Leota Akin
1922-2004
MCKENZIE: Services for Leota Akin, 82, were at 1:00
p.m., Saturday, August 7 at Brummitt Funeral Home with
Bro. Paul Merwin officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove
Cemetery in Trezevant.
Mrs. Akin, a homemaker, died Thursday, August 5 at her
residence.
She was born April 27, 1922 in McKenzie to the late
Susie Aylor Blaylock and Connie A. Blaylock. She was a
member of Trezevant Church of Christ.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Blane Akin, a
brother Jack Blaylock and a sister, Elvie Matheny.
Survivors include a son, Bob Cassidy of McKenzie; a
stepson, Donald Ray Akin of Huntingdon; three
grandchildren, Vaughn Cassidy, Sheila Hopkins and George
Cassidy; one step-grandchild, Richard Akin; three
great-grandchildren and one step-great-grandchild.
Max Hal Higgason
1928-2004
NORTH CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA: Former Bruceton
resident Max Hal Higgason, 76, died July 29 in North
Charleston. Masonic funeral rites are planned for a
later date at Prospect Cemetery in Hollow Rock. Bruceton
Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.
He was born on July 18, 1928 in Bruceton to the late
Samuel O. Higgason, Sr. and Evie Lena Atkinson Higgason.
He was a former football coach at Camden Central High
School.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Bruceton,
Bruceton Masonic Lodge #731 and Bruceton Chapter 314
Order of the Eastern Start. He was a Scottish Rite
Mason, a member of the Camden Elks Lodge, a retired
merchant marine officer, a U.S. Navy veteran and a
Shriner.
Survivors include a brother, James Higgason of
Springville. He was preceded in death by a daughter,
Sherry Jean Higgason.
Ronald Lee Hodge
1952-2004
MEMPHIS: Services for Ronald Lee Hodge, 52, were
conducted on Saturday, August 7 in the Dilday Funeral
Home Chapel with Brother Tony Boyd officiating.
Interment followed in the church cemetery.
Mr. Hodge died on Wednesday, August 4 at the Regional
Medical Center in Memphis.
He was born January 3, 1952 in Carroll County. His
father, Johnny Hodge preceded him in death. He was a
self-employed construction worker.
Survivors include two daughters, Jamie Hodge of
Huntingdon and April Ayers of McKenzie; one son, Scott
Hodge of Huntingdon; his mother, Mildred Roberts Hodge;
two sisters, Brenda Rains of Camden and Mary Dill of
Huntingdon; one brother, Robert Hodge of Camden and two

Virginia Marie Lowe
1939-2004
HOLLOW ROCK: Services for Virginia Marie Lowe, 64, were
at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, August 7 at Bruceton Funeral Home
with the Rev. Lloyd Rich officiating. Burial was in New
Prospect Cemetery near Hollow Rock.
Mrs. Lowe, a homemaker, died Wednesday, August 4 at Life
Care Center in Bruceton.
She was born October 28, 1939 in Henry County to the
late Carl Atlas Evans, Sr. and Frenzie Pearl McFarland
Evans. She was preceded in death by her husband, James
Doyle Lowe.
Survivors include two sons, James Robert Lowe of Camden
and Timothy Doyle Lowe of Springville; five sisters,
Margaret Bell of Martin, Nona Tyler of Scotts, Michigan,
Becky Evans of Paris, Sarah Gross of Colfax, North
Carolina and Teresa Forrest of Linwood, North Carolina;
four brothers, Tom Evans and Donald Evans, both of
Paris, Robert Lee Evans of Lewisburg and Carl Evans, Jr.
of Lakedale, Arizona.
Sion Edward Pritchard
1928-2004
HUNTINGDON: Services for Sion Edward Pritchard, 76, were
conducted on Saturday, August 7 at 11:00 a.m. at New
Hope Baptist Church with Brother Lynn Stapleton
officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.
Mr. Pritchard died Sunday, August 1 at the Huntingdon
Health & Rehabilitation Center.
He was born January 22, 1928 in Madison County to the
late Huley and Ludie King Pritchard. He was a retired
welder for Emerson Electric and an air force veteran. He
was preceded in death by his wife, Inez Pritchard and
three brothers, Johnny Pritchard, Gladen Pritchard and
Mac Dalton.
Survivors include five daughters, Kathy Tosh and
Patricia Coleman, both of Huntingdon, Terry Pritchard,
Beverly Copeland and Donna Underwood, all of Bakersville,
California; two sons, Eddie Pritchard of Bakersville,
California and Randy Pritchard of McKenzie; 10
grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Clifford “Jack” W. Sanders
1922-2004
BUENA VISTA: Services for Clifford “Jack” W. Sanders,
81, were at 10:00 a.m., Monday, August 9 at Bruceton
Funeral Home with the Rev. Leon Edwards officiating.
Burial was in the Prospect Cemetery in Hollow Rock.
Masonic services were conducted on Sunday, August 8 at
8:30 p.m.
Mr. Sanders, a retired electrical inspector for
Millington Naval Base, died Saturday, August 7 at his
home.
He was born August 16, 1922 in Waco, Texas to the late
Harm Sanders and Grace Evelyn Payne Sanders. He was a
member of Bruceton First Baptist Church, a World War II
army veteran, awarded four Bronze Stars and Bronze
Arrowhead, was a charter member of Raleigh Masonic Lodge
#770, a member of Bruceton Masonic Lodge #731, Memphis
Scottish Rite and Al Chymia Shriners.
Survivors include two sons, Charles Sanders of Buena
Vista and Clifford Joe Sanders of Memphis; a
half-sister, Ora May Davis of Waco, Texas; one
half-brother, Tom L. Jones of Grandview, Washington and
four grandchildren.
Vernon Smith
1919-2004
HOT SPRINGS, ARKANSAS: Graveside services for Vernon
Smith, 85, were conducted on Tuesday, August 3 at 10:30
a.m. at McAuley Cemetery.
Mr. Smith died Sunday, August 1 at the National Park
Hospital in Hot Springs, Arkansas.
He was born February 19, 1919 in Buena Vista to the late
William Tyler and Modie Green Smith. He was a retired
employee of Jewell Tea Company. He was preceded in death
by two brothers, Tyler Smith and Joe Smith; two sisters,
Martha Springer and Velma King.
Survivors include his wife, Frieda Smith; two daughters,
Priscilla Baggio of Bloomington, Illinois and Penelope
Henning of Newport; one sister, Imogene Hamlin of
Parsons; one brother, Gerald Smith of Parsons; one
grandchild and one great-grandson.

Katherine Williams
1927-2004
ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI: Services for Katherine Williams,
79, were at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, August 7 at Walton
Grove Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Henry with
Darrell Albea officiating. Interment followed in Cayton
Springs Cemetery in Henry.
Mrs. Williams, a retired registered nurse and former
Henry resident died Monday, August 2 in St. Louis after
a brief illness.
She was born January 1, 1927 in Henry to the late Hurley
and Peolia Fitzgerald Craig. A brother, Hurley Craig,
Jr. preceded her in death.
Survivors include her husband of 53 years, Alfred
Williams; one son, Alra Williams of McKenzie; two
sisters, Bettye Craig Hill and Jane Craig Cole, both of
Henry; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Darrell Wilson, Jr.
1962-2004
PURYEAR: Services for Billy Darrell Wilson, Jr., 42,
were held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, August 9 at the Paris
Convention Center with Warren T. Sykes and Craig Peevyhouse officiating. Interment followed in the
Puryear City Cemetery.
Mr. Wilson, a 911 board member, died on Saturday, August
7 at the Henry County Medical Center emergency room
after a sudden illness.
He was born May 22, 1962 in Murray to Bill Wilson of
Paris and Freda Ray Clendenin of Murray, who survive. He
was preceded in death by one son, Eric Wilson, who died
August 30, 2002 and his grandparents, Travis Wilson and
Shorty and Myrtle Love Ray.+
Survivors include his wife, Mary Merrell Wilson; a
daughter, Amanda Wilson of Puryear; a son Billy D.
“Tripp” Wilson III of Henry; two stepdaughters, Trish
Wilson and Kristie Freeman, both of Paris, his
stepfather, Butch Clendenin; one sister, Laurie Key of
Puryear; a grandmother, Marie King of Paris. |
