On Wednesday, February 19, Charles and June Flippin
represented the VFW in a presentation of awards to ten
of our eighth grade students. These students had the top
ten essays in the annual contest sponsored by the Ladies
Auxiliary. Third place winner Alex Masullo received a
plaque and a one hundred dollar savings bond. A plaque
and a two hundred dollar savings bond were awarded to
Kendall Smith for placing second. Jonathan Brawner
received the first place prize of a plaque and a three
hundred dollar savings bond. The remainder of the top
ten each received a free movie rental. They were Laken
Comer, Samantha Doster, Heather Huffman, Meredith
McKinney, Lauren Morris, Kelsey Schweitzer, and Joe
Walker. We are proud of all our students that
participated. The theme for this year was “My Promise to
America.” The students do their writing under the
direction of Mrs. Catherine Argo. We appreciate the VFW
for providing our students with this opportunity.
Coach Brad Chappell is set to begin his first season as
the soccer coach. The team plays an eight-game schedule
that begins on March 27 at Union City. We have home
matches on April 3, 15, 22, and 29. Members of this
year’s team include Carson Rider, Chase Mitchell, Shane
Wheet, Cory Wilson, Kelsey Schweitzer, Britton McCann,
Shabree Payne, Chloe Cunningham, Parker Jones, Damon
Hardy, Kenny Carey, Chris Ventura, Michelle Walker,
James Tucker, Alex Massullo, Nate Massullo, Drew Brown,
Glenn Smith, Blake Clark and Jay McCann.
We had nine weeks tests in early February. The
reading and social studies were taken on February 5. The
following day students took their science and math exams
and language arts, physical education, music and
computer exams were on Friday. Report cards will go out
on Thursday, March 13.
Wednesday morning March 12 will be the date of the
annual Beta Club induction. We will begin at
approximately 8:05 a.m. and conclude around 8:45 a.m. We
extend an invitation to all of our parents to attend.
Beta Club sponsors are Jennifer Ognibene, Martha Sue
Peters, Sally Shymkiw, and Melody McClain. |

Mid-term exams will be given next week to assess
progress for the first nine weeks of school this
semester. On Tuesday, March 11, we will have our First
and Third Block exams. On Wednesday, March 12, we will
have our Second and Fourth Block exams. I encourage
parents to help students prepare for these important
tests. The tests count 25% of the total grade for the
nine-week grading period. Report cards will be issued on
March 19 of the following week.
This week the band will sponsor its two spring beauty
pageants for the 2002-03 school year. On Friday, March
7, we will have the Little Miss and Mr. McKenzie Beauty
Pageant at 7:00 P.M. in the Theatre. Entry forms may be
picked up at the elementary school. On Sunday, we will
have the Junior Miss McKenzie Pageant at 2:00 P.M. and
the Miss McKenzie Pageant at 3:00 P.M. in the Theatre.
Admission for these beauty pageants is $5.00 each night.
American Legion Boys State and Girls State delegates
have been chosen by the faculty recently. Those chosen
to attend Girls State were Kate Hames and Amber King.
Chosen to represent our school at Boys State were Andrew
Cross, John Craig Howell, Robert Jones, and Bryan
Huffman. These programs are designed to attract some of
the best students from across the state to learn about
citizenship, civic responsibility, and the governmental
process. Girls State is held at Middle Tennessee State
University; Boys State at Tennessee Tech at Cookville.
We appreciate the patronage of these businesses and
organizations -- the American Legion, Carroll Bank &
Trust, Lions Club, McKenzie Banking Company, Rotary
Club, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 4937. This
group pays the tuition costs for our students to attend
this week of learning and fun.
Invitations to our Honors Banquet were extended this
week to those students who applied for and met the
criteria necessary to attend the banquet. This year's
banquet is the eighteenth annual one. Students must have
a 92 or above average for the preceding semester and the
spring semester of 2002. The banquet and program are
sponsored by the McKenzie Rotary Club. This year 79
students will receive invitations for the recognition on
Tuesday, March 25. The banquet will begin at 6:30 P.M.
Parents are invited to attend the recognition of
students in the Theatre at 7:30 P.M. The Honors Banquet
Committee is busy getting ready for this appropriate
night for our students who excel academically.
Several of our spring sports will begin action next
week. The baseball team, coached by Josh Kee and Matt
McCaleb, open play on Monday, March 10, at home against
Greenfield at 4:30 P.M. at City Park. They play Union
City on Tuesday, March 11, at home. The tennis teams
travel to Milan on March 11 for their first match. The
team is coached by Dan Ridley. On Tuesday, March 11,
they open their home play against Bolivar. The softball
team will have a challenging opening game at home
against Waverly on March 13. I encourage everyone to
support these spring sports.
The girls basketball team defeated Humboldt by a score
of 58-54 in the first round of the Region 6-AA
Tournament at Lexington. The Lady Rebels played well in
upsetting the number two seed in the tournament. They
were led by Kristen Wiggins with 17 points and Renee
Crawley with 13 points. Julie Smith played an excellent
floor game to contribute to the win. They played Jackson
South Side in the semi-finals on Monday and won by a
score of 36-30. The victory earned the Lady Rebels the
privilege of playing in substate action on Saturday.
First, the Lady Rebels play Chester County for the 6AA
championship on Wednesday at Lexington. The Rebels
played the top-seeded team in the tournament on
Saturday, the Bolivar Tigers. Bolivar quickly showed why
it is a top-five team in the state as they raced out to
an early lead. They extended the lead to 42-14 by
halftime and coasted to a 71-38 victory. The defeat
ended the young Rebels season at 6-18. With a lone
senior, the Rebels hope to rebound and be more
competitive next year.
The football team will end its spring practice this
Friday with a home scrimmage against Haywood County. The
Rebels were to have played Henry County on Tuesday
earlier in the week. Coach Comer and his staff have
worked hard on the weight program and with several
returning lettermen hope to again be competitive in
Region 6-AA.
Parents of seniors are to be reminded that Ms. Herrin
has announced over 30 scholarship opportunities for
those who make application. Of particular interest
locally are the McKenzie High School Scholarship and the
Red and Gray Scholarship which are funded by anonymous
benefactors of our school. Also, the McKenzie Rotary
Club has begun its own scholarship for our students.
Each of these non-renewable scholarships is for $1000.
See Ms. Herrin for more information. |
