Last Wednesday our girls played in the Region 6-AA
Finals against the Lady Eagles of Chester County. Our
girls team had not played in a region final since the
new format of the state was begun in the 1970's. Despite
losing 56-26, the girls played hard but were unable to
find the range against one of the premier teams in the
state. Lady Rebel Renee Crawley, Julie Smith, and
Kristin Wiggins earned all-region honors for their
efforts against Humboldt, South Side, and Chester
County. The loss forced the team to travel on Saturday
night to Ashland City to play Cheatham County in
substate action.
The Lady Rebels proved to be deserving adversaries as
they battled the Lady Cubs to a 21-21 tie at the end of
the half. They played composed ball in front of a vocal
home crowd, but were victimized by cold shooting in the
third frame. Cheatham County, on the other hand, had a
hot touch in the second half. All told, they bombed
seven three-point shots out of nine to take a lead that
the Lady Rebels could not overcome. The Lady Rebels
ended a season in which the team progressed to the
substate game, the best season under the current format.
They will miss their five seniors -- Jennifer Johnson,
Jasmine McMackins, Julie Smith, Becky Toombs, and
Kristin Wiggins -- but they can look forward to several
returning underclassmen who gained valuable playing time
this year. Congratulations to Coach Ridley, Coach
Herrin, and the Lady Rebels for an outstanding
post-season.
A reminder to parents that report cards will be issued
on Wednesday, March 19. This week marks the end of the
nine-week period with our First and Third Block tests on
Tuesday and our Second and Fourth Block tests on
Wednesday. Students failing or doing poorly may ask for
Beta members to tutor them in Project Help. See Ms.
McKennie or Ms. Herrin for more information.
March 14 and 17 will be regular school days for
students. We will make-up those days because of our
excessive misses earlier this semester. We will also be
in session on April 17 and 24 and on May 2. All of these
were originally earmarked as holidays, but will now be
part of our instructional calendar.
The football team ended its spring training with two
scrimmages last week. On Tuesday, we traveled to Henry
County to play the Patriots. Our team defeated them by a
margin of 3-1. On Friday, the 2003 Rebels ended their
spring with a home stand against Haywood County. The
deficit of 3-2 was marked with a great deal of physical
play. Both of the teams that we scrimmaged are larger,
with Henry County competing at the 5-A level and Haywood
County at the 4-A level.
The band program and Band Boosters held three reviews
this weekend at the high school. The band had the Little
Miss and Mr. McKenzie Pageant on Friday and the Junior
Miss and Miss McKenzie Pageants on Sunday afternoon. The
Band Boosters had a pre-school event on Saturday
morning. Congratulations to the Miss McKenzie Royalty.
The royalty consists of the following: Brandy Burke,
fourth maid; Heather Flippin, third maid; Brittany
Lessenberry, second maid; Becky Toombs, first maid; and
Savanna Cooper, queen. These girls will represent us at
the Fish Fry and Strawberry Festival parades.
In baseball action this week, the Rebels will play
Greenfield at home on Thursday and at Milan at home on
Friday. These games will be the season openers for the
team. The softball season will begin its season on
Thursday with a home game against Waverly. Tennis and
track will begin their seasons next week.
The basketball banquet will be March 20 at 6:30 P.M. at
the high school. We will honor our players and
cheerleaders for their season. Tickets for the banquet
are $6.50 each. Parents should purchase their tickets
some time this week.
The last shipment of letter jackets will arrive this
Thursday from Johnsey's. Students that have balances to
be paid will find the amounts posted in the hallways.
All checks should be made payable to Johnsey's.
On Friday, Paul Edwards, John Craig Howell, Sydney
Patterson, and Heidi Thomas will attend the SCOPE
Conference at the downtown campus of Tennessee State
University at Nashville. Our students annually attend
SCOPE, an acronym for Student Congress on Policies in
Education. At SCOPE, students participate in discussion
and debate on educational issues that affect them. They
also conduct simulated school board meetings to learn
how school policy is formulated. The highlight of the
conferences is students meeting together to listen to
their peers debate issues and then vote the way that
they think policy should go. SCOPE is organized by the
Tennessee School Board Association and funded and
sponsored locally by the McKenzie Board of Education.
Several upcoming dates to keep in mind are as follows:
March 25 Honors Banquet @ 6:30 P.M.
March 27 Assembly -- MADD @ 1:30 P.M.
March 27 Public Hearing -- Highway 79 @ 5:00 - 7:00 P.M. |
