Oh So Close! Lambuth 71, Bethel 69

By Matt Floyd
Bethel Sports Information Director

The big crowd at Lambuth University got their money's worth on Monday night as the Bethel College Wildcats and Lambuth University Eagles put on quite a show. The favored Lambuth Eagles escaped with a slim 71-69 victory over the Wildcats.

The drama unfolded in the final three minutes of the game, as Bethel battled back from an 11-point deficit to cut the lead to as few as one in the final seconds. Lambuth's A.D. McCreight made two free throws at the :03 mark, giving the Eagle a 71-68 lead. McCreight then fouled Bethel's Blake Compton on the inbound pass to send Compton to the line with :01.5 remaining. Compton hit the first of two foul shots and purposely missed the second to set up the exciting finish. Bethel's Derrick Scales grabbed the offensive rebound, but his shot rolled off the rim as time expired.

Drew Woods, a sophomore from Jackson who was playing in front of hometown friends and family, scored a game high 22 points for Bethel, with seven rebounds and four assists. Kade Bosheers was three of five from beyond the arc and finished the game with 12 points while Jason Winfrey, KIAC Player of the Week, scored 10 points and pulled down six boards.

Lambuth shot 53 percent from the field for the game, including 46 percent from three-point range. The Eagles had three players in double digits, led by McCreight's 17 points.

The Cats had tremendous support in the road game. The Wildcat faithful outnumbered, or at least equaled, the home crowd. "Our kids played as hard as they have all year. We just came up a little short," stated head Coach Jeff Britt. "The effort was great, the atmosphere was tremendous and we really played well. Now it is time to regroup this week and concentrate on Berea College on Sunday."

With the loss, Bethel's five game win streak is snapped. Bethel falls to 12-8 overall while Lambuth wins it's fourth straight and improves to 14-6. Bethel hopes to bounce back on Saturday in Berea, Kentucky against the region's top ranked Berea College Mountaineers. Game time will be 2:00 p.m. CDT. Next Tuesday, the Cats will host Brescia University at 7:00 p.m.
