On Thursday, February 6, we will have our Spring
Semester Parent-Teacher Conference from 3:30 P.M. --
7:00 P.M. at the school. Each parent will receive a
student progress report at these conferences from the
teachers. These conferences enable parents to get a
headstart on possible academic or behavioral problems
that might impede appropriate progress. Beta Club
students will serve as guides for the day to show
parents to the various classrooms. I encourage everyone
to attend.
The Beta Club, under the sponsorship of Zia McKennie and
Jo Elam, will begin a tutoring program for students
experiencing academic problems beginning after February
7. The program, entitled Project Help, is designed to
assist students whose grades are poor or who have
trouble understanding the concepts and skills of a
particular class. Students interested in receiving help
may come to the office and complete an application. A
tutor will be assigned, and the tutor and student will
work out a schedule. This program may be used for
students needing help in classes or on the
state-mandated tests -- Competency, Gateway, or
End-of-Course Exams.
On Wednesday, students may go to the guidance office to
pick up applications to this year's Honor Banquet.
Students need to complete the applications and return
them to see if they meet the qualifications necessary to
be invited to the banquet which is scheduled for March
25. The Honors Banquet Committee is busy getting ready
for this event that recognizes academic excellence. The
Honors Banquet is sponsored by the McKenzie Rotary Club.
We have also benefited by the assistance of Southern
Scientific and Charter Communications. Parents should
advise their young people to apply to attend this
special banquet and recognition program.
Members of the baseball team are selling subscriptions
to ESPN -- The Magazine. This two year subscription
sells for $40.00. Of that, the school will receive 75%
of the money collected. Anyone who would be interested
in purchasing a subscription may call the school for
more information.
Ms. Herrin, our guidance counselor, has applications for
two scholarships -- the Caledonia Masonic Lodge No. 96,
McKenzie and the Will R. Manier Rotary Scholarship.
Seniors may pick these up to complete. The first
scholarship has a deadline of February 14. The second
has a deadline of February 28. It is important for
students to apply for these scholarships to receive
financial assistance. The Masonic Lodge has given this
local scholarship for many years and benefited many of
our students. The Rotary Scholarship is a competition
among young people in areas represented by District
6740.
Homecoming for basketball is this week with several
activities planned. Last week students participated in
the intramural basketball competition. Contests will
continue this week with the championship of the girls'
and boys' class competition on Friday. The Navy Band is
scheduled to be at the school on Friday. This has been a
popular group with the students for many years. Classes
will also participate in a coin contest to raise money
for the American Heart Association. Friday, February 7,
we will play the Homecoming game against Big Sandy. Our
Homecoming Royalty -- which consists of Mallory Brandon,
Ryan Lacey, Jasmine McMaskins, Kasey Nicholson, and
Julie Smith -- will be recognized at 6:00 P.M. on Friday
with the queen crowned by senior Ryan Drewry. From 10:00
P.M. - 11:30 P.M., we will have our Homecoming dance.
Students have been advised of proper dress and
appropriate dancing in school. Between the girls' and
boys' games, we will have Senior Night. We will
recognize our seniors and their parents and show our
appreciation for the work they have done in our
basketball and cheerleading programs.
The basketball teams played two games last week against
Milan on Tuesday and Camden on Friday. Both games were
district contests against quality opponents. The Lady
Rebels improved their district record to 4-2 with two
wins this week while the boys remained winless in the
district. This week the teams travel to Lexington on
Tuesday, play at home against Big Sandy on Friday, and
go to Riverside on Saturday. The girls can make strides
toward finishing in the upper echelon with district wins
against Lexington and Riverside. The boys have an
opportunity to win against any of the three. Crowd
support has been very good at the last few home games. I
am sure that our teams appreciate the attendance of so
many fans.
The band will send several members to compete for
positions in the All West UTM Honors Band. Competition
will be February 6-8 for the opportunity to be a part of
this prestigious group. Students have been busy
perfecting their skills to audition before a panel of
judges. Good luck to them as they represent our school.
Seniors and their parents are rehearsing for their
upcoming performance of the Great Pretenders. The
performers will dress and act the part of their favorite
singers or groups. This program has been a major
fundraiser for Project Graduation and provides the
community with some great entertainment. Seniors are
selling tickets for the performance which will be
Saturday, February 15, at 7:00 P.M. and Sunday, February
16, at 2:00 P.M. General admission seats are $5.00.
Reserved seats toward the front are $7:00. Tickets are
going fast. See a senior for more information or call
the school. |
