McKenzie Middle School Cheerleaders to Perform During Liberty Bowl
 
  
The McKenzie Middle School Cheerleaders are about to embark on the biggest trip of their young lives. They are to be part of a 250 middle and high school cheerleader performance during intermission of the Liberty Bowl game on December 31. The game will be between Colorado State and TCU. The squad was to leave on December 30, learn their routine on arrival and then march in a parade on Beal Street in addition to the performance on December 31.

Point Guard Club Christmas Tournament Provides Exciting Prep Basketball

The annual Huntingdon Point Guard Coca Cola Christmas Classic provided some interesting basketball games for area fans as teams from Memphis, Waverly, Pickett County, Crockett County, Adamsville, Nashville and Chester County traveled to Carroll County to take on county teams from McKenzie, Huntingdon, Hollow Rock-Bruceton and West Carroll. The 18 games were played in a round robin format with no championships determined.
Games began on Thursday with West Carroll, Huntingdon and Hollow Rock-Bruceton girls and West Carroll boys playing single games. The results of those games follow:

West Carroll Lady War Eagles 67-Adamsville Lady Cardinals 81

In the opening game of the tournament, West Carroll's girls came out hitting well and took the early lead by getting three, three-point plays and a three-pointer. Four Lady War Eagles shot in double figures as they took a 22-16 lead after one. By intermission however, the Lady Cardinals had tied the contest at 34 and by the end of three full quarters, they led 64-51. Eliza Spry led the Lady Cardinals with 29 points, including seven shots from three-point range. Jessica Murphy and Brittany Baker had three and two shots from three-point range for the Lady War Eagles as they led West Carroll with 20 and 22 points respectively. The Lady War Eagles were out manned in the game as they were limited to play from eight players and the Lady Cardinals had more reserves, playing 14 girls throughout the contest for their 81-67 victory.

Huntingdon Fillies 51-Memphis Fairley Lady Bulldogs

The second contest was close for two quarters as the Fillies began slowly, but they maintained a lead throughout for a solid win. Huntingdon led 10-8 after one and 19-16 at intermission. By the end of three periods of action they had improved their margin to 31-20 before winning the game 51-33. Crystal Fuller, Lakeah Lockhart and Brooke Pritchard led the Fillies' attack with 18, 12 and 11 points respectively. Cherika Hart was the only Lady Bulldog to gain double figures. Twenty of the Fillies points over the final two periods came at the charity stripe with only 12 scored from the field.

Hollow Rock-Bruceton Lady Tigers 38-Waverly Lady Tigers 65
The battle of the Lady Tigers took place at approximately 8:00 p.m., with both groups of young ladies battling for the victory. Waverly had the edge in height and out rebounded Central's ladies on both ends of the floor. Both teams played their reserves early. Waverly came out to take a 12-9 lead after one, but by intermission they held a 33-19 advantage and ultimately won by a huge margin. Waverly had two players in double figures, Brandi Price with 19 and Kristen Banes with 16. Meagen Sturdivant led Central with nine while Whitney Owens and Kathy Doupis had eight each.

West Carroll War Eagles 53-Waverly Tigers 60

The final game on Thursday proved to be the most exciting overall as the Waverly Tigers took the early lead, but the determined War Eagles continued to battle back and tied the game on several occasions. At the 5:07 mark of the final period, Xavier Webb, who led the War Eagles with 18 points, put West Carroll up by one before Waverly took a 7-0 drive to seal the victory. Throughout the game when it appeared the Tigers were on their way to an insurmountable lead, the War Eagles had shooting spurts to narrow the margin. Waverly led at the end of one 20-13 and at intermission 34-28. At the end of three, Waverly led 46-40, but a 9-2 run by the War Eagles gave them their only lead of the contest 49-48.

Games began at noon on Friday and Saturday with seven contests played each day. The games on Friday got off to a slow start and by the mid-way point were running about 30 minutes later than scheduled. However on Saturday, the games ultimately were running ahead of schedule, allowing teams more warm-up time as the day progressed.

Hollow Rock-Bruceton Lady Tigers 50-Adamsville Lady Cardinals 42

The opening game on Friday found the Lady Tigers battling back from a first half deficit to take a victory over Adamsville. The Lady Cardinals, who scored easily in their first game had a poor scoring effort in the third period and ultimately fell to Central. Whitney Owens, Ernicka Willis and Meagen Sturdivant led the Lady Tigers with 14, 12, and 11 points respectively. Adamsville took a 15-9 lead after one and led 20-17 at intermission. However the third period, Owens hit a three-pointer and led Central 10 point scoring effort with eight as they took a 27-26 advantage. The final period, the Lady Tigers hit 10 of 19 opportunities at the line to seal the victory. Adamsville hit five of eight at the charity stripe for the same period.

Hollow Rock-Bruceton Tigers 65-Friendship Christian Commanders 60

The Tigers got off to a good start in their game with the Commanders and led 13-10 by the end of the first period. By intermission, that lead had climbed to 35-24. Poor shooting in the third quarter allowed Friendship Christian back in the game however and the game was tied at 42 by the end of the third period. After the Commanders took a small advantage early in the final period, the Tigers had a 7-0 run to put them in the lead for good. Michael Aldridge led with 21 points, including four shots from three-point range while the Tigers' Patrick Willis had three early three-pointers and an 11-point fourth period to score 20. Kerry Hunt had two shots from three-point range to score 12 total points.

McKenzie Lady Rebels 52-Memphis Fairley 40

Game seven proved costly for the Lady Rebels who had several players incur injuries which will limit their playing time for several games. Still despite the physical part of the game, Coach Dan Ridley was pleased with his player's performance, noting that it was a different type of game than they incur in this area. The Lady Bulldogs played hard, but good shooting down the stretch allowed the Lady Rebels to gain the victory, including three of four from Becky Toombs in the final minutes despite an injury which benched her for the Lady Rebels second contest of the tournament. McKenzie took a 10-6 lead after one and then led 22-9 at intermission with good defensive play. After three periods, McKenzie led 35-17 and held on to the lead by hitting 15 of 23 opportunities at the line. Fairley's Cheirka Hart hit two three-pointers and nine of 10 at the line in the final period before fouling out and led all scorers with 27 total points. Jasmine McMackins had 16 and Kristin Wiggins 10 for the Lady Rebels.

Game eight found the Rebels playing tight in the first half, but being outscored the final half as the Eagles hit extremely well from the field. John French was the only McKenzie player to shoot in double figures with two three-pointers and 12 total points. Michael McCutcheon scored 20 for the Eagles.

Huntingdon Fillies 45-Franklin Road Academy 51

Game nine was the only overtime contest in the tournament as the Fillies allowed the Lady Panthers back into their contest the final period. Hitting only five of nine opportunities at the line allowed the game to be tied at the end of regulation and the Lady Panthers hit eight of nine at the line in overtime to secure the victory. Huntingdon led 7-2 after one and 19-13 at intermission. By the end of three, the lead had dwindled to 25-22 and was tied at 39 at the end of regulation. The Fillies only points in overtime came at the line where they were six of 10. Crystal Fuller and Lakeah Lockhart led the Fillies with 21 and 10 respectively.

Game 10 found Crockett County the ultimate winner over the Panthers from Franklin Road Academy in an exciting contest.

Huntingdon Mustangs 48-Pickett County 70
In the final game on Friday night, the Mustangs were unable to keep pace with the Bobcats from Pickett County. The Bobcats were extremely physical and hit well from the field in their victory. John Thomas and Terrance Bell were the only two Stangs to reach double figures, scoring 12 and 11 respectively.

Games began at noon on Saturday and again fans found some exciting basketball throughout the day.

West Carroll Lady War Eagles 36-Waverly Lady Tigers 54

In the first game of the day, the Lady War Eagles maintained a chance to win throughout three periods of action, but were unable to keep pace the final quarter as the Lady Tigers dominated the boards. Jessica Murphy was the only Lady War Eagle to reach double figures with 17.

The second game of the day found Waverly outscoring Crockett County 18-13 to stage a comeback for a one-point victory over Crockett County. The Cavaliers had trailed the first half, but outscored the Tigers 15-9 in the third to take a six-point advantage. Leading scorers for the two teams were as follows: Bubba Nichols 24 for Waverly and Ernest Williams 16, Preston Johnson 12 and Joey Gooch 10 for the Eagles.

West Carroll War Eagles 55-Pickett County Bobcats 74

The fourteenth game of the tournament found the War Eagles struggling to keep pace with the East Tennessee Bobcats. Still, they managed to hold their own throughout the first half. Pickett County had a 12-0 run in the third quarter to take a substantial lead that would put them ahead substantially for a short period, but John Taylor's nine third period points allowed the War Eagles to trail by only seven after three. The final period, the Bobcats had six three-pointers while the War Eagles scored only six total points. Taylor led with 31 while Xavier Webb had 15 for the home team.

The Rebels fell behind early in their second game of the tournament and were unable to keep pace with the Commanders. In the fourth period, when they finally reached the charity stripe however, they hit six of six opportunities. Bryan Huffman was the only Rebel in double figures with 14.

In the Lady Rebels second game of the tournament; they were unable to keep pace with FRA, who scored much better than they had in their first outing. Jasmine McMackins was the only player to reach double figures in the contest for McKenzie.

The seventh game of the tournament found the Hollow Rock-Bruceton Tigers trying to catch up after a relatively good start. Seven three-pointers and 13 of 17 shots at the line led to the ultimate victory for the Panthers. Michael Aldridge and Patrick Willis led the Tigers with 20 and 15 respectively.

Huntingdon Mustangs 39-Chester County Eagles 53

In the tournament's final game, the Mustangs found Kenneth Hillsman the man to get the ball to as he led with 18 points. However, the Eagles had Michael McCutcheon hitting from three-point range and perfect at the line to lead all scorers with 21. Eagle Jarrett Jones added 18 for the visitor. After overcoming a small early deficit, the Eagles led throughout the game, leading 26-19 at intermission and then 39-32 after three.
