The boys golf team upped its record to 6-0 for the
season with several wins this week. On Tuesday, the team
traveled to Camden to challenge the host team and
Riverside. The boys defeated Camden by 39 strokes and
Riverside by 1 stroke. Senior John French was the
medalist with a 38. Sophomore Beau Brown had a 41. On
Thursday, the team returned to Carroll Lake Golf Course
for a three-way match with Huntingdon and Gleason. With
all players scoring well in the scorching heat, the team
recorded a 4-player score of 150 which may be a school
record. Medalist John French had a 36. He was closely
followed by Beau Brown’s 37, Justin Wilson’s 38, and
Marshall Smith’s 39.
The girls’ team defeated Camden, but lost to Riverside
on Tuesday. Tish Brown and Kristi Petering both shot 56
for the Lady Rebels. On Thursday, the Lady Rebels lost
to both Gleason and Huntingdon. The margin was 3 strokes
to Huntingdon and a greater margin to a very good
Gleason team. This week both teams will be in action on
Tuesday with a 4-way match at Sharon against Dresden,
Trenton, and Greenfield and at home on Thursday against
Clarksburg and Gleason.
A reminder that our junior class will begin its magazine
sales drive this week. We contract with Q.S.P. which has
as its flagship publication Reader’s Digest to earn
money for the junior class to defray class expenses for
the prom and for many senior expenses. Please support
these young people as they sell hundreds of quality
publications.
The football team begins its season this week with a
home game against Obion County, a 3-A school which has
enjoyed successes for the past several years.
Expectations are high for our team after we have enjoyed
three consecutive seasons of playing well into the
playoff season. The Rebels completed pre-season work at
the Huntingdon Jamboree last Friday. In an abbreviated
game, the Rebels trailed Lexington 10-7 after the game
was called because of inclement weather. Both teams
showed explosive offenses with Lexington scoring first
on a 57-yard pass and McKenzie countering with a 67-yard
strike. After McKenzie had poor field position,
Lexington took advantage by booting a 46-yard field goal
to go up 10-7. The officials wisely called the game just
before the tremendous thunderstorm struck. The Rebels
will have their hands full this week with the talented
crew from Obion County which defeated us last year. Game
time at Rebel Stadium is 7:30 p.m.
We still have season tickets available for all varsity,
B-team, and freshman regular season games. The cost of
this regular season, home pass is $25.00. I encourage
everyone to take advantage of this opportunity to
support the Rebels and to get advanced tickets for the
game.
This week we received our ACT scores for the 2002-03
school year. Overall, we had an average score of 20.4,
up a half point since last year. This score matched the
state average of 20.4, but fell short of the national
average of 20.8. Our scores in the subgroups were as
follows: English, 20; mathematics, 19.4; reading, 20.6;
and science reasoning, 21.3. State averages on these
subgroups were English, 20.5; mathematics, 19.6;
reading, 20.8; and science reasoning, 20.2. The greatest
discrepancies that we had with the national average were
in mathematics and reading. I think that both of these
areas will strengthen locally because of the
re-introduction of reading as a separate class in the
middle school and the introduction of Algebra I /
pre-algebra in the middle school. With this initiative,
I think our students will be better prepared to do the
caliber of work expected of a high school student.
This week we will begin our preparation for the Writing
Assessment in February for our juniors. For the past two
years, we have taken time during classes to have
students address a writing prompt similar to the one
that our juniors will have in February. Teachers will
discuss the 5-paragraph composition and persuasive
writing techniques. Our freshmen should benefit from the
Power Writing technique that they learned last year to
help them become even better writers. The Writing
Assessment given by the State Department is graded on a
0-6 scale with 4 being the level of proficiency. Our
scores have improved each year since we began writing in
the classrooms on a periodic basis. Two years ago our
average score was 3.51. The next year it improved to
3.67. This year’s senior classes which took the test
last February had an average of 4.07. The percentage of
those scoring at proficient or above has improved from
around 60% to over 80%. It is our goal for all students
to score at the proficient level since writing is a
fundamental skill needed to succeed in work. The writing
prompts will be given every three weeks to all of our
students. It will be a part of each student’s grade in
the class in which the prompt is addressed.
School will not be in session on Monday, September 1. We
will observe the Labor Day holiday. We will be back in
session on Tuesday, September 2. |
