On Wednesday, April 2, two of our students who go to the
Carroll County Technical Center in Huntingdon attended
the annual Career Development Conference at the Carl
Perkins Civic Center in Jackson. Sonia Gonzalez competed
in Employment Interview and Kasey Nicholson in Public
Speaking. Kasey won a third place trophy for her speech
entitled "Doing Your Best in Career Preparation." Both
Kasey and Sonia are members of the Carroll County
Technical Center Tennessee Career Association. The
Career Association is part of the Jobs for Tennessee
Graduates Program offered at the Huntingdon site.
Sponsor of the local club is Brenda Patterson.
Congratulations to them for representing our school
well.
The softball team had limited action last week because
of the inclement weather. The team did play a home game
against South Fulton on Tuesday. Brittany Carpenter
pitched well but lost to the visiting team by a score of
2-0. In the game Brittany pitched a no-hitter in the
loss. The sole hit of the game was a double by Lady
Rebel Leah Wallace. On Thursday, the team returned to
district action at Milan and pounded the Lady Bulldogs
10-1. Brittany Carpenter picked up the victory. Brittany
(3 for 5), Leah Wallace (3 for 3), and Jalisa Brown (3
for 4) had the hot bats for the Lady Rebels. This
weekend the Lady Rebels played in the Covington
Invitational Tournament. They did defeat South Side 5-1
and Halls 6-0, but lost to Brighton 5-3 and Collierville
7-2.
This week the softball team plays at home against Milan
on Monday, at home against Camden on Tuesday, and at
Waverly on Wednesday.
The baseball team also had limited action last week
because of the weather and of having other teams
rearranging their schedules to make-up lost district
games. On Thursday, the Rebels lost to Greenfield 7-4. A
few errors in key situations hurt the Rebels chance of
winning with all Greenfield's runs being unearned. Drew
Hayes did manage a homerun in the loss. On Friday, the
Rebels took to the road to square off against district
foe Parsons-Riverside. Against the Panthers, the Rebels
won by a count of 5-3. Senior Brian Winston pitched the
Rebels to victory and firmly placed the team in second
place in the district behind the Lexington Tigers, the
defending state champions. This week the team will play
host to Camden on Wednesday in district action.
School will not be in session on Friday of this week. It
will serve as a spring break day.
This is a reminder to parents that Progress Reports were
issued on Tuesday, April 15. The 15th marked the
three-quarters point in the semester. Students with a D
or F average are in danger of failing for the semester
and receiving no credit for the class that they are
taking. As always, I suggest parent-teacher conferences
or communication to try to salvage a credit for the
semester in the affected class. Teachers have been
calling parents of students who are not doing well at
this point in the year.
On Tuesday, April 22, 25 of our students will attend the
annual Math Competition at the University of Tennessee
at Martin. Our students have attended this competition
for many years and have placed at a high level from year
to year. I will report the results as they are forwarded
to me.
Last Friday the track team competed in the Rotary Relay
Track Meet in Union City. The boys had these results:
Shawn Luna - 5th place in the shot put with a toss of
over 38 feet and the boys 2-mile relay team of Caleb
Owen, Greg Pruiett, Kent Osment, and Ty Winkler
finishing 5th with a time of 9:54. The girl's team fared
much better with Julie Smith having an outstanding meet.
Julie won the discus event with a throw of 86 feet
beating the nearest competitor by 6 feet. She finished
5th in the shot put and 6th in the triple jump. Jessica
Johnson had a good meet throwing the discus over 65 feet
for a 6th place ranking. Hope Wyder, running her first
competitive 100-meter dash, finished 5th, a quarter of a
second behind the winner. The 440-yard relay team of
Julie Smith, Mallory Brandon, Renee Crawley, and Hope
Wyder finished 5th with a time of 2:02, and the
mile-relay team of Mallory Brandon, Mary Holland,
Crystal Maddox, and Crystal Mann also finished 5th. The
two-mile relay team of Mary Holland, Crystal Mann, Terri
Mask, and Kayla Dudley ran 6th with a time of 13:40.
Overall the girls finished 8th out of 16 teams present.
This Thursday the team travels to USJ for their annual
meet.
The band and honors chorus will have the annual Spring
Concert on Monday, April 21 at 7:00 P.M. in the Theater.
This annual event allows us to showcase the talent of
our students with musical ability that are involved in
these two programs. The band is directed by Keith
Breeden and the honors chorus is directed by Dawn Clubb.
Last Friday the band competed in the U.T.M. Solo and
Ensemble. We have attended this event for many years.
The students are rated by musical ability on a scale of
1(Superior) to 5(Poor). Students receiving a 1 rating
get a blue medal and those receiving a 2 get a red
medal. The high school band had 26 entries. Of those 26,
18 had a rating of Superior (Blue) and 8 had a rating of
Excellent (Red). The high school and middle school had a
total of 46 entries and all earned a rating 1 or 2.
Congratulations to the band program.
The Beta Club will be inducting new members into the
organization on Tuesday, April 29, at 7:00 P.M. in the
Theater. The Beta Club is a national honor and service
organization devoted to the highest qualities of
character and academic achievement. Zia McKennie, one of
the Beta Club sponsors, has sent invitations to students
who qualify for this high honor. After receipt of the
dues and their installation on April 29, these students
will join the hundreds of thousands who have committed
to the high standards that Beta represents. Parents are
invited to attend this special and impressive ceremony
on April 29 when we induct these new members. |
