The football team ended its season last Friday at Lewis
County losing 24-7 to the third-ranked team in the
state. The Rebels came out firing and scored the game's
initial touchdown with a first quarter pass from Drew
Hayes to Daniel Duncan to take a 7-0 lead. From that
point, the Rebels seemed to go into a tailspin with
turnovers, penalties, and mental mistakes that either
killed their own drives or aided the host team in
theirs.
Trailing 13-7 at halftime, the Rebels took the
opening kickoff of the third quarter but failed on a
fourth down attempt deep in its own territory. The
Panthers took advantage and scored a decisive touchdown
and two-point conversion. A field goal in the fourth
quarter made the lead a three-possession margin and
defeat was imminent. The Rebels finished the season at
9-3. This year's seniors had the most victories as a
4-year class in school history with 42 wins. Seniors
playing their last game in the Red and Gray were Stephen
Brown, Brad Campbell, Andrew Cross, Daniel Duncan,
Daniel Hollowell, John Craig Howell, Clint Manns, Kent
Ozment, Jake Smith, Kris Sydnor, and manager Justin
Taylor. The players and coaches appreciate the support
of the community. This made the season that much more
memorable.
The cheerleaders will travel to Murfreesboro this
Saturday to compete in the State Cheerleader Competition
at MTSU. The squad will try to defend its state title in
the Cheer Division, Non-Building Category. This year's
squad has seniors Savanna Cooper, Amanda Rogers, and
Carrie Stambaugh; juniors Brandi Burke, Rachael Clark,
and Heidi Thomas; sophomores Callan Hayes and Whitney
Hopper, and freshmen Wendy Brown, Heather Huffman, Anna
Smith, and Jenna Smith. The girls will compete at 1:30
P.M. at MTSU. Good luck to them in their quest to
repeat.
Basketball season is rapidly approaching for the 2003-04
season. The girls and boys team will play in the
Huntingdon Jamboree on Saturday, November 22. They will
play at 5:30 and 6:15 against Trinity Christian Academy.
The regular season will open on Tuesday, November 25, at
Clarksburg. The girls hope to build on their strong
finish from last year when they advanced to the substate
level before falling to Cheatham County. The boys ended
their season third in the district, losing in the first
round of the regional tournament. With several returning
lettermen, they too look to improve. As I have mentioned
previously, we are selling advanced season passes to the
basketball games. Please come by the office or call for
more information. In many cases, a family can have a
significant savings by purchasing a season's pass.
Our juniors will take the ASVAB on Tuesday, November 25.
This aptitude test administered by the military provides
our students and guidance counselor some excellent
information about aptitude, career planning, and
educational training. The military does an excellent job
in giving the test but also in providing feedback to
students. The test has no cost attached to it.
Ms. Jennifer Yates, our government teacher, will have
Representative Chris Crider speak to her classes on
Tuesday, December 2. Representative Crider will address
the operation of state and local governments
specifically and relate first-hand how bills are
prepared and passed. This type of activity allows
students to learn concretely how government operates. I
appreciate Ms. Yates' initiative in getting
Representative Crider to address these government
classes.
Also, on Tuesday, December 2, we have invited the Rotary
Club to have lunch at the high school. This has become a
yearly outing for the club. We have had a number of
programs in conjunction with their meal. This year the
Little Rebel Singers from McKenzie Elementary School
will perform.
Upcoming dates of importance to many of our students are
December 9-11. On these days we will administer the
state-mandated Gateway tests. On December 9, students in
Algebra I will take the Math Gateway. On December 10,
English II students will take the English Gateway. On
December 11, students in Biology I and biology for
technology will take the Science Gateway. Not only will
these tests determine graduation status, but also they
will count 15% of the second nine-week grade for those
students. Parents should stress the importance of these
pivotal, state-mandated exams.
Next week after Thanksgiving break we will have three
weeks of school remaining. These three weeks are
critical for many of our students to determine if they
will pass or fail. On Thursday, December 18, we will
take our First Block and Third Block tests. On Friday,
December 19, we will take our Second Block and Fourth
Block tests.
School will not be in session on November 26, 27, and
28. We will observe the Thanksgiving Holiday. School
will resume on Monday, December 1. |
