Hollow Rock-Bruceton Central football coach Rod
Sturdivant might consider buying stock in Nike, Reebok or
even Keds for that matter. His Tiger gridders will have lots of big shoes to fill.
"Lots of big shoes," said the coach.
Central, a team that ventured to the state quarterfinals,
graduated a pretty potent senior class. The returning
Tigers won't have a lot of experience, but that's what
pre-season camp is for.
After taking the entire month of June off, Central's
football team will start its pre-season conditioning
regimen.
"We'll get cranked up with weights and getting them in
shape," said Sturdivant. "We always give them the month of
June off and when they started the dead period, that set
us back a week, but we'll get going."
Sturdivant was pleased with how his team performed during
spring work.
"The attitude of the team was very good," he said. "The
only bad thing about it was the weather. We didn't have
very many good-weather days, but the kids worked hard."
Youth will be served, too.
"We have a lot of young kids who need to get their feet
wet real quick," he said.
The Tigers will get their chance. They scrimmage Union
City and Lewis County in pre-season exhibitions next
month.
"The focus will be to try to get the kids in shape so we
can get used to the heat," Sturdivant said. "Then we can
get started practicing that last week of July. We'll get a
lot of things done these next couple of weeks."
The Tigers will emphasize the little things as they push
toward the Jamboree, set for Aug. 22, and the season
opener a week later.
"We are going to work on throwing it, catching it and
kicking it a little bit," the coach said. |
