Snow played havoc with our basketball schedule last week
with two of our three games canceled because of the
weather conditions. The game scheduled last Thursday
against Huntingdon has been rescheduled for February 11.
The Saturday game against West Carroll has not been
rescheduled yet. The teams did play against Lexington
last Tuesday. The girls lost a heartbreaker by three
points after leading going into the last two minutes of
the game. Their district record dropped to 2-2 and their
overall record dipped to 7-6. The boys also lost to the
Lexington squad. Their district record now stands at 0-4
and their overall record sank to 2-10.This week the
teams play at home against Gleason on Tuesday and at
home against Clarksburg on Thursday in a make-up game.
On Friday, we return to district play when we travel to
Riverside to play the Lady Panthers and Panthers.
The inclement weather also canceled our much anticipated
participation in the Inaugural Parade of Governor Phil
Bredesen. Our band had already practiced with the other
county bands to form a combined band of Carroll County
with approximately 200 students participating.
Unfortunately, the snow canceled the last practice
session scheduled on Friday. Eventually, the Inaugural
Committee canceled the parade altogether. Tentative
plans were made earlier to explore the possibility of a
future joint effort for one of the spring parades -
either the Fish Fry Parade or the West Tennessee
Strawberry Festival Parade. The various band boosters of
the county, the band directors, and Brad Hurley and the
Chamber of Commerce had worked hard to pull together
this first time combined effort.
Before the holiday season, the school supervisors of
West Tennessee met at our building for a program
featuring Dr. Lee Hannel. Dr. Hannel specializes in
proper questioning technique to develop higher order
thinking skills for students. The area supervisors were
so impressed that they requested a full-day session with
Dr. Hannel as he presents his techniques and strategies
to area principals to see if they think this is worthy
of presentation to the teachers in an in-sevice in the
fall. I attended the session before the holiday break
and was impressed with Dr. Hannel and what his technique
might add to the repertoire of the classroom teacher.
Dr. Hannel will return to our school on January 28 to do
the presentation to the principals. We will use one of
classes as a lab to show how these techniques will
enhance critical thinking skills in students from the
lower functioning to the higher functioning students. We
are pleased to offer McKenzie High School as the center
of this special program.
Last Friday we held the 2002 Football Banquet to honor
our student-athletes. After a delicious banquet
organized by the Touchdown Club, the audience adjourned
to the Theater for the award's ceremony. Christie Plunk,
our cheerleader sponsor, praised the twelve members of
the cheerleading squad. She recounted the season and
gave each girl a T-shirt and a certificate honoring
their championship in the TSSAA Cheer Division in the
Non-Build Division. Their photograph will hang in our
Wall of Fame for those groups that have exemplary
seasons or performances. Head football coach Wade Comer
also recounted the season and lauded the team for their
second consecutive state playoff semifinal appearance.
This team will also adorn our Wall of Fame. For
football, Coach Comer, Coach Duncan, Coach Thomas, and
Coach Chappell recognized these individual award
winners: Best Offensive Back - Cody Cook, Best Offensive
Lineman - Brian Winston, Best Defensive Lineman - Jay
Taylor, Best Defensive Lineman/Linebacker - Daniel Beal
and Matt Jones, Most Improved Player - Ryan Drewry, Team
First - Matt Merrick, SUPRA Award - Kent Ozment and
Clint Anderson. Senior Ricky Mathis received the Mr.
Rebel Award as the team's most valuable player.
Permanent captains selected by the team were Ricky
Mathis, Matt Merrick, Jay Taylor, and Brian Winston.
Receiving senior academic awards for earning a GPA of
3.5 or higher for seven semesters were Ryan Drewry,
Steven Dickson, Matt Merrick, and Jay Taylor. Matt
earned the David Long Academic Award for having the
highest GPA of all the seniors. Senior Steven Dickson
received the Jeff Givens Sportsmanship Award for his
positive attitude as a team player. Junior John Craig
Howell was named the Kermit Holland 3-D Award for his
Determination, Dedication, and Discipline. Junior Brad
Campbell was the J.P. Carter Most Inspired Play Award
winner for his inspirational play during the season.
Each player received a T-shirt, sweat shirt, and letter
or plaque for their participation. The players and
coaches were given a scrapbook of the season compiled by
Sandra Johnson, an employee of our system and supporter
of MHS. The banquet and awards were proper send-offs for
our seniors and a memorable event for everyone present.
Last week seniors and their parents began their
preparation for their Great Pretenders Show scheduled
for February 15 and 16. They will have 5-6 practice
sessions in anticipation of raising money for Project
Graduation, the alcohol and drug-free party after
graduation. Please note upcoming flyers and news
releases advertising this fun-filled event for students
and the community.
Several dates that people have asked about are as
follows:
Prom - April 26
Baccalaureate - May 11
Graduation - May 16 |
