To all parents, this is a reminder that the Gateway
tests will be administered this week in Algebra I on
Tuesday, Biology I/biology for technology on Wednesday,
and English II on Thursday. As I have stated previously,
these tests are a requirement to pass for a student to
receive a regular high school diploma. They also count
15% of the 2nd semester grade for that class. These
tests are extremely important as they do affect student
status for graduation.
We have slightly altered our test schedule for final
exams. On Thursday, December 18, we will have our First
and Fourth Block tests. On Friday, August 19 (a half
day), we will have our Second and Third Block tests.
These comprehensive tests will count 20% of the grade
for the class.
Project Graduation will meet on Monday, December 15, at
7:00 P.M. in the Theater. They will meet with Ronnie
Arnold, the director of the Great Pretenders, who will
talk to students and parents about their roles and
performances in this year’s show which is scheduled for
February 14 and 15 at the Dickey Fine Art Center at
Bethel College. All parents and seniors need to meet for
this very important meeting which is a major fund-raiser
for the alcohol and drug-free celebration following
graduation ceremonies.
Ms. Herrin issued the Senior Newsletter last week. It
contained a great deal of valuable information. The
newsletter emphasized the importance of completing the
FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) as soon
as possible. The FAFSA is the document that the
government uses to determine a student’s eligibility for
federal student aid – including grants, scholarships,
work-study, and loans to help students pay for college.
The newsletter detailed the three ways that one can
complete the FAFSA which are on the web, through a
written form, or by phone. By far the best way is on the
web as it is processed efficiently and quickly, often
weeks before the written versions. The newsletter also
listed all the supporting documents needed to complete
the FAFSA. The newsletter explained how students and
parents may get their PIN (a 4-digit number to assist in
your signing your FAFSA. The newsletter gave the website
and the steps to take to get the necessary PIN. Ten
scholarship and programs were also listed in the
newsletter. Most of these are competitive and have a
deadline for students to apply. The February ACT
deadline is January 2. Again, students may apply on line
or by paper. A date for parents to mark is the January
22 Financial Aid workshop at 7:00 P.M. at the high
school. This explains the financial aid process for
colleges and universities, community colleges, technical
or trade schools.
I mention again the Rotary Charity Auction which is
scheduled for Saturday, December 13, from 9:00 A.M. to
1:00 P.M. on Channel 10. I mention this in the high
school article because the McKenzie Rotary Club has
become an integral partner of our school in helping us
achieve many of our goals. The club sponsors a delegate
to the American Legion Boys State/Girls State. They also
sponsor our annual Honors Banquet in the spring. They
recently began a scholarship for a graduating senior to
continue post-secondary education. A few months ago the
club donated a sizeable amount of money to the band for
their trip to Florida this spring. The McKenzie Rotary
Club also supports the elementary and middle schools and
has made a commitment to academic excellence and the
youth of our community. Tune in for some great bargains
on quality products.
Last Friday the basketball teams traveled to West
Carroll to battle the Lady War Eagles and Eagles. The
girls showed a great deal of spunk offensively and
defensively in beating their counterpart 66-34. The
girls were led by Hope Wyder who tallied 19 and Renee
Crawley and Anna Trull who both had 14. In the boys’
game, West Carroll proved to be dominant in defeating
the Rebels 73-64. The taller War Eagles controlled the
boards getting multiple offensive opportunities and
allowing us only one shot. John French with 24 points
and Bryan Huffman with 16 paced the Rebels. This Tuesday
the Rebels visit Bruceton and on Friday journey to
Parsons-Riverside to play their first district contest.
Come out and support the Rebels. Our first home game
will be Friday, December 19. It is not too late to get
season passes. Call the school for more information. |
