The baseball team had a single game last week at home
against Camden. In this key district contest, the Rebels
had strong pitching from freshman Drew Hayes who allowed
only one run to score on a homerun. He had good support
from his offense with the key hits by senior Jay Taylor
who went 2 for 2 with a triple and homerun. This week
the Rebels have two more district games on Monday and
Friday against Lexington and Riverside respectively.
Both of these games are at home. On Wednesday, the team
travels to Huntingdon to do battle against our
cross-county rival.
The softball team played three games last week winning
one and losing two. On Monday, they defeated Milan by a
score of 9-4 to help maintain their second place
standing in the district. Kristin Wiggins homered for
the team to supply the key hit. On Tuesday they battled
the ever-tough Camden Lady Lions. Brittany Carpenter
pitched a brilliant game, but the bats of the Lady
Rebels were silent as the home team fell 1-0. On
Wednesday, the Lady Rebels traveled to Waverly against
the mid-state powerhouse. The Lady Rebels played closely
for five innings but were victims of errors and then
timely hitting by the Waverly nine. This week the girls
return home to play Riverside on Monday, Lexington on
Wednesday, and Gleason on Thursday. All of these home
games will begin at 4:30 P.M.
The Junior-Senior Prom will be this Saturday at 7:00
P.M. Students and their dates should be ready to go
through the promenade in the Theater at 7:00 P.M. They
will then enjoy a slide show presentation by the junior
class in honor of the senior class. Students will then
enjoy hors d'oeuvres and punch courtesy of the junior
class. The dance will be from 9:00 - 11:30 P.M. Students
have received instruction as to proper attire and
appropriate dancing. The school's goal is to provide a
safe, fun, and alcohol and drug-free environment to make
this night a memorable occasion.
Project Graduation will have a meeting Thursday night in
the gymnasium at the high school at 6:30 P.M. The
Project Graduation fundraisers are winding down, and
this meeting is set to work on plans to finalize the
alcohol and drug-free post-graduation celebration on May
16. Also, anyone who purchased a defective tape of the
Great Pretenders may bring that tape to the meeting on
April 24 to exchange it for a good one.
On Thursday, April 24, the Carroll County Democratic
Women will sponsor a voter registration sign-up for
students of age at our school. This is the second year
that this organization has sponsored this drive to get
young people involved in the election process. With the
small percentage of eligible voters actually voting,
perhaps this sign-up will make these young people more
involved in the responsibility of voting in local,
state, and national elections.
The Beta Club has moved its induction ceremony to
Tuesday, April 29, at 7:00 P.M. in the Theater. About 25
young scholars who have earned a 92 average will be
inducted into the club. The induction ceremony reminds
each student of his/her responsibility as a Beta member.
Beta has a high standard of academics and has character
standards for those who chose to join. Ms. Zia McKennie
is the Beta sponsor who is organizing this event.
Our band and Miss McKenzie Royalty will represent our
school in the Fish Fry Parade this Friday. School will
be in session on this day. We were originally scheduled
to be out on this day, but because of the excessive snow
during the winter, we will have school on Friday, April
25.
We have several upcoming dates of importance that you
may want to put on the calendar.

gymnasium
Gateway Exams May 6-8 - Algebra I, Biology I, and
English II
Senior Exams May 7-8
Strawberry Festival May 9 - School not in session
Baccalaureate May 11 @ 8:00 P.M. at Bethel College

The track team traveled to Jackson for the highly
competitive U.S.J. Invitational. Over 20 schools
participated in the meet and brought some of the best
athletes in the area to test their skills. The boys team
of Caleb Owen, Greg Pruiett, Kent Ozment, and Ty Winkler
had a 5th place finish in the 3200-meter relay. Andrew
Cross tossed the discus over 100 feet for an 8th place
berth. In the girls' competition, Julie Smith had a
strong meet by running 8th in the 400 meter, throwing
3rd in the discus and leaping for 5th in the triple
jump. Hope Wyder sprinted for 8th place in the 100-meter
dash. Sarah Hartz ran third in the 800 meter, an event
that has become her specialty. Renee Crawley hurled the
shot out for 4th place. In the relays, Kayla Dudley,
Crystal Mann, Amber King, and Mary Holland ran 5th in
the 3200-meter relay. Julie Smith, Mallory Brandon,
Sarah Hartz, and Hope Wyder finished in 6th place in the
400-meter relay. Mallory Brandon, Kim Gaskins, Amber
King, and Mary Holland ran 4th in the 1600-meter relay
race. The next track meet is Monday, April 28, at USJ. |
