  Notes From the High School

By MHS Principal Terry Howell

Students in Ms. Corbin's art classes and Mr. Jewell's marketing classes recently competed in the Design-an-Ad Contest sponsored by the Jackson Sun. Students created ads for the competition and submitted them to the Jackson Sun for judging. Winners from our school were Zachary Drye and Ashley Lyons. Zach and Ashley had their ads displayed in a special section of the Jackson Sun on Tuesday, October 28. Congratulations to them for their contest-winning ads.

The Balfour representative met with senior officers and the senior class on Wednesday, October 29 to discuss graduation materials and designs. The officers chose three graduation invitations for the class to select the final choice. The senior class met with the representative later to receive an order form and explanation on selecting graduation materials, caps and gowns, and diplomas and diploma covers. Parents should examine the order form to validate what students are ordering. On Tuesday, November 4, the representative will return to accept orders. A $60.00 deposit payable to Balfour is expected at this time. The only necessary supplies for graduation are caps and gowns and diplomas and diploma covers. If students order less than the $60.00 deposit, they will only pay up to that amount. Please share in this exciting time with your child by checking the order form to see all that your family needs is ordered.

Our 9-week honor rolls were posted this past week for students who performed commendably during the past grading period. Twenty-seven (27) students earned a place on the High Honor Roll for those students who have grades of 95 or above in each class. Thirty-two (32) students achieved notice on the Honor Roll for students having no grade below 89 and an A average. Eighty-five (85) students deserved a place on the Merit Roll for students having no grade below 85 and a B average. Approximately thirty-nine (39) percent of our students made one of the three academic rolls. On the other side of the ledger, we had ninety-five (95) students who made one or more F's on their report cards. This represents about 26% of the student body. The largest percentage of those F's came from freshmen who have traditionally begun their high school academic careers poorly. Teachers have called or mailed parents as to academic progress, and the school issued report cards on October 16 so parents should be aware of their child's academic progress. On November 13, we will issue progress reports for all classes for the 131/2 week mark (3/4 of the term) for this semester. We will administer semester tests to end the term before the Christmas break. Parents seeking conferences should call the school to meet with teachers during their planning block.

On Tuesday, November 11, we will have our annual Veterans Day Program at 10:00 A.M. at the high school gym. We invite all veterans to attend as our special guests for the program and the meal afterward. The McKenzie National Guard will post the colors to begin the annual program. Students will perform roles in the program ranging from singing to speaking to playing in the band. Our speaker this year will be Mayor Walter Winchester. Highlighting the program will be the Veterans Memorial Service which will be presented by V.F.W. Post 4939. Also, all veterans in attendance will be recognized and presented to the audience. The Veterans Day Program is one of the main programs of our school. We celebrate those veterans in attendance and remember those veterans who paid the ultimate price for our freedom. The public is invited to attend. All veterans are encouraged to arrive at 9:30 and register in the back lobby for the program.

Our basketball teams began preparation for the 2003-04 season last week. The girls return several experienced players from last year's substate team. The boys are handicapped by the absence of several players that also compete on the football team. The girls began scrimmaging this past Monday against Bradford. Both teams anticipate the Huntingdon Jamboree on November 22 and the opening game of the season scheduled for November 25.

This year we plan to sell season tickets to our basketball fans. The cost of a single season ticket is $33.00 for a savings of $11.00. A family of two may purchase two passes for $66.00 for a savings of $22.00. A family of three can get three passes for $88.00 and save $44.00. A family of four or more can spend $100.00 and save at least $76.00. We will begin selling these at the high school office next week and do this through November. The cards will have names placed on them, making the cards non-transferable. The pass will allow admission to all varsity, B-team, or freshmen games. Middle school games do not apply. I encourage everyone to take advantage of this opportunity.

On Tuesday, November 11, Ms. Herrin will sponsor a College Information Night at 7:00 P.M. in the Theater. Ms. Herrin will have a Power Point presentation which will feature such topics as ACT, financial aid, the college application process, and other areas of interest to those students who will attend college. Parents and students should attend this workshop. I suggest juniors and seniors and their parents are the primary audience of this program.

The football team closed out its regular season against cross-county rival Huntingdon. The Mustangs proved that they are a premier team as they upended the Rebels by a score of 42-7. The visitors used their superior speed to explode for quick points and ended the Rebels hope for a victory by scoring 28 first half points. The second half saw the Rebels play their opponents more evenly, but the damage had already been done. The Rebels finished as runners-up in 6-AA and will host its First Round game against Cheatham County, the third place team in Region 5-AA.

On Friday night the football team will host Cheatham County in the First Round of the State Playoffs. Cheatham County comes into the game with a record of 8-2 while the Rebels are also 8-2. This First Round game will begin at 7:00 P.M. at Rebel Stadium. Gates will open at 5:00. Since this is a TSSAA playoff game, everyone will have to pay $7.00 to see the contest. Sports passes and season tickets are not accepted for this game. The playoffs are truly the second season for those teams that qualify. Each game is a do-or-die situation with the loser ending their season. I encourage Rebel fans to support these young men who represent our school.
