The basketball teams defeated Bruceton last Tuesday in
girls and boys action. The girls won hardily by a score
of 65-32. The team was led by Renee Crawley with 18
points, Hope Wyder with 13, and Sarah Hartz with 12. The
boys raced out to a 39-17 halftime lead and had to hold
on for a 61-48 victory. Bryan Huffman was the only
player in double figures with 21. John Craig Howell and
John French chipped in 9 and 8 respectively. In their
first district action of the year, the teams traveled to
Parsons-Riverside to take on the Panthers. Both teams
defeated their counterparts, but in different ways.
In the girls' contest, the Lady Rebels easily
outdistanced the Lady Panthers by a score of 64-31. Hope
Wyder (15), Anna Trull (14), Renee Crawley (12), and
Brooke Cole (10) all scored in double figures to pace
the Lady Rebels against their outmanned district
opponent. The Rebels found stiffer competition against
the host team. They trailed throughout most of the game
and appeared to be headed for certain defeat. The last
three minutes proved to be the difference maker as the
Rebels prevailed 64-62. The Rebels had four players in
double figures: John Craig Howell (16), John French
(16), Bryan Huffman (12), and Daniel Duncan (10).
The high school band and chorus presented their
Christmas program last Sunday at the Theater. The chorus
presented two selections - "The Twelve Songs of
Christmas" and "Santa Is the Man." The band entertained
the audience with five numbers - Santa's Classical
Christmas, Christmas Lullaby, Swingle Bells, White
Christmas, and Joyous Christmas. Both groups performed
under the direction of Keith Breeden.
The basketball teams will play at Dresden on Tuesday,
December 16. They will have their first home game on
Friday, December 19 against Clarksburg. During the
holidays the teams will play in the Huntingdon Point
Guard Tournament. The teams will play on Saturday,
December 27, with the boys competing against Adamsville
at 2:30 and the girls against Obion County at 8:30 P.M.
On Monday, December 29, the girls will battle F.C.A. at
7:00 P.M. and the boys against Crockett County at 8:30
P.m. The teams will then start the second half of the
season by traveling to Big Sandy on January 2 and
playing at home against Huntingdon on January 3.
The most important item this week is the final exams at
school scheduled for Thursday and Friday. On Thursday,
students will take their First and Fourth Block tests
during their scheduled time. On Friday - a half-day -
the students will take their Second and Third Block
tests. School will dismiss at 11:15 on Friday for the
holidays. Students who are exempt may leave at 11:30 on
Thursday provided they have a note from their parents
and they have cleared all fines and financial
obligations, and are exempt from their Third and Fourth
Block tests.
This week marks the end of the first term. Students
owing Time For Time must have this cleared up when we
dismiss for the holidays. Only under extenuating
circumstances will we allow students to clear this after
Christmas. Time For Time has met Monday through Thursday
for several months and many students have procrastinated
so that they now do not have enough days to complete
their obligations.
Kay Rogers with Hamilton Ryker spoke to Mrs. Carr's
marketing and international business classes last
Tuesday to explain real world employment issues. Mrs.
Rogers gave a great deal of statistical information
about job opportunities and unemployment data that
relates specifically to Carroll County. She also
addressed the application process and the use of resumés
to get employment. On Wednesday, students participated
in mock interviews using some of the techniques that
Mrs. Rogers presented in class the day before. McKenzie
High School appreciates the involvement of Mrs. Rogers
and Hamilton Ryker. Mrs. Carr has a similar format for
her spring classes with Manpower.
Mrs. Dianne Anderson and Ms. Ladona Herrin are arranging
a trip to Europe for young people from June 9, 2005 to
June 19, 2005. The trip to England, Ireland, and France
will include visits to several famous historical and
literary sites as well as a survey of the beautiful
landscapes of those countries. The trip is planned well
in advance so that interested parents can finance the
trip through an installment plan set up by the touring
company. This trip is not sponsored or endorsed by the
high school or the McKenzie Special School District, but
it does provide a great educational experience with
quality sponsors for those who choose to go. Those
interested may call Mrs. Anderson or Ms. Herrin.
The Leo Club, the student affiliate of the Lions Club,
helped last weekend with the Hometown Christmas
celebration. Students worked along side the adult Lion
members in selling tickets, helping with the parade,
manning booths, and other activities that the club does.
The Leo Club is an excellent organization that
introduces students to the concept of community service
and self-sacrifice. The club has also helped with the
Carroll County Business Expo and other projects in the
community. The club is sponsored by Dianne Anderson.
