Rebs Effort Better Against Cavaliers |
 |
| |
| |
By Jim Steele

Crockett County's football team may be every bit as good
as advertised. The Cavaliers have size, speed and are well
coached.
But in their scrimmage with the McKenzie Rebels on Friday,
they found out MHS was pretty good too. Crockett Co.
topped McKenzie 3-1 in scrimmage play before a crowd of
137 at the MHS practice field, but that was not indicative
of how close the two teams were."Crockett has a good
team, but we picked it up and made some improvement," said
McKenzie coach Wade Comer. "The attitude and effort was
there and that was a good sign, but we made a lot of
mental errors."
Bad snaps and interceptions halted some McKenzie
drives, but those are things that will soon be on the
mend.
"We have to correct a lot of things and they are things
that can be fixed," said Comer. "Against that competition,
I thought our offense was a bright spot."
The Rebels moved the ball consistently against the Cavs,
working almost exclusively from the shotgun. But McKenzie
had much success running the football and when the ball
was in the air, receivers caught it for the most part.
"We finally put it together and played exceptionally
well," said Comer. "The line protected Drew (Hayes,
quarterback) and opened up lanes for Cody (Cook, running
back). Clint (Anderson) has had a good fall camp and
gotten better. We moved the ball well against them, but we
were our own worst enemy for the most part."
Comer said his receiver corps has gotten tougher.
"They are getting acclimated to the contact," he said.
"They know that they are going to get hit over the middle,
so they might as well keep their eye on the ball and try
to make something good happen if they are going to get hit
anyway."
Against South Side and Humboldt last Tuesday, McKenzie
found itself in a disjointed situation. Rain, lightning
and three-way action somewhat limited the Rebs.
"I didn't think we made as much improvement as we
should have in that scrimmage," said Comer. "But we picked
it up against Crockett County."
The Rebels edged Humboldt 1-0 and dueled to a scoreless
draw with South Side.
Daniel Duncan (back) and Brad Campbell (wrist) were
held out of the scrimmages this week. Campbell should be
cleared to play this week. Duncan will be checked out this
week.
McKenzie played host to Henry County Tuesday night in
the final scrimmage of the pre-season. That scrimmage
began at 3:30 p.m. |

Mustangs Edge South Side in Scrimmage |
 |
| |

Huntingdon is looking for a little more tenacity in its
football team, says Mustang coach Mike Mansfield.HHS traveled to Jackson-South Side last week and edged the
Hawks 2-1 in pre-season play, but Mansfield was hoping
that his team would show a better effort.
"We had a good scrimmage, but overall, I was disappointed
in how we played," said the coach. "We should have been
more physical on defense."
That is a concern for the coach, given his team's
leadership.
"We have 18 seniors and we have high expectations," said
Mansfield. "We weren't as mentally tough as we need to
be."
The Mustangs moved the ball well, but had some mistakes
that proved costly. But the coach believes his team can
rebound.
"We had opportunities, but we turned the ball over and did
some things to ourselves," Mansfield said. "This week,
we'll go back to the basics and emphasize tackling and
being more physical."
Starting quarterback Adam Parrish suffered a hand injury
that required stitches. He will likely be held out of
workouts this week, but should be fine when the jamboree
comes around. That gave Cody Baker a chance to step up.
"Baker got a chance to play a lot," said the coach. "It
served its purpose. He took us on an 85-yard drive."
The coach said he saw a lot of other good things in the
scrimmage.
"We had a lot of individual efforts that were very good,"
Mansfield said. "We made some progress."
The Mustangs will host Dresden 6 p.m. Friday at
Huntingdon. Mansfield is a DHS alumnus, incidentally.
On Thursday, Aug. 21, 6 p.m., the Mustangs will host an
open house at the fieldhouse. The coaches will pass out
hats to the players. Teammates and parents will be treated
to a barbecue supper. |

Rebel Golf Brings Mix of Youth, Experience |
 |
| |

By Jim Steele

With match play beginning Thursday, McKenzie High
School's golf team hopes to capitalize on its summer
momentum. Most of the Rebel linksters took part in summer tournament
action and that activity, along with a nice mix of youth
and experience, could propel them a long way.
MHS will play Huntingdon and Clarksburg in a three-way
match 4 p.m. Thursday at Carroll Lake Golf Course and
Smith hopes the match serves as a springboard to good
things.
"I think we have a decent team and our kids have improved
two-fold over last year," said MHS golf coach Larry Joe
Smith. "We had 16 wins last year and we did that with a
lot of freshmen. But the kids have played on the Vince
Gill Tour and it has made a world of difference."
Smith hopes that summer experience translates to low
scores in the fall.
"We have to see if we can do it in competition," Smith
said. "Whether we can do it in matches remains to be seen.
Even though we are young, we are experienced."
John French is the lone senior, but he'll be bolstered by
seven sophomores: Marshall Smith, Jake Brown, Craig
Broadbent, Beau Brown, Justin Wilson, Justin Petering and
Mikey King. Carson Rider is the lone freshman.
On the girls team, Courtney Creasy, Tish Brown and Kristi
Petering will be joined by transfer Megan Cox.
"We have two juniors a sophomore and a freshman, so we are
young there, too," Smith said.
"We've beefed up our schedule and we think we have a
chance to make run and build on what we've accomplished
this summer," Smith said. "We have a lot of competition
amongst ourselves, so the kids are pushing each other."
Home matches begin 4 p.m. at Carroll Lake and Smith
encourages the public to come out and watch these young
golfers.
"It gets intense out there," he said. |

War Eagles Play Well Against Dresden’s Lions in Pre-Season
Scrimmage |
 |
| |

By Pat Cole

West Carroll’s War Eagles played hard as their 35-man
squad met a much larger (both in size and number) Lions
squad from Dresden Friday afternoon. Playing on the War
Eagles practice field before a good crowd, the Lions took
a 3-0 lead before the War Eagles got on the board. The
Lions ultimately won the match 4-2 with Chancy Depriest
made both scores for the War Eagles. Both teams ran the
ball well and both quarterbacks indicated their ability to
throw the ball this fall. Chris Cannon had several
receivers during the afternoon scrimmage and managed to
connect on several good throws. He also ran the ball when
he was unable to find an open receiver. Senior Shane
Depriest will undoubtedly be the leading running back for
the team this fall and got several good runs early in the
afternoon. Defensively the team is blessed with both size
and determination. |
