SCHOOL NEWS FOR WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 10, 2003

  Notes From the High School

By MHS Principal Terry Howell

The golf team played a limited schedule last week because of the rain and 4-day week. On Thursday, the team traveled to Milan to battle the Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs. Kristi Petering and Tish Brown shot improved scores of 55 and 56 respectively.

The team lost to Milan by 13 strokes 111-98 in a battle of combined twosomes. The boys' record fell to 10-2 with a narrow loss to the host Bulldogs. Senior John French led all golfers as medalist with a strong 38 on a difficult course. John was followed by teammates Carson Rider (42), Craig Broadbent (42), and Marshall Smith (43). The final score of 165-164 is indicative of the balance between the two teams. This week the team plays Clarksburg and Obion County at Carroll Lake in a three-school match on Thursday. On September 15, they travel to Diamond Oaks in Gibson County in a head-to-head battle.

On Wednesday, the Balfour representative will deliver class rings to students who ordered last spring. Balances are posted in the major hallways so that students can make preparation to pay the ring supplier. Method of payment will be cash or money order made payable to Balfour; no personal checks will be accepted. Balfour will stand behind its product and correct any problem associated with the rings ordered.

I cannot stress enough the Parent-Teacher Conference scheduled for Thursday, September 11, from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. This week is the end of the first 41/2 weeks of school - approximately a quarter of the term. On our 4 x 4 Block Schedule, it is a fairly long time, and students should be making adequate progress in the semester at this point. All teachers in the academic classes will have progress reports to inform parents how students are doing. I encourage all parents to attend this critically important conference.

Last week students selected class favorites and Senior Superlatives from nominations by their homerooms. Chosen as Freshmen Class Favorites were Jenna Smith and Blake Milam. Sophomore Class Favorites were Courtney Wiggins and Drew Hayes. Julie Bennett and Mark Ghyers were recognized as Junior Class Favorites. Representing the seniors as Class Favorites were Heather Flippin and Bryan Huffman. Selected as Senior Superlatives by their peers were Kate Hames and Andrew Cross, Most Likely to Succeed; Jessica Johnson and David King, Best Looking; Hope Wyder and Clint Manns, Best Dressed; Kate Hames and Andrew Cross, Most Intelligent; Tasha Rainey and Daniel Hollowell, Cutest; Carrie Stambaugh and Bryan Huffman, Best All Around; Savanna Cooper and Ty Winkler, Friendliest; Carrie Stambaugh and Jonathan Wood, Best Personality; Sarah Hartz and John Craig Howell, Most Athletic; Sydney Patterson and Kris Sydnor, Class Clown; Savanna Cooper and Kris Sydnor, Most Rebel Spirit; Brittany Washburn and Sean Bomar, Most Talented. Teachers nominated three senior girls and three senior boys for the honor of being Mr. and Miss McKenzie High School. The entire student body voted on the award. Chosen for this honor are Savanna Cooper and John Craig Howell. Congratulations to all of these students so honored by their classmates.

On Monday, we issued 874 Forms to all students to be completed and returned as soon as possible. The 874 Forms identify those students and their families that are employed by or housed by the federal government. The school must have a form completed by all students and signed by parents even though they may not have a connection with the federal government. The 874 Forms allow us to qualify for additional money from the government. Please complete these as soon as possible and return to school.

The cross country team will have its first meet on Tuesday at the U.S.J. Invitational. We will field a complete team of boys and girls to participate in this meet. Head Coach Christina French has a good mixture of underclassmen and upperclassmen as they have this inaugural run of the year.

On September 16, our student-athletes will have a chance to order letter jackets from Ken-Tenn Sports. Only those students who have actually lettered will be permitted to order jackets at this time. Students will need a $60.00 deposit to Ken-Tenn to order letter jackets during their lunch break. We will order a second time after the football season is complete for those lettermen.

The football team played its first region game at Camden last Friday night in a game that has traditionally been a benchmark as to the progress of the team so far. After a sluggish first quarter, the Rebels dominated both sides of the ball in racing to a 27-7 halftime advantage. The Rebels sealed the win with an impressive second half drive to extend the score to 33-7. Two more second-half scores determined the final outcome. Offensively, the Rebels rode the arm of sophomore Drew Hayes who was 16-25 for 310 yards and junior Cody Cook who ran for over 130 yards. Defensively, the Rebels turned in another solid performance with players defending the pass and run well. This week the Rebels return home to play 3-A Dyer County at Rebel Stadium at 7:30 p.m. Come out and support the Rebels.

Our halls have been filled with campaign posters as our annual Student Council elections were held on Friday, September 5. All of the candidates recorded speeches that were aired during homeroom Friday morning. Students filled out ballots and votes were tallied by faculty sponsors.

Officers elected were Josie Jarrett as president, Harris Laughrey as vice-president, Jana Barham as secretary/treasurer and Tyler Reeder as parliamentarian. Faculty representatives are Jill Renfro, Sherrie Austin, William Hardy and Tim Mason.

On Monday, your child was given a PL 874 Pupil-Parent Information Form. Please assist us by making sure your child returns the form to his or her homeroom teacher. The purpose is for us to receive Impacted Aid Funds. Our school system receives federal assistance for each child identified by the survey.

Our football team has completed three games. We opened with back to back one-touchdown losses to Dresden and Huntingdon. The Dresden loss came in double overtime. The Rebel rebounded this week with a 44-20 win over Hollow Rock-Bruceton. Our next home game is Thursday, September 11 against West Carroll. Game time will be 6:30.

Our fall parent-teacher conference will be on Tuesday, September 16. The conferences will begin at 3:30 and end at 6:30. We invite all parents to come and meet your child's teacher. The students will have a progress report from each of their classes. If you are unable to attend, the reports will be set home the following day.

On September 17, a representative from Ken-Tenn sports will be here to take orders for letter jackets. Any student currently on the football or basketball teams, cheerleaders and members of last year's soccer team are eligible to order a jacket. A thirty dollar deposit will be required to place an order.

Here are a couple of dates to keep in mind. September 22 there will be no school. School photos will be made on September 30.
