The Tennessee Sports Writers Association lauded several
local players last week.McKenzie quarterback Drew Hayes earned first-team Class 2A
all-state honors from the group.
Hayes, a 6-0, 200 lb. sophomore, set single-game,
single-season and career passing marks at McKenzie. He
completed 192-353 passes for 2898 yards. He had 23
touchdowns and 18 interceptions. The Rebels finished with
a 9-3 mark and reached the second round of the playoffs.
Hayes also earned All-West Tennessee sophomore of the year
by a regional publication.
Huntingdon placed three on the all-state list. Senior
Terrance Bell, 5-10, 175 lbs, who set a Blue Cross Bowl
with 321 yards rushing and six touchdowns, had over 2,400
yards for the season in leading the Mustangs to a 14-1
season and the Class 2A state championship. He was joined
by defensive end Brian Nellett (6-3, 240), who was the
Class 2A state championship defensive player of the game,
and freshman Chris Donald (6-2, 190), who earned
recognition as a linebacker. Bell was listed as West
Tennessee's player of the year.
Huntingdon coach Mike Mansfield was listed as the Class 2A
coach of the year by the TSWA.
In Class A, West Carroll placed two on the elite chart.
Senior Shane DePriest, 6-1, 200, earned a reputation as a
hard-nosed player and perhaps one of the best to lace up
the pads for the War Eagles. He was listed on the Class A
all-state team. DePriest ran for nearly 1,400 yards in
leading West Carroll to the Region 8A championship and a
state-playoff berth.
DePriest had company. Offensive lineman Wesley Arnold, a
6-1, 315 lb. senior, also made the august group for his
efforts.
Other area players of note to make the list included Obion
Central quarterback Wes Moore and wide receiver Brian
Kissell of Obion Central in 3A, running back Rod Smith of
Milan, wide receivers Bill Joyner of Trenton and Daniel
Beasley of Milan, kicker Sam Sullivan of Milan, linebacker
Terricus Davis of Milan, defensive back Daylan Walker of
Milan, athlete Myron Fulton of Chester County, athlete
Josh Boyd of Camden and offensive lineman Justin Baker of
Dresden.
The TSWA voted on its all-state team prior to the start of
the Class A championship game at Murfreesboro. |
