The softball team had a successful week in district
action. On Monday the Lady Rebels narrowly lost to
Riverside by a score of 3-2. The next day the Lady
Rebels extracted revenge by traveling to Riverside and
bringing home a 6-1 victory. On Wednesday, the team
played one of its better games of the season in a 10-0
thrashing of the Lady Tigers of Lexington. Brittany
Carpenter pitched a brilliant no-hitter. Kayla Bomar (2
for 2), Courtney Creasy (3 for 4), and Jalisa Brown (3
for 4) had solid offensive stats for the team which
improved to a record of 15-14. Next week the girls
travel to South Fulton on Monday and Huntingdon on
Wednesday. The tournament will begin on Thursday with
the Lady Rebels playing at home against a team to be
determined. On Monday, the tournament site will shift to
Camden with our opponents to be determined later.
The baseball team played Lexington, one of the premiere
teams in the state on Monday, and was drilled by the
superior firepower of their opponents by a score of
15-1. On Wednesday the Rebels played another powerhouse
in the Huntingdon Mustangs. Jake Smith, pitching for the
first time this year after early season arm troubles,
tossed a masterful game. He left the game with the score
knotted at 2-2. Freshman Drew Hayes homered again for
the Rebels, but the team fell to its cross-county rival
3-2. The team closed out its regular season on Monday
against Union City on the road and at home on Tuesday
against Riverside. District Tournament action for the
Rebels will begin on May 1 at Milan with our opponent to
be determined later.
On April 22, several of our math students received
honors at the UTM Math Competition. In geometry junior
Andrew Cross earned 19th place and junior Kent Ozment
had a 7th place finish. In calculus, Ryan Lacey finished
in the top ten. Congratulations to these students and
their teacher, Ms. Paula Doster.
The tennis teams completed their regular season with a
match at Lexington. The young, inexperienced netters
lost to Lexington in both girls' and boys' action. The
lone victory was by Jessica Maynard who won her singles
match 8-5. Tournament drawings will take place next week
and the tournament will start on Thursday, May 1 at USJ.
Our band marched in the Paris Fish Fry Parade and did
very well. They won the Sweepstakes Trophy for the best
overall performance by a band in their division. They
also placed first in the instrumental band category,
first in the color guard category, first in percussion,
and second in field commander. They competed against
nine other bands in their category. They will march
again on May 9 at the West Tennessee Strawberry Festival
Parade. Congratulations to them and to Mr. Breeden, our
band director.
On Friday, May 2, we will have our annual Awards Day
Program at 10:00 A.M. in the gymnasium. Award Day
recognizes the outstanding academic and leadership
accomplishments of our student body during the past
year. Over 100 students will receive special recognition
during this time. We encourage parents and the community
to attend our Award Day presentation. It is always a
special day when we applaud those members of our student
body who have excelled in the classroom or in the
leadership of our clubs, organizations, classes, or
community.
The track team will have a meet at USJ on Monday, April
28. This meet is a small one that will have only a
limited number of teams. The team will travel to
Dyersburg to participate in the Dyersburg Invitational.
This meet will involve approximately 20 teams and will
offer stiff competition to the team. The team will
compete on Thursday, May 8, at the Regional Track meet
at USJ.
The band will have its annual Band Banquet on Friday,
May 2, at 6:30 P.M. in the cafeteria. Mr. Breeden and
his senior students will recap the highlights of their
marching and concert seasons. Senior band members
attending this farewell banquet are Chase Barton, Jeff
Bunn, Deanna Hickman, Matthew Holt, Nick Laws, Alissa
Lee and Crystal Mattox. Mr. Breeden will present
students certificates and will recognize outstanding
sectional leaders and overall band members.
The final session of Youth Leadership Carroll County
will be this Wednesday, April 30 from 8:15 A.M. to 2:00
P.M. Youth Leadership Carroll County serves as a means
of instilling leadership in the county's students for
each special school district. In addition, students
learn valuable information about the demographics of
Carroll County, the businesses and industries in the
area, and the governmental institutions of the county.
One of the highlights of this session is a joint session
with the Adult Leadership Carroll County Program. Dr.
Nick Dunagan, U.T. - Martin Chancellor, will address
both groups with an after lunch presentation. The five
McKenzie High School students that have attended Youth
Leadership Carroll County are Mark Anderson, Julie
Smith, Jennifer Summers, Jay Taylor, and J.C. Johnsonius.
If these students attend U.T. Martin, they will receive
a $1000 Leaders-in-Residence Scholarship for their
freshman year. Youth Leadership Carroll County is
organized by Brad Hurley and Joel Washburn.
The Beta Club is currently raising money for its Relay
for Life Team. The team is doing a number of activities
here at school as in selling chain links and luminaries.
They have also sacked groceries at E.W. James to solicit
toys for the teams. Beta sponsor Zia McKennie has set
their goal at raising $1000 for the American Cancer
Society. The Relay for Life event for North Carroll is
Friday, May 9. Many thanks to E.W. James for allowing us
to raise money for this worthy cause.
Last Friday, our Future Problem Solving team made up of
Lee Barham, Kate Hames, and Caleb Owen attended the
state competition at McGavock High School in Nashville.
Students had to complete a packet on the topic assigned
and then do a skit based on the topic. Our local team
finished 3td in the state and represented us very well.
Congratulations to them.
