On Monday, February 3, twenty members of the Business
Professionals of America attended the regional
competition for B.P.A. at the University of Tennessee at
Martin. In only its second year, the club represented
itself well by having ten of those students qualify for
the state competition to be held the first week of
March.
Heidi Thomas placed first in the Entrepreneur's
Speech Contest. Julie Smith took top honors in
Presentation Management. Jay Taylor and Jake Smith
garnered second and third place respectively in the
Financial Math Division. Leah Wallace had a second place
finish in Entrepreneurship. In Administrative Support
Concepts, Nicole Parham finished third. Andrew Cross
also had a third place finish in his category of
Parliamentary Procedure. Freshman Whitney Hopper earned
a fifth place finish in Fundamental Word Processing as
did freshman Brooke Ridley in Administrative Support.
Virginia Hames won fifth place in Prepared Speech.
The B.P.A. dedicates itself to developing skills necessary
to be competitive in the 21st Century marketplace. B.P.A.
sponsor is Mrs. Jackie Carr.
Last week students seeking Student Council office seats
for the 2003-2004 school year presented a campaign
speech over our Channel One television sets to the
student body. Students immediately voted for the
candidate of their choice. The results are as follows:
Amber King, president; Robert Jones, vice president;
Sarah Hartz, treasurer; Daniel Duncan, reporter; Mallory
Brandon, secretary; and John Craig Howell,
parliamentarian. The Student Council organizes
intramural activities, sponsors assembly programs, and
serves as the voice of the students. The Student Council
sponsor is Mrs. Paula Doster.
Valentine's Day is upcoming on Friday. This is a
reminder to parents and others about instructions on
items that may be transported on the bus. The two big
general items are balloons and glass containers.
Balloons may block the vision of the bus driver and
glass poses an obvious safety problem if broken. For
this reason, students receiving items may not take them
on the bus. Also, Valentine's Day items must be handed
to students directly by the vendor. We will arrange this
after school. Vendors will supply the school a list of
those receiving a Valentine's Day item which the school
will post outside the cafeteria. Students must check the
list to see if they received items. It is the
responsibility of the students to do this, not the
responsibility of the school to announce the names
individually.
On Friday and Saturday of this week seniors and their
parents will present their version of the Great
Pretenders at the Dickey Fine Arts Center at Bethel
College. The Saturday performance will be at 7:00 P.M.
and the Sunday matinee will be at 2:00 P.M. Advanced
general admission seats may be purchased for $5.00 and
reserved seats will sell for $7.00. Tickets may be
purchased from any senior. For information, call the
school at 352-2133.
Because of poor weather conditions, our Parent-Teacher
Conference scheduled for last Thursday has been
re-scheduled for Wednesday, February 12, from 3:30 -
6:30 P.M. We realize that this is short notice, but feel
that it is necessary to have these conferences as soon
as possible to inform parents regarding academic
progress. Our calendar is extremely tight and this
Wednesday was the only date this week that we could use.
We appreciate everyone working with us to make
Parent-Teacher Conference a successful, well-attended
event.
With progress reports and Parent-Teacher Conferences,
parents are reminded about Project Help sponsored by our
Beta Club. Beta Club members have volunteered themselves
to assist students with academic difficulties. Students
must complete an application for a tutor through the
front office. Then Beta Club sponsors will pair these
students with a Beta tutor. The student and Beta tutor
will work out an agreeable schedule to do the tutoring.
This program will assist students in specific classes,
in TCAP Competency Test review, and Gateway and
End-of-Course testing. Call the office for additional
information.
On Tuesday of last week the basketball team played at
Lexington in District 11-AA action. The girls improved
their district record to 5-2 with an impressive victory
over the Lady Tigers to climb into first place in the
district. The boys found the road difficult against the
Tigers. The Rebels played well in spurts but eventually
succumbed to the more athletic Tiger squad to remain
winless in the district. Friday's game against Big Sandy
was canceled because of the visiting school's regulation
that does not allow athletic travel on days that the
school is out because of bad weather. On Saturday the
Lady Rebels and Rebels traveled to Parsons to play their
final regular season district games against Decatur
County High School. The Lady Rebels needed an extra
period to defeat the Lady Panthers. Renee Crawley paced
the team with 17 points off the bench. The girls
captured first place in the district by the win. The
boys overcame first half difficulties to win their first
district game of the year. They managed a double digit
victory despite trailing by 18 points in the first half.
The games scheduled for this week are at Dresden on
Monday, at home against Huntingdon on Tuesday, and at
Gleason on Thursday. These are all non-district games
and are subject to change depending on our getting our
district games played. The district tournament is
scheduled for February 17-21. Call the school for
information regarding playing times for the boys and
girls. |
