The guidance office is offering the pre-ACT this
Saturday, November 15, at 8:30 A.M. This test, call the
PLAN test, is an excellent way for students to measure
what they have learned in school so far and to get some
ideas about career choices and pathways. The cost of the
test is $8.50 payable to McKenzie High School. The
school has 30 slots available on a first come, first
served basis. The test predicts the score a student will
make on the actual ACT which students generally take
during the spring semester of their junior year.
Sophomores that are in the university pathway are
usually earmarked to take this important exam. Parents
may call the office if they have questions.
On Monday, we sent out through all three buildings
information about the basketball season passes. We are
now selling season passes at the high school office for
the following amounts: Season Ticket (1) - $33.00,
$11.00 saving; Family of Two (2) - $66.00, $22.00
savings; Family of Three (3) - $88.00, $44.00 savings;
and Family of Four (4) - $100.00, $76.00 savings. These
non-transferable tickets may be used at all McKenzie
High School varsity, B-team, or freshmen games. Each
package has a built in savings plus holders will not
have to worry about getting money to attend games on
game night. We will offer the opportunity to buy these
season passes through the first of December. Our first
home game is December 8. Also, at the school, we have a
schedule provided by Farm Bureau. This service has been
provided for years by Glynn Mebane and Farm Bureau. The
high school appreciates their continued support.
This Thursday we will issue progress reports to students
in all of our academic classes. This week marks the
131/2 week of this term which means that the semester is
three-fourths of the way completed. I encourage all
parents to look for these progress reports to see how
their child is performing. With semester exams and
Gateway tests rapidly approaching, students must prepare
for a strong finish to this semester. On our 4x4 block
schedule, we will end these four classes and offer new
classes after Christmas break.
On Tuesday, November 18, Project Graduation will meet in
the Theater at 6:00 P.M. This organization which offers
a safe and drug-free environment on graduation night has
several fundraisers and organizational plans for this
meeting. Seniors and their parents should attend each of
these important meetings.
On Saturday, November 22, our cheerleaders will compete
in the Division I Cheerleading Competition at Middle
Tennessee State University. They are the defending state
champions in the Cheer Division, Non-Building Category.
Cheerleaders for the 2003-04 school year are seniors
Savanna Cooper, Amanda Rogers, and Carrie Stambaugh;
juniors Brandi Burke, Rachael Clark, and Heidi Thomas;
sophomore Callan Hayes and Whitney Hopper; and freshmen
Wendy Brown, Heather Huffman, Anna Smith, and Jenna
Smith. Good luck to them as they represent our school.
Members of Richard Chappell's American history and
contemporary issues classes and Ms. Elam's English IV
class visited the McKenzie National Guard to see career
opportunities, educational programs, and technical
training provided by the National Guard. The local unit
did an outstanding job in educating and entertaining
students about the many opportunities of the National
Guard. Students had the chance to speak with Guard
members close to their age to get a young person's
perspective of the Guard. We are indebted to Sergeant
David Jarrett and all the Guardsmen who made this event
possible.
On Friday, the Rebel football team entertained the Cubs
of Cheatham County. After the disappointing loss the
previous week to cross-county foe Huntingdon, many
supporters were leery about how the Rebels would
perform. Cheatham County took the opening kick-off and
marched down the field, but failed to capitalize losing
a fumble in the end zone. The Rebels soon countered with
a march of their own resulting in a touchdown and two
point conversion. The Cubs showed their fire power and
pulled to within one after a touchdown and extra point.
The Rebels tacked on two scores before halftime, but
Cheatham County had a late tally to make the score
21-14. The Rebels defense, which was porous the first
half, proved to be quite stringy in the second frame and
shut out the visitors. The offense continued to click
and put two more touchdowns on the board for the final
margin of 35-14 and putting the Rebels in Round Two of
the playoffs. This week the Rebels travel to Hohenwald
to play Lewis County, the third ranked team in the
state. The Panthers will seek revenge as the Rebels have
eliminated them from the playoffs for the past two
years. Game time will be at 7:00 P.M. We will not have
advanced tickets for this contest. Considering the
importance of last week's game, we had a small crowd at
home. This week the stakes are higher. Rebel fans should
plan to make the trip to Middle Tennessee to support
these young athletes.
We do have several important upcoming dates. Our juniors
will take the ASVAB test on Tuesday, November 25, in the
Theater. This aptitude test exams the abilities and
interests of our students. Although it is administered
by the military, it has great value for all of our
students. A second important date is that of our
Thanksgiving holiday which be November 26-28. School
will not be in session on those dates. |
