Lions Lit Up By Taylor, Shut Down By
Hayes |

There's nothing like a big district victory to get a
team back on track. After a couple of heartbreaking recent losses, the
McKenzie Rebels rebounded for a 9-1 District 11AA win over
visiting Camden last Wednesday.
The win landed the Rebs solidly in second place among
league teams.
"We really haven't been struggling; we just lost a couple
of close games," said McKenzie coach Josh Kee. "It was
good to get a win and we really haven't been playing that
bad."
The Camden game was the only game last week. McKenzie
built in a light week in the season to take care of rain
games. But the light schedule had another by-product: the
Rebels returned with live arms and fresh legs.
"The time off let us regroup, refocus and rest our arms,"
said Kee.
The time off paid dividends.
Freshman pitcher Drew Hayes improved to 3-1 overall
(including two saves) with his three-hit, eight-strikeout,
complete-game performance.
"Drew has been pitching well for us," said Kee. "And we
played well defensively. We had a good defensive day and
no errors."
Offensively, Jay Taylor used his whooping stick to do a
little yard work. He crushed a three-run homer and drove
home five runs. In addition, McKenzie did a lot of the
little things well: bunting, sacrificing, and
manufacturing runs and runners.
"We laid down a couple of bunts and got a couple of
sacrifice flies to move runners around," Kee said. "I was
pleased with our execution."
In the first inning, the Rebels scored three runs to take
the early lead. Matt Jones walked and Hayes reached on an
error, setting the table for Taylor's two-run triple.
Later, Jake Smith tacked on an RBI single. Daniel
Hollowell also reached safely in the first.
In the third, Winston singled and advanced when Ghyers
reached on an error. Winston was later retired on the
bases. Matt Ghyers reached on an error and Hollowell was
plunked. That enabled Clint Manns to bring home Ghyers
with a single.
In the fourth, Hayes doubled, Taylor walked and Winston's
fielder's choice brought in Hayes.
In the big fifth, Robert Jones reached on an error, which
scored Hollowell, who had singled. Manns' sac fly moved
Jones up. Hayes walked then Taylor cleared the bases with
his blast.
"We're getting hits up and down the lineup," said Kee.
"That makes it tough on the other pitchers."
Taylor was 2-2 with five RBI; Hollowell was 2-3 with an
RBI. Manns singled with an RBI. Hayes doubled while
Winston and Smith each singled.
The Rebels are back in action this week. Today (Wednesday)
they travel outside the district when they visit
Huntingdon. Riverside pays a call at McKenzie on Friday. |

Huntingdon’s Mustangs had a productive three games last
week with wins over district opponents Hollow
Rock-Bruceton and Clarksburg and a rivalry game against
Camden.
In their first game of the week, the Stangs faced the
Tigers of Hollow Rock-Bruceton and picked up a 9-2
victory. The Tigers began with a first inning run after
Kerry Hunt singled and ultimately scored. Their second run
came in the top of the third inning with a double by David
Huntoon who scored on an error to give the Tigers a 2-0
lead until the Stangs came to bat in the bottom of the
inning. Scott Hampton led off with a double and Justin
Truett reached base on an error and both players scored to
tie the game in the third. The Stangs had a really
productive fourth inning with singles by Brian Nellett,
John Taylor, Hampton and Mark Newsome. Will Spellings
walked and four runs scored to give Huntingdon a 6-2
advantage. A seventh run scored in the bottom of the fifth
inning after Corren Tippitt singled and later scored.
Taylor had a second single for the day. The final two runs
came in the bottom of the sixth inning. Newsome and Adam
Parish each singled and scored while Andrew Maddox
singled, but was left on base. Will White picked up the
win for the Tigers while Josh Edwards was credited with
the loss.
On Tuesday, April 15, the Stangs hosted the Lions of
Camden and scored well throughout the game. Parish led off
the bottom of the first inning with a homerun and by the
end of the inning, Huntingdon overcame a three-run deficit
to lead 4-3. Maddox hit a homerun in the second inning as
the Stangs scored four additional runs and took the game
out of Camden’s reach. A single run was scored in the
third while seven runs crossed the plate in the fourth
inning as Parish homered for a second time and Nellett
also homered for the Stangs. Huntingdon took a 15-3
victory with Nellett gaining credit for the victory.
On Wednesday, the Stangs traveled to Clarksburg for
another district match and came home with a 19-3 victory.
Boyd and Lewis pitched for the Rockets while Hampton was
credited with the victory for the Stangs. Huntingdon led
off with two first inning homers by Nellett and Taylor and
led 3-0 after one. Three singles highlighted the second
inning with six additional runs crossing the plate. After
two complete innings, Huntingdon led 9-0. Huntingdon
scored four more runs in the top of the fourth and
Clarksburg countered with three of their own as Huntingdon
took a 13-3 lead after four. The fifth inning found the
Stangs with a homerun from Hampton and doubles from
Spellings and Jake Mason. Huntingdon won the contest in
five innings.
Huntingdon catcher Brian Nellett tries to find the loose
ball as David Huntoon crosses the plate, giving the Tigers
a momentary 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning. Will
White (#12) was ultimately the winning pitcher. |
