  Notes From the High School

By MHS Principal Terry Howell

Several months ago I sent a letter home by students explaining the release of student information under the No Child Left Behind Act. Schools routinely and legally release student directory information to the public, i.e., names, addresses, and telephone numbers. Parents do have the option of requesting that this type of student directory information not be disclosed without prior written consent. Additionally, schools receiving federal funds under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) must provide to military recruiters, upon request, secondary students' names, addresses, and telephone numbers. Again, parents may opt out of the release of this information through a written request. I make this information available to parents again. Parents are to be advised that we do not sell student lists nor provide anyone student lists unless that person or organization has a direct and unselfish relationship with the school and our students. We do supply public information for academic honor rolls, ballgame program information, or student scholarship lists to colleges and universities. Parents who are unsure of the scope and intent of this legislation may call me at school. I assure you that student directory information is not shared with those who have self-serving or financial gain motives.

Carroll County Arts recently sponsored the County Art Competition with several of our high school students competing. Chosen to display their work were Lucy Snead, Kyle Seavers, Elizabeth Johnsonius, Zack Drye, Jessica Carveiro, and Brittani Bright. These students had their work displayed at Carroll Bank and Trust in Huntingdon. The bank also hosted a reception for them and their parents last Friday. We appreciate Ms. Corbin, our art teacher, and the bank for encouraging the artistic ability of our students and for showing their talent in a public setting.

The basketball team and cheerleaders had their banquet for the 2002-03 season. Our student-athletes had a delicious meal in the cafeteria with the Rebounders Club funding meals for the teams and school personnel and special guests. Afterwards, everyone retired to the Theatre for the awards and recognition. Christie Plunk, the cheerleader sponsor, highlighted the squad's season and presented certificates to all twelve members. Senior members Emily Kee and Monica Mayberry also received a key chain, team-photo plaque, and commemorative basketball from the basketball season as did the boys and girls teams. Coach Larry Joe Smith and Coach Matt McCaleb recognized the varsity and freshmen respectively. Coach Smith offered encouragement for the future and praised the team for its effort throughout the season. Losing only one senior, he remarked the future looked bright for McKenzie Rebel basketball. Those players receiving individual honors were as follows: Daniel Duncan, The Rebound Award; Bryan Huffman, the Assist Award; John French, the Free Throw Shooting Award; Clint Anderson, the Coaches Award; John French, the Best Offense Award; Ryan Drewry, the Best Defense Award; Randy Lacey, the Newcomer of the Year Award; Daniel Duncan, the Most Improved Award. Coach Dan Ridley lauded the Lady Rebels for advancing to the substate and for representing McKenzie well, particularly in the last two-three weeks of the season. Although losing five seniors, the Lady Rebels return several players with game experience. Coach Ridley praised the seniors for raising the bar of expectation and for challenging future teams to reach this level. Coach Ridley presented these honors: Renee Crawley, the 6th Man Award; Hope Wyder, the Hustle Award; Julie Smith, the Best Defense Award; Jennifer Johnson, the Most Improved Player Award; Courtney Wiggins, the Newcomer Award; and Kristen Wiggins, the Most Valuable Player Award. Academic Awards went to Julie Smith and Ryan Drewry for have at least a 92 average and having the highest averages on their teams. Julie and Ryan also received the Andy Camp Sportsmanship Award from Mr. Richard Chappell on behalf of the Camp Family for displaying the qualities of character and sportsmanship beyond mere athletic competition. The girls basketball team will also have their team composite framed and mounted for our Wall of Fame in the 300 wing for those teams that qualify to an advanced level in the state playoffs. The night was an appropriate celebration of the basketball season.

Also, I announced at the banquet that Ms. Plunk had received notification that she is the West Tennessee nominee for the TSSAA Cheerleading Coach of the Year. Ms. Plunk has served in this capacity for six years at our school. She works hard to have a squad that is competitive and that represents our school well. Ms. Plunk will attend a banquet in her honor and the other two nominees on April 7 at 12:00 P.M. at the Opryland Hotel in Nashville. Congratulations to her and the great job that she does with our cheerleaders.

On Thursday, March 27, we will have an assembly program sponsored by MADD -- Mothers Against Drunk Driving. The assembly is a nationally shown program that features three large video screens for a multimedia presentation. The talk of this program is IRL -- In Real Life." IRL features recording artist Jaci Velasquez; Amanda Dunbar, a renowned teen artist who started painting at 13; third generation Olympic gold medallist Jerry Shea; and the story of Helen Marie Witty, a Miami student who was killed by another teenager that had been drinking and driving. The show features the latest DVD technology to project onto three giant screens totaling 15' x 45'.
Supported by Chevrolet, the national Presenting and Official Vehicle Sponsor, the high-energy, 38-minute show catches students' attention with an exciting blend of powerful energy and special effects, current music videos, poignant stories of real young people, celebrity interviews, and clips from major motion pictures. We are indebted to School Resource Officer Jackie Sykes for arranging the program. DARE role models will assist with the set-up of the equipment. With prom and graduation coming soon, this program is a timely reminder of the negative consequences of drinking and driving.

The Balfour representative will be at our school on April 1 to meet with sophomores about ordering class rings. He will meet with them during homeroom to discuss the options in rings and in payments for these rings. On Friday, April 4, he will return during lunch to take orders on rings during lunch. Students should have the order form completed and the down payment to Balfour on this date ready when they get to school for easy processing.

Balfour will also be here on April 2 to dispense graduation supplies. He will do this during the lunch period. Students will need to bring cash or a certified check or money order payable to Balfour at this time to pay off the balance.

The softball team played Obion County on Tuesday in their second game of the season. Sophomore Brittany Carpenter tossed a shut-out in the 9-0 victory on the road. Becky Toombs and Courtney Creasy had the hot bats going 3 for 4. This weekend the team played in a tournament at Waverly. Against some of the stiffest competition in the state, they managed to win one out of the five games that they played. This tournament is a good motivator for players to improve and to patch up shortcomings. This week the Lady Rebels were to play Dresden on Wednesday, at Camden on Thursday, and at Waverly on Friday and Saturday in another Tournament.

The baseball team had two games and a tournament this week. On Monday they defeated district rival Camden 11-7. Drew Hayes went the distance for the Rebels in picking up the win. He also went 4 for 4 at the plate. Brian Winston also provided offensive fire power with a double and homerun. On Friday, the Rebels defeated traditional powerhouse Martin Westview by a score of 10-8. Robert Jones pitched five innings followed by relief work from Matt Jones and Drew Hayes. Matt Jones picked up the win, and Drew earned a save. Drew Hayes provided the game-winning hit, a three-run homer that gave the home team the lead for good. Jones also homered for the Rebels. The Rebels improved to 4-0 overall, 2-0 in the district. On Saturday, the team began competing in the talent-laden Sports Plus Tournament. On Saturday, the team fell twice to powerful Northside and later to Trenton-Peabody. They continued their Sports Plus schedule on Monday and are scheduled to play at Westview on Thursday and at Lexington on Friday.
