Lady Rebs Heat Up in Home Opener

Clarksburg's Monica Burton didn't do too badly at McKenzie last Friday night in the Lady Rebels' home opener.

She was 4-7 shooting, hit three triples and scored 11 points for the Lady Rockets. Only problem was Clarksburg couldn't find her often enough. In addition, the Lady Rockets didn't have an answer for McKenzie freshman Anna Trull, who exploded for 19 second-quarter points and helped lead McKenzie to a 63-24 victory.

McKenzie had too much offense, too much defense and too much production. The Lady Rebels shot more times in the second frame than Clarksburg did for the entire game forced 26 turnovers and never was threatened. MHS cruised to an 18-8 first quarter lead as Trull led McKenzie to a 12-0 run to start the second frame.

If Clarksburg entertained any notions of shaking off the slow start, they were negated rather quickly as McKenzie took a 30-8 lead. Trull had two three bombs, a three-point play and sandwiched three layups between two Burton bombs. Renee Crawley, Jalisa Brown and Brooke Cole contributed to the run.

McKenzie fashioned a 44-14 lead at the half. That was pretty much that.

"Right now, we're working on the little things," said Clarksburg coach Jamie Lindsey. "We are doing some things better, but we are making progress."

Credit Clarksburg for not giving up. It just had problems battling a larger, stronger and faster McKenzie team on the boards. The Lady Rebs outrebounded Clarksburg 48-16 and had 29 offensive boards.

Clarksburg only managed three second-chance shots.

"But we didn't give up," Lindsey said. "We're still hanging in there."

McKenzie senior Sarah Hartz and Burton traded threes in the third frame, but McKenzie managed a 56-18 lead after three. MHS frosh Jill Taylor and Clarksburg's Whitney Epperson swapped triples in the fourth and Alicia Moore managed a stickback to finalize the scoring for the Lady Rebels.
Overall, McKenzie was 27-71 from the floor. F

llowing Trull's 19, Crawley added 10, Hope Wyder tossed in eight and Hartz scored seven.

Burton led Clarksburg with 11. Epperson added six and freshman Rebecca McDaniel scored five. The Lady Rockets were 8-27 shooting.

GLEASON GIRLS 82, CLARKSBURG 38 at Gleason - Amy Suddath and Meagan Price each had 18 points as the powerful Lady Bulldogs captured an inter-regional victory. Burton scored 12, Keri Grant added nine, McDaniel scored eight and Jamie Pritchard scored seven. Epperson tossed in two.

Amber Wiseman and Gina Leach each had nine for Gleason.

Rebels Hold off Rockets for Victory

McKenzie was having its way with Clarksburg's boy's basketball team during the Rebels' home opener last Friday night.

The Rebs raced to a 22-9 lead late in the first frame and entered the dressing room with a handy 37-22 lead at the half. Seems like McKenzie could have phoned it in from there.
Clarksburg seemed to say, "not so fast."

The Rockets closed within seven late in the game and had McKenzie a bit shaken. But the Rebels righted the ship and ended the game on an 11-5 run to take a 65-51 victory.

McKenzie coach Larry Joe Smith was pleased with the win, but not the route taken to victory.

"We didn't play well at all," Smith said. "They did some things on defense that I thought was effective."

That being a triangle-and-two defense to neutralize seniors John French and Bryan Huffman. Huffman had 11 first-half points, French had seven and the Rockets had no answers...until the third quarter.

"We put a triangle and two on them to keep French from getting the ball," said Clarksburg coach Mike Limbaugh. "But then Duncan killed us."

That would be senior Daniel Duncan, who was a force for the Rebels inside. He had 15 points, mostly in the paint or from the free throw line.

"Daniel is stepping up big," said Smith. "We were able to score in the paint tonight."

Not only did Duncan do the job in the paint, but so did junior Clint Anderson. He scored 10 points, but pretty much saved the day.

With 3:54 to play in the game, Clarksburg's Justin Bolen scored to cut the MHS margin to eight, 54-46. Thirty-two seconds later, Anderson scored in the paint. Two seconds after that, he stole the inbound pass and scored again. A lead that could have been whittled to six had been inflated to 12 in a mere two-seconds. Clarksburg never recovered.

Blake Singleton's threebie with 3:00 to play cut the lead to nine, but McKenzie ended the game with a 7-2 run.

"Anderson made a big steal and made it a 12-point game," said Smith. "He made a big play for us right there."

Limbaugh thought his team lost its legs a bit.

"This was our third game this week," he said. "It took its toll on us. We played hard and these guys will do that."

The Rebels were 23-50 from the floor and gathered 34 rebounds. John Craig Howell had 10 points and seven rebounds. Anderson also had seven boards. French scored nine and Randy Lacey tossed in six.

Cody Scott and Justin Bolen each had 10 to lead the Rockets. Joseph Bolen had nine. Clarksburg was 20-50 from the floor and had 18 rebounds.

McKenzie is 4-2 while Clarksburg falls to 0-8.

GLEASON BOYS 66, CLARKSBURG 60 at Gleason - Brandon Bailey scored 21, Byron Fuqua added 15 and Bradley Maddox 10 as the host Bulldogs upended Clarksburg.

Joseph Bolen added 24, Justin Bolen and Cody Scott each had 10 for the Rockets.

Huntingdon’s Fillies came out playing well offensively and defensively while Gleason’s Lady Bulldogs struggled offensively for most of the game. The Fillies took an 11-4 lead after one and by the end of the first half led 36-15. They improved their margin to 56-44 after three and ultimately won the contest 66-44.

Crystal Fuller and Waneca Melton led the Fillie charge with 20 and 19 points respectively while Gleason’s Meagan Price scored 24 points to lead all scorers in the contest. Kayla Hudson also hit in double figures for the Lady Dawgs with 10 total points.

The Lady Dawgs were charged with more fouls, sending the Fillies to the line to shoot 22 shots. Huntingdon hit 12 of those shots. Gleason was four of six at the line. However, the Fillies also hit 24 field goals to Gleason’s 18 and Gleason hit four from three-point range while Huntingdon connected on only two attempts.

Additional points were scored as follows: HUNTINGDON: Pritchard: 9, Ashlee Lockhart: 6, Sharri Smith: 6, Jessica Hilliard: 6. GLEASON: Amber Wiseman: 4, Amy Suddath: 3, Riley Auvenshine: 3.

John Thomas had one of those nights when he was almost perfect from the field and was perfect from the line, hitting two of two. In the process, he hit five shots from three-point range and led all scorers with 27 total points. The Mustangs hit extremely well throughout the night from three-point range as Terrance Bell and Garrett Meggs also connected on two each and scored six points each for the night. Kenneth Hillsman added 13 points for the Stangs while Chris Donald and Blake Hampton scored six each and Brent Taylor scored two.

The Bulldogs were led by Brandon Bailey with nine while Lucas Carey scored eight, Bradley Maddox scored five, Ethan Lowrance and David Dycus scored three each and Adam Bennett added two.

Huntingdon took a 16-7 lead after one and improved their margin to 31-14 by intermission. By the end of the third period, the Mustangs held a 60-17 advantage and with Mustang freshmen in the game the final period, Huntingdon ultimately won the contest 66-30.
