This week McKenzie High School will present its annual
drama production with the comedy/parody Alice in
Americaland. Approximately 30-40 students in Ms.
Corbin's Art II class and from the student body have
worked long hours to make this production possible. Ms.
Corbin, serving as director of the play, has assigned
each student a responsibility in the play either on
stage or behind the scenes. The students will perform
the play on Saturday, April 5 at 7:30 P.M. and on
Sunday, April 6 at 2:30 P.M. The public may buy advanced
tickets for $5.00 or for $7.00 at the gate. The play
promises to be entertaining as our school gets to
showcase the dramatic and artistic talent of our
students.
The Spanish Club will compete in the Foreign Language
Competition at the University of Tennessee at Martin on
Thursday, April 3. Approximately 30 students in grades
9-12 have entered the four areas of competition: Poster
Competition, Language/Culture Books in French and
Spanish, Videotaped Skits in French and Spanish, and
Bake-off. The day will also feature international
students who will comment on the culture/country that
they represent and give various live presentations. The
competition is coordinated by U.T.M. with input from the
foreign language instructors of West Tennessee. Spanish
teachers at our school are Carol Brewster and Erika
Cole.
On Tuesday, April 8, Ms. Dianne Anderson will have a
review session for the ACT test. This review session
will focus on test-taking skills and techniques rather
than an emphasis on the body of knowledge that the ACT
will test. The review session will begin at 6:00 P.M. in
the high school library and go for approximately two
hours. As I have mentioned before, most college
scholarships, apart from those based on need, have
standardized test scores as the foundation upon which
money is awarded. Students should attempt to do their
best and to retake the test to make the highest score
possible. A few points increase in an ACT composite
score can literally mean thousands of dollars in college
scholarship opportunity. The next ACT assessment is on
Saturday, April 12. Most of our students have chosen
Bethel College as their test site.
McKenzie High School proudly belongs to the Southern
Association of Colleges and Schools, a prestigious
organization that emphasizes high academic and
membership standards. We were one of the first area
schools to join the association in the early 1950's and
have maintained creditable membership since then. On
Tuesday, April 8, and Wednesday, April 9, our school
will undergo its 5-year Peer Review Visitation. We will
host five educators who will perform an audit of our
school. Our School Improvement Plan team has worked to
generate a document that details what our major goals
and objectives are for the next two years and to clarify
our vision and beliefs. We look forward to the visit and
to getting suggestions on how our school can get better.
On Wednesday, April 2, Ms. McKennie -- our Beta sponsor
-- and Karen McCaleb -- a local Relay for Life volunteer
-- will chaperone 16-20 Beta Club members to Nashville
to attend the third annual "Day on the Hill" sponsored
by CHART, Campaign for a Healthy and Responsible
Tennessee. Students will leave here at 8:00 A.M. and go
to the War Memorial Auditorium for legislative priority
briefings. After lunch, they will go to the State
Capital to visit one of our legislatures, to tour the
Capital, and to sit in a session of the House and
Senate. They are scheduled to return to school by 6:00
P.M. CHART, a coalition funded by the American Cancer
Society, American Heart Association, and American Lung
Association, is comprised of over 30 health and
community organizations. The goal of CHART is to prevent
and to reduce disease, disability, and death caused by
tobacco use. This ties in directly to the Relay for Life
theme for responsible living. Ms. McCaleb has arranged
this great experience for the Beta Club Relay for Life
team. She also coordinated transportation through the
church bus of the Church of Christ. We are indebted to
the church and to Ms. McCaleb for this trip.
On Friday, April 4, we will take Buddy Pictures
beginning at 8:00 P.M. Lifetouch Photography will be
here to furnish the professional photography. Groups of
students up to 10 may pose for $7.00 each. Each person
will receive one 5 x 7 photo and four wallet-size
photos. Add-on specials are available. Students may pick
order forms up from the front office. Only one packet is
necessary for a group. We will use the pre-pay method as
we have always done. Checks should be payable to
Lifetouch Photography.
The baseball team played two games last week. On
Thursday they traveled to Martin Westview. The team
pounded the ball in an impressive 19-8 victory. Robert
Jones went the distance for the win. John French went
four for six at the plate. On Friday the Rebels
journeyed to Lexington to take on district rival and the
defending state champions Lexington Tigers. Senior Brian
Winston pitched a masterful game holding the Tigers
scoreless until the bottom of the seventh. The Tigers
then pushed across two runs to take the game into extra
innings. After holding us without a run, the Tigers
scored to seal a 3-2 victory -- ironically the same
score as our football game against Lexington this year.
This week the Rebels play at Milan on Tuesday and at
Milan on Thursday through Saturday to play in a
tournament. The record of the baseball stands at 6-3, an
impressive start for a team that had to fill several
slots after the graduation of seven seniors.
Our softball team defeated Dresden 3-0 at home last
Wednesday. Sophomore Brittany Carpenter had a
complete-game shut-out. On Thursday, the team lost to
Camden 7-0. This weekend they returned to Waverly to
play in a tournament there. On Friday, they split games
losing to Hickman County by a score of 3-1 and defeating
Clarksville Northwest by a score of 4-0. The Saturday
games were cancelled because of the weather. This week
they played Huntingdon on Monday, at Westview on
Tuesday, at home against Henry County on Wednesday for a
doubleheader, at Lexington on Thursday in district
action, and at home against Obion County on Friday.
The Balfour representative will be here on Tuesday,
April 1, to meet with sophomores regarding the purchase
of class rings. Students will receive packets of
information with options on type of rings and on the
features for the rings. He will return on Friday to take
orders during lunch. Students who purchase rings must
have a $60.00 deposit on Friday payable to Balfour.
McKenzie High School offers this as a service. We do not
benefit from the sales. Student and parents may purchase
rings elsewhere or not at all.
The Balfour representative will also be here on
Wednesday, April 2, during lunch to deliver graduation
supplies. The balances due are posted in the hallways
for students to have their money ready. Purchases must
be made by cash, certified check, or money order payable
to Balfour.
The track team had its first meet of the season on
Saturday at Jackson in the JCM Invitational. Thirteen
schools competed in the meet. Our boys finished 6th and
our girls won a trophy by finishing 3rd. Our boys had
several contestants place in the top eight. The girls
had these finishes in the top three: Julie Smith (1st)
in the discus (86' 61/2"), Renee Crawley (3rd) in the
shot put (26' 41/2"), Julie Smith (3rd) in the triple
jump (23' 4"), Sarah Hartz (3rd) in the 800 meters,
Julie Smith (2nd) in the 200 meters (29.72), and Renee
Crawley (3rd) in the high jump (4' 2"). Coach Duncan was
highly complimentary of the effort and performance of
the squads. This meet will give them a foundation to
build the rest of the season. |
