The cross country teams ended their season last Thursday
at the Regional Track Meet at Dyer County High School.
Seniors Amber King and Sarah Hartz paced the girls by
finishing 14th and 15th in the girls' race. Runners
placing in the top ten qualified for a state berth
position. Freshmen Katya Kesterson, Caitlin Blackwell,
and Samantha Doster also competed and showed improvement
throughout the season promising even better results in
years to come. The boys' team had Caleb Owen (32nd) and
Matt Blaylock (43rd) as its best performers. Again, the
youthfulness of the team bodes well for the future.
Coach Christina French led the teams in her initial year
as the cross country coach. Students worked hard after
school to represent McKenzie High School across West
Tennessee.
The McKenzie Band Boosters will feature a night with
Elvis on Saturday, November 1, at 7:00 P.M. at the
Theater. The public may buy tickets from any band
students or call the school to get information on
obtaining a ticket. The revue features 1984 McKenzie
High School graduate David Taylor as the King of Rock
and Roll. David has performed this role throughout the
Southeast. He did an outstanding show at the Carroll
County Civic Center a few months ago. For $5.00, the
public can enjoy good clean, wholesome entertainment
with a quality performance. Proceeds will go toward the
Florida trip that the band will make in the spring.
Project Graduation will meet on Monday, November 3, in
the Theater at 6:00 P.M. Plans are to discuss
fundraisers and projects and to collect money from the
cookie dough drive that is underway. Seniors and their
parents plan to raise money for their "first reunion" as
alumni of McKenzie High School in a safe
drug-and-alcohol free environment.
Our seniors were scheduled to attend the West Tennessee
Regional College Fair at UTM on Tuesday, October 28. The
$10.00 fee went toward transportation and lunch and the
opportunity to meet with representatives from many area
and out-of-area colleges, universities,
vocational/technical schools, military branches, and
private businesses. Students may ask questions, get
applications, and familiarize themselves with the
representatives there. Students will also attend a
round-table discussion with several recent MHS graduates
who will speak candidly about college life and their
experiences thus far.
This week the Rebels return home to play for the Region
6-AA Championship against the Huntingdon Mustangs. The
season finale to the regular season features two teams
with identical 8-1 records overall and 4-0 in the
region. Gates will not open until 5:00 P.M. for the
game. We will sell advanced tickets to the game
beginning Thursday. We do expect a large crowd to
support their favorite teams in this fierce rivalry.
Huntingdon holds a tremendous edge in win-loss and again
sports an outstanding team. Game time is 7:30 at Rebel
Stadium.
Last Friday, the Rebels played Martin Westview in
non-region action. The Chargers' 1-7 record failed to
indicate the quality of their opponents or the quality
of this young team. The Rebels raced out to a 14-6 lead,
but watched as the Chargers stormed back to take an
18-14 halftime lead. The third quarter did not add much
for the Rebels as Westview scored again to increase
their lead to 26-14. In the fourth quarter the Rebel
offense began to click and reeled off three consecutive
touchdowns seemingly to put the game out of reach. The
never-say-die home team, however, again countered with a
touchdown to make the score 36-32 with two minutes left
in the game. The Rebels recovered the on-side kick and
ran out the clock.
One activity that our football team has done for the
past 3-4 years is to attend church services together as
a team. We have visited many of the local congregations
and have enjoyed the hospitality of their clergy and
church members. This year we decided to attend church
services every other week as opposed to every week so
that team members would not be away from their home
church so often. This year we have worshiped with
Greater Enon Baptist Church, Long Heights Baptist
Church, the First Cumberland Presbyterian Church, and
the McKenzie Church of Christ. With our team,
participation is optional and voluntary. We have
averaged around 25 team members every Sunday. We look at
this as a learning experience - good for team unity and
moral development.
This Thursday our ten Voice of Democracy Finalists will
tape their prepared scripts for competition. Mallory
Brandon, Hunter Downing, Mary Holland, Bryan Huffman,
Elizabeth Johnsonius, John Kermit Laughrey, Caleb Owen,
Brooke Ridley, Nicole West, and Jonathan Wood have
addressed the theme - My Commitment to America's Future
- in a 3-5 minute manuscript speech. We are fortunate to
have McKenzie native Argel Reynolds as our recording
supervisor. Mr. Reynolds has a professional studio and
has long supported the Voice of Democracy contest. The
local winner will have his/her script submitted to the
district level competition. From there, the winner is
placed in state competition. We are indebted to Michelle
Tucker and Tom Nolen for assisting in this annual
competition.
The band represented our school and the community well
at the Division I State Championship in Murfreesboro
last Saturday. Nineteen bands competed in this year's
Championship. In the competition format, eight of those
bands are called back for the finals with an opportunity
to perform again for the Championship. For the first
time in three years, the band made the final round. They
rated a 1 in the preliminary ratings of field commander,
guard, percussion, and band performance. In the final
round, the McKenzie musicians had a score of 86.2, good
for 5th place in the State Championship. This wonderful
conclusion to the competitive season reflects the many
hours of hard work and the dedication of those band
members. Their work is complemented by an equal
commitment to excellence of the Band Boosters. We
appreciate them and the direction of Keith Breeden. They
have made our school and community proud with their
performance. |
