The cross country teams had their first meet of the
season at the U.S.J. Invitational. Seniors Amber King
and Sarah Hartz led the Lady Rebels by placing 19th and
23rd respectively. Amber's time for the meet was 25:45
and Sarah ran in 26:09. The young boys' team had a good
meet by placing 10th out of 16 teams. Sophomore Caleb
Owen finished in 25th place with a personal best time of
19:54. The next meet for the teams is the JCM
Invitational on Monday, September 29.
The golf teams played one match last week against
Clarksburg and Gibson County. The boys' squad picked up
two wins to run their season record to 12-2. Carson
Rider and John French shot 36 and 37 respectively to
pace the Rebels. The girls defeated Gibson County, but
lost to Clarksburg. Freshman Kristi Petering shot her
best score of the season with a 51. This week the teams
play at Gibson County on Monday; at home against Camden,
Dresden, and Bradford on Tuesday; and at Lexington on
September 22.
Sophomore Elaine Haw has earned the right to participate
in NYATT Contest sponsored by the All American Hunter
Horse Congress in Columbus, Ohio. Elaine will compete
against young people from Australia, Germany, Canada,
and Mexico as well as teams from 48 states. Elaine has
been involved in 4-H and this activity, both of which
add to the educational experience she has had here at
school. Good luck to her as she competes in Ohio on
October 20.
Ms. Jo Ann Elam has begun an ACT Prep class at school in
preparation for the ACT assessment on October 25. The
prep session is open to all seniors involved in taking
the October 25 assessment. The class will begin at 7:00
A.M. on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday and Tuesday and
Thursday the next week. We will follow this alternating
schedule until the test date. The class will use videos
and computer software. They will also need to purchase a
$10.00 workbook as soon as possible. The workbook may be
used outside the prep classes for students who want to
cover more material. All seniors taking the October
assessment should take this very important prep class.
Last Thursday we had Parent-Teacher Conference. Although
we had very good turnout, we still had several parents
not in attendance. Please be advised that on Friday that
teachers issued progress reports to students whose
parents were not in attendance. I want to thank publicly
the Beta Club for serving as tour guides for the
conference. I think they provided a useful service in
directing parents to classrooms.
This week is Homecoming week at McKenzie High School. We
have a number of activities planned to promote school
spirit and enthusiasm for our game against Adamsville on
Friday. The Student Council has planned several dress-up
days when students will be judged by their originality
and their following the theme of the day. As always, we
expect students to follow school dress code within
reason. Certainly, inappropriate and revealing clothes
will not be allowed. Students will also be engaged in
intramurals during homeroom all week. Volleyball and
battleball are the two hotly contested events. Friday
will feature a Talent Showcase, music by Brittany
Washburn and her band Sundance, finals in intramurals,
and a pep rally.
On Friday night, we will have the Homecoming ceremony at
Rebel Stadium beginning promptly at 7:00 P.M. Five girls
were selected by the M-Club from the nominees of the
student body. Those selected are Savanna Cooper, Heather
Flippin, Jessica Johnson, Carrie Stambaugh, and Heidi
Thomas. The Homecoming Court will preside over the game
against the Adamsville Cardinals. We will have a
Homecoming dance at the high school cafeteria from 10:00
P.M. - 12:00 A.M. Security will be provided to insure a
safe and secure environment. Students are aware of the
rules we have regarding dress/apparel and dancing for
the Homecoming dance. Again, we expect students to
cooperate.
Last Friday night the Rebels improved their record to a
perfect 3-0 as they defeated 3-A Dyer County in
non-region action. The Rebels had a balanced attack with
approximately 175 rushing and 175 passing. The stingy
Rebel defense held the Choctaw offense to around 100
yards of total offense and allowed only one touchdown
after 45 yards in penalties on the drive. The Rebels led
22-7 at halftime and tallied twice in the second half
for the 35-7 victory. The Rebels return to Region 6-AA
action with their Homecoming game at Rebel Stadium at
7:30 P.M. Recognition of the royalty will begin at 7:00
P.M. Come out for the game and the exciting Homecoming
pre-game activities.
The band will begin its competitive season this Saturday
at Milan. The Milan Invitational Marching Contest allows
area bands to begin polishing their performances for
State Competition. This year the band has as its theme
"The Sound of Music." They present a dazzling
show that appeals to the ear and the eye. Good luck to
them as they represent our school.
I want to recognize a special group of our fans who call
themselves the McKenzie Maniacs. Those enthusiastic
supporters of our football team have infused new spirit
into the game. I plan to designate a place for them to
stand - and they do stand and cheer - so that they can
lead our students and fans during the game. Many thanks
to them for supporting their alma mater.
School will not be in session for students on Monday,
September 22. We will have a professional development
day for teachers.
