Interment
followed in the Bethlehem Cemetery.
Mrs. Witherspoon was born January 20, 1910 in Bemis to
the late George Griffin and Callie Edwards Day. She was
a homemaker and a member of the Prospect Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, B.F.
Witherspoon and a stepson, Johnny Witherspoon.
Survivors include one daughter, Alice Addonizio of Las
Vegas, Nevada; one son, Harry Johnson of Huntingdon; one
stepdaughter, Betty Pemberton of Romoeville, Illinois;
two stepsons, B.F. Witherspoon, Jr. of Brandywine,
Maryland and Billy Witherspoon of Jackson; six
grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; 13
step-great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren
and several step-great-great- grandchildren.
