On February 6, 7, and 8, several band students from our
school attended the 25th annual U.T.M. Honor Band
audition and competition. Approximately 600 students
from 40 schools across the state participated with
students selected to the various levels of bands based
on their musical accomplishments and their directors'
recommendation. Upon arrival on campus, students
auditioned for chair placement based on prepared music
presentation, major scales played, and sight-reading.
Students received placement in the following categories:
one band composed of 9th and 10th grade musicians only,
two bands composed of 11th and 12th grade students only,
and one group of percussion ensemble composed of the top
ten (10) overall percussionists. Once musicians
completed the auditions, they rehearsed with established
directors from across the Southeast. Their rehearsal
extended for approximately 16 total hours in preparation
for the public concert given on Saturday, February 8, on
the U.T.M. campus. Our school had 10 students placed for
the various bands. The members of the 9th-10th grade
band included Jillian Maynard, 4th chair euphonium;
Jonathan Watson, 5th chair alto sax; and David Deaton,
8th chair trumpet. Matthew Holt earned a place on the
exclusive 10-member percussion ensemble. In the
Symphonic Band (1st Band) for 11th-12th graders, the
members chosen were Christy Lowe - 2nd chair trumpet and
Chase Barton - 3rd chair tuba. The Concert Band (2nd
Band) had Renee Wilson - 3rd chair clarinet; Rebekah
Cooper - 4th chair clarinet; Brittany Washburn - 5th
chair flute, and Amanda Allen - 3rd chair French horn as
members. Congratulations to these talented musicians.
The basketball teams had a full week of action with two
away games and one home contest. On Monday at Dresden,
both teams suffered losses to the Lady Lions and Lions.
The Lady Rebels had a narrow halftime lead, but
succumbed to the pressure defense of Dresden by a score
of 48-38. The boys also lost a hard fought contest to
the Lions. After falling behind the Dresden team by
double digits in the first half, the Rebels shrank the
lead to four points before Dresden pulled away for the
victory. On Tuesday, the home crowd said goodbye to the
senior basketball players and cheerleaders. Cheerleaders
Emily Kee and Monica Mayberry cheered for the last time
at home while Lady Rebels Jennifer Johnson, Jasmine
McMaskins, Julie Smith, Becky Toombs, and Kristin
Wiggins and Rebel Ryan Drewry played their finale
against Huntingdon. The Lady Rebels played a defensive
gem and defeated the 8th ranked team in the state by a
score of 33-23. The Lady Rebels ended the regular season
at 12-8 and 6-2 in the district. The Rebels played the
Mustangs to a close game, but let a poor third quarter
ruin their chance of victory. The Mustangs prevailed
57-46. Congratulations to Homecoming queen Julie Smith
and her court of Mallory Brandon, Ryan Lacey, Jasmine
McMackins, and Kasey Nicholson. On Thursday the teams
traveled to Gleason for non-district contests. The Lady
Rebels defeated the Lady Bulldogs by a score of 47-45.
It was the first victory over Gleason in many years and
ended the Lady Rebels' regular season at 13-8. The boys
swept the Bulldogs for the season with a 43-39 win. The
boys improved to 5-15 heading into the tournament this
week.
This week the teams begin tournament play at Lexington.
The Rebels were scheduled to play on Monday against
Riverside High School at 8:00. If they won, the boys
will play top-seeded Milan on Thursday at 6:30 P.M. The
top-seeded girls open their tournament play on Tuesday
at 6:30 against the winner of the Milan-Riverside game.
They automatically qualify for regional play next week.
A reminder to parents that the TCAP-Competency Test will
be given the last week of February for students who have
not passed the language or math section of the test.
Tutoring is available from Beta Club students or from
teachers during homeroom. Juniors and seniors must pass
both sections of this test to qualify for a regular
diploma. This is the last opportunity for seniors prior
to May graduation. Help is available for those who
choose to take advantage of it.
Although our juniors have taken the state-mandated
Writing Assessment, we will continue to write across the
curriculum. Once a month we plan to write to a prompt
using the 5-paragraph format and using the persuasive
writing technique. Improved writing is a focus of our
School Improvement Plan, and we have as our goal to make
all students proficient writers by the time that they
graduate. Writing and communication skills in general
are essential tasks for students in about any job, and
our goals reflect the commitment to improve student
writing ability.
Spring sports officially began practice last week. Our
spring sports include baseball, softball, tennis, and
track and field. Because our coaches and players overlap
into basketball, many of those teams will get a better
start after the basketball season ends. Please pay
attention to our spring sports schedule. Games and
matches may begin during the week of March 10-14.
On Wednesday, February 12, we had our spring
Parent-Teacher Conference. This was a make-up date from
last week's scheduled day because of the snow. Although
parents had short notice, the attendance was fairly
good. I hope for a 100% attendance, but have set 75% as
a high standard. Our actual attendance was about 46%.
The freshmen parents had 33% attendance. The sophomores
had 59%. the juniors had 50% and the seniors had 43%.
Those students whose parents did not attend on Wednesday
received their progress reports on Thursday. This is the
time for parents and teachers to work together to
correct academic or behavioral issues before the problem
gets out of hand. Parents unable to attend may request
conferences by calling the school.
Our DECA Club competed in the regional contest at UTM
last Thursday for the opportunity to advance to the
state level. Those advancing include these winners: Ryan
Lacey and Jasmine McMackins, Hospitality Services
Management; Mark Anderson and Thomas Clark, E-Commerce
Management; and Jeff Bunn and Brian Winston, E-Commerce
Business Plan. Students who earned Special Recognition
for high scores, but not ordinary to state are Hope
Wyder and Brittany Taylor, Retail Merchandising; Bryan
Huffman and Matthew Jones, Marketing Management; and
Leah Wallace, Full Service Restaurant. Congratulations
to these students. |
