The golf team began its season last Thursday with a
three-way match with Huntingdon and Clarksburg. The
girls fell to Huntingdon with Tish Brown and Megan Cox
both shooting 58 to lead the Lady Rebels. The boys
recorded two wins over the Mustangs and Rockets in their
initial match of the year. Medalist for the day was
freshman Carson Rider who posted a 39 on the difficult
back nine holes at Carroll Lake Golf Course. Sophomore
Justin Wilson recorded a 40 while Jake Brown, Justin
Petering, and Marshall Smith all fired 41’s.
Members of the girls’ team are Tish Brown, Courtney
Creasy, Kristi Petering, and Megan Cox. Members of the
boys’ team are Craig Broadbent, Beau Brown, Jake Brown,
John French, Mikey King, Justin Petering, Carson Rider,
Marshall Smith, and Justin Wilson.
This week the teams play at Camden on Tuesday and at
home against Huntingdon and Gleason on Thursday. We are
again grateful to Monte Cunningham and Carroll Lake Golf
Course for providing us a home course to practice and
compete in our matches. Attending the match on Thursday,
I noted that the course is in excellent shape. It is a
great recreational facility for our community.
The junior class will meet with a representative from
Q.S.P. on Tuesday, August 26, during homeroom to discuss
their magazine sales drive. Q.S.P. is a leading magazine
clearinghouse that offers top-quality publications
including its flagship product, Reader's Digest. Each
year the juniors use this fundraiser as a means to
finance the Junior-Senior Prom and to fund many of the
class expenses during their senior year. The class has
as its goal the sale of 7-10 magazines per student and
approximately $10,000 for the class. Students who sell
their prescribed number – 7-10 magazines – will not have
to pay anything to attend prom. Those who do not sell
will have to pay between $70.00 -$100 to attend. We are
giving students an opportunity to earn this money
without its becoming a personal expense. I ask the
McKenzie community to support these young people as they
sell these quality products.
The high school football team ended its pre-season
scrimmage schedule last Tuesday in a game with Henry
County. The Rebel offense looked much improved as did
the defense in defeating the 5-A school by a score of
4-1. The ground and air attack both gelled for the
Rebels as the offense consistently moved the ball. The
defense played better as a unit with the return of
senior Brad Campbell. This week the Rebels play
Lexington in the third quarter of the jamboree in
Huntingdon. Tickets may be purchased in the front office
for $5.00. All of this money remains in McKenzie.
Tickets purchased at the gate will be divided among the
8 schools after expenses. Please see a football player
or come to the high school for tickets.
We continue to sell season passes for our regular high
school varsity, freshman, and B-games. The price of the
non-transferable pass is $25.00. These may be purchased
at the office during school hours. These are individual
passes and are a great way to get into the stadium
quickly.
Yearbooks for the 2002-03 school year were distributed
last Friday. Graduates of the Class of 2003 may come to
the office during school hours to get their yearbooks.
We do have a limited number of extra copies which are on
sale for $40.00. These sales will be done on a
first-come, first-served basis.
The cross country team began its season with an
organizational meeting last Thursday. Students met with
Coach Christina French to discuss completion of
paperwork and expectations for the season. Students
should have completed their physical, purchased
insurance, and submitted their consent-to-treat form to
Coach French prior to the first practice. The team began
their practice season on Monday and will practice on a
daily basis. Twelve girls and ten boys attended the
meeting of these fall athletes.
By this time in the semester, students have finalized
their schedules. It is the practice of our school to
place students in their requested classes if possible
and to present them a challenging course load in their
pathway. We especially scrutinize the schedules of
seniors to insure that they are taking those courses
needed to graduate and to provide them with 8 credits to
prepare them for their goal of entering the work force,
joining the military, or attending a
technical/vocational school, 2-year college program, or
4-year institution. We ask that parents assist us in
helping these students reach their full potential. If
your child has a problem in a class, please notify the
teacher for advice or possible tutorial assistance. This
small step may provide the push needed to pass a class.
Last week students elected their class officers for the
2003-04 school year. The freshman class officers are as
follows: president, Samantha Doster; vice-president,
Jenna Smith; Secretary, Anna Smith; treasurer, Wendy
Brown; reporter, Kia Bell; and Student Council
representative, Anna Trull. Sophomore officers elected
were Brice Priestley, president; vice-president,
Courtney Creasy; Secretary, Rema Salameh; Reporter,
Hunter Downing; and Student Council rep, Courtney
Wiggins. Officers in the junior class serve important
posts in overseeing the magazine sale drive and the
prom. Those elected are Rachael Clark, president; Randy
Lacey, v-president; Kelly Fowler, secretary; Brandi
Burke, treasurer; Ashley Carter, Report; and Jordan
Trull, Student Council Representative. The seniors
elected their officers last spring. Leading this year’s
graduating class are Bryan Huffman, president; Andrew
Cross, vice-president; Heather Flippin, treasurer; Sarah
Hartz, secretary; Jonathon Wood, reporter; and Daniel
Hollowell, Student Council representative.
Congratulations to this year’s school leaders. |
