Some interesting tidbits have been presented this
week.
Most of the said tidbits are worthy of comment. Shall we
begin?
* NO, I AM NOT SLOBBERKNOCKER: There is a popular
mid-state website that focuses on Tennessee prep sports
and it offers a propaganda forum to football fans.
Evidently a guy on there, who calls himself "Slobberknocker"
or some such, parroted, lifted or otherwise
coincidentally used similar verbiage in his commentary
found in this corner of the McKenzie Banner last week.
I'm not critical of the site, or the dude whose parents
had a sense of humor by giving him such a bizarre name.
I just wanted to make clear that I am not he and he is
not me. He seems to be a Rebel backer, so he's not all
bad.
* NOT A BAD EFFORT: I spent Saturday watching the Bethel
Wildcats football team. You know, despite the 0-3 start,
they have an entertaining product. They are fast, wide
open and can move the football. And it felt like I was
watching a college football game. The atmosphere was
great, the crowd was into it and it was a fun day.
Bethel acquitted itself well against a quality football
team in Campbellsville (and Bacone a week ago). All the
'Cats need is confidence and time to develop. Sure, they
may have a dreadful road trip to Lambuth next week, but
I have a feeling that it won't be the romp the Eagles
think it will be.
Go support this team; it's a fun group to watch and it
is college football right here in our back yard.
* NICE TO SEE: Sunday afternoon, I saw a group of middle
school kids locking it up on the practice field in a
little game of touch football. A few months ago, I said
I was concerned that kids were too busy with their
Playstations to get out and play ball.
Well, these kids got after it. To them, football is fun
and it reminded me of the Sunday afternoons starting out
playing touch and then watching it devolve into
full-blown rugby.
* BACK TO NORMAL: I correctly picked 21 of 23 winners
last week, brining my yearly total to 56 of 67, which
brings me back to the expected level of 83.6 percent.
Not bad, but still expecting bigger things after that
horrid hiccup during Week 1. Here's to better fortunes
this week.
McKenzie over Adamsville: The Rebels will do a
homecoming dance all over the Cardinals.
Huntingdon over Chester County: Sure, the Eagles may be
the most improved team in West Tennessee, according to
some, and the Mustangs will get a test, Huntingdon still
wins.
West Carroll over Gleason: The War Eagles will top the
improved Bulldogs.
Bruceton over South Fulton: I have a hunch the Tigers
are due.
Florida over Tennessee: While the last two Vols' games
were better than any of the 13 they played in last year,
I'm still not completely sold on them. And having done
this for 20 years, I know better than to pick the Vols
in big games.
Lambuth over Bethel: The Eagles will find that this
isn't your run-of-the-mill BC team and will have to be
very careful. Could be an upset special here.
Elsewhere, I see:
JCS over Middleton, Lake Co. over Fulton City, Ky.; USJ
over Fayette Academy; Trinity over Perry County; Halls
over Greenfield; Riverside over Camden; Dresden over
Trenton; Westview over Humboldt; Milan over Union City;
South Side over Bolivar; Lexington over Fayette-Ware;
Covington over Obion Central; Brighton over Gibson Co.;
Ripley over Dyer Co.; North Side over Haywood; JCM over
Dyersburg; Hardin Co. over Munford; Kenwood over Henry
Co.; Crockett County over SBEC.
