Report cards will be issued on Wednesday, March 19. All
students should bring their cards home from this first
9-week grading period. Now is the time to try to remedy
problems either by getting tutorial help or by
requesting a conference with a teacher. With
approximately nine weeks of school remaining, students
need to remain focused on their studies and on earning
credits in their classes. A reminder to senior parents
that seniors must satisfy their pathway requirements
(university or technical), must earn 28 credits, and
must pass a minimum of three credits this semester to
walk the line at graduation and receive a diploma in
May. Special education students must fulfill their
Individualized Education Plan to receive a special
education diploma. Any student receiving a regular
diploma must have passed the T-CAP Competency Test.
Those who complete coursework but fail the Competency
Test will receive a certificate of attendance. If
parents have questions, please call the office.
The softball team had its opening game at home against
the Waverly Lady Tigers, a perennial powerhouse from
Middle Tennessee. The young Lady Rebels lived up to the
high expectations that they have set for themselves with
an 8-1 victory. Sophomore Brittany Carpenter survived a
no-out, bases-loaded first inning to lead the team with
seven strong innings of pitching. She scattered three
hits and had the support of a five-run first inning to
coast to the win. This week the team travels to Obion
County on Tuesday, to Gleason on Wednesday, and to
Waverly for a tournament on Friday and Saturday. The
Lady Rebels are coached by Randy Thomas with assistance
from Bruce Herrin.
The McKenzie Rotary Club will host the 18th annual
Honors Banquet on Tuesday, March 25, at 6:30 P.M.
Students and faculty will enjoy a banquet provided by
the cafeteria staff and funded by the local Rotary Club.
At approximately 7:30 P.M. parents may join the students
in the Theatre for the awards and recognition part of
the evening. Mr. Rick Rosenjack, a 1977 graduate of
McKenzie High School, will address the group. Rick is
currently a senior vice president with Bell Helicopter
-- a Textron Company in the Commercial Helicopter
Business Unit. Following his speech, we will recognize
all students present who maintained the 92 or above
average for the two preceding semesters, the Presidents
Education Awards recipients, and the four-year honorees.
Others who assist in the Honors Banquet are our
partners-in-education the McKenzie Banner, Southern
Scientific, and Charter Communications. An addition this
year is the announcement of the $1000 Rotary Club
Scholarship. This new scholarship approved by the local
club will go to one of our students to advance his/her
education. The recipient will be named on the 25th of
March. Parents and guests are cordially invited to the
awards portion at 7:30 at the Theatre.
The basketball team will have its annual banquet on
Thursday, March 20, at 6:30 P.M. We will celebrate the
success of our cheerleaders, girls' team, and boys'
team. The cheerleaders won the State Championship -
Cheer Division, and both teams advanced to region
competition. The girls closed the year in a strong way
by defeating Humboldt and Southside to play in the
region finals and qualify for the substate. Parents will
need to purchase tickets for the banquet in the office
by Wednesday, March 19. Tickets are $6.50. We are
pleased to have McKenzie High School graduate and Voice
of the Rebels Tim McBride to serve as our master of
ceremonies. We will eat in the cafeteria and adjourn to
the Theatre for the awards and recognition of our
student-athletes.
The baseball team began its season successfully with a
home game against Union City. Despite the loss of seven
seniors from last year's squad, the Rebels showed that
they will be a force this spring with a 7-6 win.
Freshman Drew Hayes supplied the arm and the fire power
to propel the team to victory. In his first varsity
game, Drew picked up the win and also hit a three-run
round tripper to give the Rebels the win. On Friday, the
Rebels played at home against Milan in district action.
The Rebels showed offensive punch and defensive strength
in hammering out an 8-2 victory. The Rebels were led
offensively by senior Jay Taylor who tripled and homered
and by John French who was 2 for 3 including a double.
Senior Brian Winston pitched well and went the distance
for the victory. The Rebels are 2-0 and 1-0 in the
district.
The baseball team has a full slate this week playing at
home against Camden on Monday, at home against Westview
on Friday, and at Jackson on March 22-26 in the Sports
Plus Tournament. Coach Kee and Coach McCaleb have
scheduled a competitive schedule with several junior
varsity players and games.
The tennis teams will begin their spring play this week.
Their first match will be a home match against
Huntingdon on Thursday followed by another home match
against Milan on March 25. Members of the Lady Rebels
squad are Heather Bryant, Amanda Cunningham, Courtni
Esch, Jessica Maynard, and Rema Salemeh. Members of the
boys team are Marty Brown, Daniel Duncan, Kellett
Hochreiter, David King, and Alan Ninness. The teams are
coached by Dan Ridley. Home matches will be played at
City Park compliments of the City of McKenzie.
I have a correction to last week's article. We will not
be in session on April 18 and May 9. We will have school
on March 17, April 17, and April 25. Graduation is still
scheduled for May 16.
Last week several of our students attended the state
DECA competition at Nashville. Our DECA organization has
had many state winners and national qualifiers and this
year is no exception. Ryan Lacey and Jasmine McMackins
won the category of Hospitality Services Management.
Mark Anderson and Thomas Clark won the E-Commerce
Management category. All four students will now attend
the National Convention in Orlando, Florida, on April
25th - 30th. Mr. Scott Jewell serves as the DECA sponsor
here at McKenzie High School.
McKenzie High School sophomore Kimberly Gaskins has
received notification that she has been chosen to sing
the National Anthem at the TSSAA Boys Tournament in
Murfreesboro on Friday at 11:00. Kimberly applied
through the school and was selected from applications
across the state. Congratulations to her. |
