Considering what the Lady Rebel track team was up
against, McKenzie did quite well. With a plethora of 3A teams and perennial A-AA powers, the
Lady Rebs managed to pick up a few ribbons here and there
and finished eighth among 16 teams in last Friday's meet
at Union City.
"We were four points away from being sixth and that's not
bad when you look at the teams who beat us," said MHS
coach David Duncan. "Half the teams that beat us are 3A
teams.
Dyersburg's girls won the meet, followed by Ripley,
Jackson Central-Merry, University School of Jackson,
Munford and Jackson Christian.
"I have no complaints with how we did," said Duncan. "We
did fine; now we just have to go back out and get better."
For the Lady Rebels, Julie Smith was first in the discus
and sixth in the triple jump. Sarah Hartz was second in
the 800 and Jessica Johnson was sixth in the discus. Hope
Wyder took fifth in the 100.
In the 400 relay, Smith, Mallory Brandon, Renee Crawley
and Wyder finished fifth. In the 880 relay, the team of
Netisha Gordon, Brandon, Crawley and Wyder took fifth. The
mile relay team of Brandon, Mary Holland, Crystal Mann and
Crystal Maddox was fifth. In the two-mile relay, Holland,
Mann, Kayla Dudley and Terri Mask took sixth.
"We did some stuff better and some stuff wasn't," Duncan
said.
On the boys' side, Shawn Luna was sixth in the shot put
while the two-mile relay team of Craig Pruitt, Ty Winkler,
Caleb Owen and Kent Ozment was fifth.
McKenzie will be at University School of Jackson this
Thursday for a 19-team meet. |

Huntingdon's Mustangs had a relatively good week in
baseball, despite the loss to Henry County in a
heartbreaking 4-3 decision on April 8. They defeated
Greenfield 10-0 on April 11 and Clarksburg 15-2 on April
12.The week began with a postponement of the Clarksburg game
which had been scheduled for Monday, April 7. However the
Henry County game was played on schedule and Will White
struck out six Patriot batters in the heartbreaking loss.
Although Henry County ultimately won the contest in eighth
inning, the Stangs led most of the game.
Henry County came out and scored in the top of the first
inning after Sanders walked and Johns hit a single.
However in the bottom of the third inning, the Stangs
managed to score three runs on two hits with Brian Nellett
hitting a double and Justin Truett hitting a single.
Truett, Scott Hampton and Joseph Butler scored the runs.
Nellett was the leading hitter for the day by hitting a
single in the bottom of the eighth inning, but he was left
on base.
The Stangs had no difficulty with the Yellowjackets on
Friday afternoon with Nellett getting three hits and
Corren Tippitt getting two in the 10-0 victory. Nellett,
John Taylor, Will White and Mark Newsome were credited
with two RBI's each. In the first inning, Tippitt, and
Taylor each hit a single while Nellett hit a double and
all three scored to take a 3-0 lead. Matt Spellings and
Adam Parish also singled in the inning. Andrew Maddox
walked in the second inning and scored after Nellett hit a
single. Spellings walked in the third and scored while the
Stangs scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Tippitt and Nellett led off with a single each, Parish
walked, and White and Newsome singled and all five scored.
By the end of four innings, Huntingdon led 10-0. The Yellowjackets failed to score in the top of the fifth to
end the game on the 10-run rule. Nellett was credited with
the victory, striking out 10 batters, while Caleb Farmer
took the loss.
Saturday, the Stangs hit everything thrown in the first
and second innings to take an insurmountable lead against
the Rockets. The Rockets began well, but could not get the
runners home to score runs. Clarksburg led off with a
double by Lewis while Nick Cobb hit a line drive toward
right field which was caught from first baseman John
Taylor. Gurley and Dusty Boyd each reached base, Gurley on
a single, but failed to score.
The Stangs came out with singles by Parish and Maddox.
Tippitt and Nellett walked while Taylor reached base on a
fielder's choice. Spellings singled, Hampton doubled and
White singled before Parish and Maddox returned for a
second bat and each singled again. By the end of the first
inning, Huntingdon led 8-0. The second inning Spellings
had three up and three down, striking out all three
Rockets. In the bottom of the inning however, the Stangs
continued to get base runners with Hampton getting the
only hit before Tippitt homered, scoring four RBI's for
the Stangs. Spellings pitched the entire game, struck out
10 batters while allowing four hits.
Clarksburg's runs came in the top of the fifth inning.
Lewis singled and N. Cobb waked before Gurley hit a double
to score both runs. Huntingdon won the game 15-2.
This week, Huntingdon will travel to Clarksburg on
Wednesday, host Waverly on Thursday, and host West Carroll
next Monday. |
