Notes From the High School |

On Friday, September 19, we had a meeting at the high
school for students and their parents who had an
interest in beginning a soccer program this spring. We
had earlier met with our girls in August about a girls'
soccer program for the fall, but had a poor reception
with only six girls showing up. The reception this time
was much better with approximately 30 students attending
the exploratory meeting. Because our girls' team did not
make, the TSSAA will allow us to field a co-ed team in
the spring. In fact, five of the signees were females.
Mr. Ward and I will begin the process of determining
where we will practice and play, who to choose to coach
the team (it will be an on-staff person), what equipment
and materials to purchase, and other administrative
concerns. We will hold soccer try-outs in February to
get the 20 best players available to compete and
represent our school. As always, we want to be as
competitive as possible even though this is a first-year
program.
McKenzie High School is currently offering students two
programs to assist them with standardized tests. On
selected days of the week, we are offering ACT-prep
classes at 7:00 A.M. for all seniors taking the October
assessment. With the lottery money tied in with ACT
results, this class offers a great opportunity for
students to better their scores and earn some
significant money for college expenses. We have
purchased ACT videos and software for the areas being
tested. Students can also buy ACT workbooks for their
private use for $10.00. Attendance has become somewhat
sporadic, but students and parents must realize that
these prep sessions may improve scores by three (3) to
five (5) points. This early class is a small sacrifice
for a high-stakes test.
The other offering is for review of the Competency Test
to be given in October. We currently have eight (8)
seniors that must take and pass this state-mandated test
to receive a regular high school diploma. The two parts
of the test are language and math, both of which require
a score of 70 to pass. We have software available for
the review and each teacher has this loaded on their
computers in their classrooms. I have instructed
teachers to allow their students to study for the exam
any time that they have completed their work. We also
have arranged a Competency Test review session after
school on announced days from 3:15 to 4:15 for these
eight students. It is critical for these students to
pass this test to receive the regular diploma. The test
will only be offered again in February prior to
graduation. The final administration will be in June.
After that, students will have to pass the Gateway
equivalent - which is much harder. I ask parents to
encourage students to attend these after-school sessions
and prepare for the test during available class-time.
The golf teams traveled to Falcon Ridge for a 4-way
match with Camden, Riverside, and Lexington. The girls
defeated Lexington and Camden, but lost by two stokes to
Riverside. Tish Brown shot a 59 to lead the Lady Rebels.
The boys' team defeated Camden and Riverside, but lost
to Lexington. Medalist for the Rebels was Jake Brown
with a 38.
The golf teams played their final match of the season on
Tuesday at the Carroll Lake Golf Course against
Clarksburg and Huntingdon. The girls lost to Huntingdon
by one stroke. Megan Cox and Courtney Creasy shot 54 and
56 respectively to lead the Lady Rebels. They end the
season with a 5-8-1 record. The good news is that all
players are returning next year so that they have a
bright future if they work at their game during the
off-season. The Rebel golf team beat both Clarksburg and
Huntingdon. Leading the Rebels was John French with a
38. The boys finished the regular season at 20-3. On
September 29, the boys competed in the district golf
tournament at Carroll Lake Golf Course. Craig Broadbent,
Beau Brown, John French, Marshall Smith, and Justin
Wilson represented the Rebels. The top three teams in
the district and the top five individual scorers will
advance to the regional tournament.
On Monday, October 6, we will have retakes of our school
day pictures. We will again use the pre-pay method for
those who choose to purchase. All students who did not
get their pictures taken in September in grades 9-11
will have their pictures taken at the retake. Again, the
purchase is optional. We will pass out envelopes this
week.
Last week the band competed in the Milan Invitational
Marching Contest. Field Commander Kayla Bomar won a 3rd
place trophy overall and the percussion won 2nd place
overall. This past Saturday the band competed in the
Middle-West Tennessee Marching Invitational held at
Waverly High School with these results: Class A (six
bands competed) the MHS band won 2nd place, guard placed
1st, percussion placed 1st and the field commander also
won 1st place. The Overall Division I included both
Class A and Class AA bands with 9 units competing for
the awards. The MHS guard, percussion and field
commander all won 1st place.
The cross country team ran in the JCM Invitational meet
on Monday. As of this submission to the paper, the
results are unavailable. Their next meet is October 8 at
the Obion County Invitational at Troy. They are gearing
down for the close of the season which will feature the
Best of the West.
The football team remained undefeated after a convincing
35-7 defeat of Trenton Peabody. The Rebel offense
clicked early and often as the team racked up 35
first-half points to put the game out of reach early.
The defense also dominated the first half by repeatedly
repelling the Peabody attack. The second half proved to
be somewhat lackadaisical as the Rebels turned the ball
over at key points. The Rebel offense again amassed big
numbers with approximately 400 yards of offense while
the defense held the Golden Tide to less than 200 yards
offense. Special teams also played much better -
especially the kick-off teams - to assist in the
victory. This week the Rebels again are on the road.
Their opponent is region rival Parsons-Riverside in a
game that can decide a play-off berth. Kick-off is 7:30
P.M. Come out and support the Rebels as they try to
remain undefeated. |
