The General Assembly of the State of Tennessee has
again funded the various Tennessee Governor's Schools
for accelerated students after several years of
inactivity. This program for accelerated students is
offered to rising juniors and seniors for the summer of
2004. Each Governor's school has its own criteria, but
all students must be in good academic standing; must not
have attended any of the other Governor's Schools; come
recommended by teacher(s); and exhibit high motivation,
a high level of accomplishment in school in a given
area, and show enough maturity to participate
effectively in a four-week program of intensive study.
The Governor's Schools are as follows: the School for
the Arts at Middle Tennessee State University, the
School for Science at U.T. Knoxville, the School for the
Humanities at U.T. Martin, the School for International
Studies at the University of Memphis, the School for
Tennessee Heritage at East Tennessee State University,
the School for Prospective Teachers at U.T. Chattanooga,
the School for Manufacturing at U.T. Knoxville, the
School for Agriculture Science - TBA, and the
President's School for Information Technology Leadership
at Tennessee Technological University at Cookeville.
Students need to see Ms. Herrin for applications.
Deadline to apply is December 19, 2003.
The golf team finished 2nd in the District Tournament at
Carroll Lake Golf Course last Monday. They trailed
Lexington by 20 strokes, but defeated the other three
teams in the district to qualify for the Regional
Tournament on Monday, October 6. The McKenzie linksters
that played scored as follows: Craig Broadbent, Marshall
Smith, and Justin Wilson all fired 83's while Beau Brown
and John French had 88's. The Regional Tournament for
A-AA will be played at Falcon Ridge outside of
Lexington. The top team and the top three individual
scorers will advance to state. On Tuesday, October 7,
Tish Brown and Kristi Petering will compete in the
Regional Tournament for girls. Good luck to our Rebel
and Lady Rebel teams.
The cross country team ran in the JCM Invitational at
the U. T. Agricultural Center in Jackson on Monday,
September 29. Amber King and Sarah Hartz paced the
girls' team with times of 23:40 and 23:55 respectively.
Their scores were good for 16th and 20th place. Katya
Kesterson and Caitlin Blackwell continued to improve
with a 71st place finish (29:13) and 75th place (30:29).
For the boys Chance Hudgins and Caleb Owen ran sub-20
times with 19:13 and 19:17. They finished in the
mid-thirtieth places. Other runners breaking the
25-minute barrier were Matt Blaylock, Brice Priestley,
Chace Mitchell, Holland Hames, James Lee, and Zach Drye.
Their next meet will be Wednesday, October 8, at
Wynridge Golf Course for the Obion County Invitational.
A reminder to all parents that we will have our
nine-week (midterm) exams next week. As I mentioned last
week, the exam schedule is as follows: First and Third
Block - October 9 and Second and Fourth Block - October
10. We will issue report cards on October 16. The
nine-week exams count 25% of a student's overall average
for the period. I encourage parents to assist students
in preparation for the exams.
DECA students will attend a fall leadership training
session in Memphis on Tuesday, October 7, at the
University of Memphis. The theme of the session is
Tennessee DECA: Tune in to Success. Ten Students will
attend the conference. Sponsors Jackie Carr and Scott
Jewell will accompany the students as they meet with
other DECA students across West Tennessee. DECA is an
organization that is devoted to developing marketing,
entrepreneurial, and business skills of students who
choose this particular strain of the technical pathway.
Our DECA organization has competed favorably at the
regional, state, and national level. This leadership
session is the first stage in preparing students for
future competition.
Senior night will be this Friday, October 10, at Rebel
Stadium. We will recognize the seniors in our band,
cheerleading, and football programs. Those students have
devoted countless hours to their passion. I encourage
all fans of each of these activities to be at Rebel
Stadium at 7:00 P.m. to celebrate the accomplishments of
these young men and women. Senior band members include
Amanda Allen, Kayla Bomar, Rebekah Cooper, Jassica
Gilbert, Kate Hames, Christy Lowe, Roger Morris, Tiffany
Steele, Daniel Walker, Brittany Washburn, Heather Weirs,
and Renee Wilson. Our senior cheerleaders are Savanna
Cooper, Amanda Rogers, and Carrie Stambaugh. The senior
football team has these participants: Stephen Brown,
Brad Campbell, Andrew Cross, Daniel Duncan, Daniel
Hollowell, John Craig Howell, Clint Manns, Kent Ozment,
Jake Smith, Kris Sydnor and Justin Taylor.
The football team played a key region game last Friday
against the always tough Riverside Panthers. The Rebels
were seeking to avenge a 7-6 loss last year that cost
them a first-round, home play-off game. The Rebels found
the going tough against the Panthers in the first half
but did manage two second quarter touchdowns to lead
14-0 at halftime. With 28 third quarter points, the
Rebels put the game out of reach by a 42-6 margin. The
defense played a "bend but don't break" style and
allowed only a single touchdown. They also had a
goal-line stand, keeping the Panthers out of the end
zone from a foot away. The offense again blended the
running of Cody Cook and Brad Campbell with the passing
of Drew Hayes and his stable of receivers to keep the
Panthers off balance. This Friday the Rebels host the
Dresden Lions in a game of undefeated powerhouses. This
game will be a crucial test for the Rebels as they
prepare for the home stretch of games. Rebel fans should
get to the game early to support our team as they
represent our school and community.
The Rebel Marching Band competed against four Class C
bands in the JCM Marching Invitational on Saturday. They
won the 2nd place trophy, missing 1st place by .7 of a
point. We are proud of the band for their good
representation of our school.
School will not be in session on Monday, October 13. We
will have a fall break day. |

that one fourth of the year has passed. Language arts
and social studies tests will be given on Wednesday.

given on Friday, October 10.
Basketball season is just around the corner. Our
