Notes From the High School |
|

By MHS Principal Terry Howell |

It seems that only yesterday we held graduation
exercises for the class of 2003. We now look forward to
a new year, with new challenges and opportunities.
Classes for the 2003-04 school year will begin with a
half-day for students on Monday, August 11. Students
will meet in the gymnasium for about 15-20 minutes and
then go to their respective homerooms for orientation
about policies and procedures and for their schedules
for the fall. Please assist us in having paperwork
complete as soon as possible that your child will bring
home on this first day.
During homeroom students will also receive School Day
Insurance packets. The low-cost plan helps to defray the
cost of accidents that may occur at school or at home,
depending upon the coverage you might choose. All
athletes, cheerleaders, band members, and physical
education students must have insurance or a statement
declaring that the student is covered by the parents'
plan.
Students will bring home their Student Handbook this
year to have parents read it and sign the necessary
sheet. We do want everyone to understand the operation
of our school, and this step insures that parents have
made a commitment to assist us in the education of their
child. The Student Handbook will serve as a hall pass so
that all students will need to keep up with their own
handbook.
This year we have four new faculty members. These
teachers are Anthony Campbell, Spanish; Tim Hess,
special education; Jeannine Lowe, computer and business;
and Elaine Walker, English I and journalism. The
addition of new faculty always means new ideas and
perspectives. We hope that these teachers will add to
the value of the lives of our students.
I encourage parents and students to be involved in the
activities of the school. Study after study notes that
the more involved students and parents are in the
activities of the school, the greater success and
happiness that that student will enjoy. Also, parents
are welcomed to meet with our teachers during planning
blocks to maximize the success of the students. Several
years ago a popular book entitled "It Takes a Village"
made a plea for involvement of the community, state and
nation in the development of a child. I am not sure that
this broad approach is correct, but I do know that the
cooperation of parents and teachers makes education of a
child much easier. Please feel free to call the school
to voice concerns, to volunteer to assist us, or to tell
of some positive things that you see. That will make our
mission much more successful.
Several of our students groups have already begun to
work to prepare for the upcoming year. The band under
director Keith Breeden had a two-week camp from July 21
- July 31. Each section and group had instructors to
give band members expert assistance in developing their
field show and competition show for the 2003 season.
Band members work countless hours in preparation for the
year. Their ultimate goal is to place in state
competition which is usually in October. Approximately
50 students are involved in band at the high school this
year. They also have plans to go to Orlando, Florida, in
April for their quad-annual band trip. Please support
them as they do fundraisers to make this trip. The Band
Boosters are planning many events to pay the cost of
this experience for our students.
The football team began practice in pads on July 28.
Approximately 50-55 young men have involved themselves
in summer weight-lifting and conditioning in preparation
for the first week of sanctioned TSSAA football
practice. They ended the first week with a controlled
scrimmage against the Jackson Christian Eagles here in
McKenzie. A good crowd turned out to see the scrimmage,
and they were not disappointed as the Rebels prevailed
21 - 6. This week the team scrimmages against Humboldt
and Southside on Tuesday at Humboldt and Crockett County
here in McKenzie on Friday. The team will compete in the
Huntingdon Jamboree on Friday, August 22, against the
Lexington Tigers. These young men and their coaches have
worked hard in the off-season to prepare for the
upcoming campaign.
This year our school will offer individual season passes
to all high school games. This pass will enable a person
to attend all high school varsity, B-team, and freshman
games. It does not cover the cost of middle school
contests. The $25.00 ticket may be purchased in the
office during school hours or from me after school
hours. The pass is only for the regular season. It is a
card that is non-transferable, non-refundable. It will
assist our fans in getting into the game quickly. I
encourage everyone to take advantage of this offer.
A reminder to parents that drivers are to drop off
students in the back in the morning. Pick-up in the
afternoon is in the front. Monday, August 11, will be a
half-day. Bus students will be dismissed at 11:15 and
all others at 11:20. We do look forward to this exciting
first day of school. |
