Paulette Adkisson
1948-2004
MCKENZIE: Former Paris resident Paulette Penny
Adkisson, 55, died Monday December 13, at McKenzie
Regional Hospital, after suffering an apparent heart
attack.
Her husband, Paul Adkisson, survives.
Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Saturday at Sparks
Street Church of Christ in Paris. Edward Howard
officiated. Burial was in Maplewood Cemetery.
Born Dec. 29, 1948, in Paris, she was a daughter of
Agnes Laurette Dumas Perry of Paris and the late Edwards
Penny Sr.
Mrs. Adkisson was a 1966 graduate of Central High
School, formerly of Paris. She attended Tennessee State
University in Nashville.
A member of Sparks Street Church of Christ, she served
as a facilitator director of the Voices of Joy acapella
group, and was on the kitchen committee. She also served
with the Central High Alumni Association.
She also leaved a son Joseph Christopher Penny of
Arizona; a sister: Virginia Claudette Penny Yarbrough of
Chattanooga; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Lillian Cole Luther
1912-2004
BRUCETON: Services for Lillian Cole Luther, 92, were
at 2 p.m. Sunday December 18 at Bruceton Funeral Home
Chapel with the Rev. Neel Edwards officiating. Burial
was in Prospect Cemetery in Hollow Rock.
Mrs. Luther, a retired seamstress for HIS Company, died
Friday December 17 at Camden Health and Rehabilitation
Center.
She was born July 14, 1912 in Benton County to the late
William Rice Cole and Addie Jordan Cole. She was a
member of Bruceton First Baptist Church and Bruceton
Order of Eastern Star Adah Chapter #314.
Survivors include two daughters Greta Hollingsworth of
Bruceton and Priscilla Hicks of Camden; two sons,
Willard Luther of Camden and Ray Luther of Bruceton; two
sisters, Mildred Berry of Camden and Agnes Kee of Erin;
a brother, O'Neal Cole of Bruceton; nine grandchildren
and ten great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Dewey L.
Luther.
Nancy Evelyn Carroll
1924-2004
CEDAR GROVE: Mrs. Nancy Evelyn Carroll, 80, died
Friday December 17 at the Baptist Memorial Hospital in
Huntingdon.
Funeral services were conducted on Sunday December 19 at
1:00 PM in the Chapel of Chase Funeral Home, Interment
followed in the New Independence Cemetery, Bro. Lloyd C.
Hardy officiated the service.
Mrs. Carroll was born October 13, 1924 in Carroll County
to the late James G. and Vida Ann (Latham) Hardy. She
was a retired factory worker for Bill Sill's Sports Wear
and a member of the New Independence Full Gospel Church.
She was also preceded in death by her husband William
Gordon Carroll, who died August 10, 2004, and one
brother, Ralph Hardy.
She is survived by one daughter, Linda Joan Sellers of
Cedar Grove, two sisters, Elena Ruth Carroll of
McKenzie, Mary Melton of Eva, four brothers, Lloyd C.
Hardy of Dyer, John Hardy of Cedar Grove, Dwight Hardy
of Eva, and Bill Hardy of Johnson City, four
grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, and three
great-great grandchildren.
Joe Thompson
MEMPHIS: Joseph Thomas, 88, formerly of McKenzie and
a retired carpenter, died Monday Dec. 13 in Plano,
Texas. Services were at noon Friday Dec. 17 at Leawood
Baptist Church, where he was a member, with burial in
Memphis Memory Gardens. Memphis Funeral Home Poplar
Chapel had charge. He was a Mason. Mr. Thompson, the
widower of Lula Thompson, leaves two brothers, Blake
Thompson of Bartlett and Fred Thompson of Nashville, two
grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and two
great-great grandchildren. The family requests that any
memorials be sent to the Parkinson's Foundation.
Eva Eron Hodges
1921-2004
Gleason: Services for Eva Hodges, 83, were at 2 p.m.
Sunday December 19 at Gallimore Funeral Home Chapel with
the Rev. Dale Mathis officiating. Burial was in Olive
Branch Cemetery.
Mrs. Hodges, retired inspector for Henry I. Siegel, died
Friday December 17 at Hillview Nursing Home.
She was born January 16, 1921 in Gleason to the late
William Herbert and Stella Pearl Davis Steele.
She leaves a sister Frances Rich of Lansing, Michigan.
She was preceded in death by her husband Harold Hodges.
Richard Lee Arrington
1925-2004
Manchester: Services for Richard Lee Arrington, 79,
were at 1 p.m. Saturday, December 18 at Manchester
Funeral Home with Bro. Bob Reuhling officiating. Burial
was in Shady Grove Cemetery.
Mr. Arrington, retired factory worker for Carrier
Corporation, died Tuesday December 14 at Harton Regional
Medical Center.
He was born March 16, 1925 in McKenzie to the late Lee
Andrew Arrington and Edna Brown Smith Arrington. He was
a U.S. Army Veteran.
Survivors include a daughter Debra Arrington of
Manchester; a son Richard Lee Arrington Jr., of
Summitville; three sisters Annella Arrington and Ollie
Brown Williams both of Paris, Betty Jean Terrones of St.
Petersburg, Florida; several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife Bertha Gladys
Arrington; a brother Willard Arrington and two sisters
Nanie Mae Laster and Lottie Hall.

E.E. "Bo" Edwards III
1943-2004
E.E. "Bo" Edwards III died December 14 in Nashville
after a brief illness. Born on September 28, 1943 in
Little Rock, Arkansas, he attended high school in
McKenzie and graduated from The McCallie School in
Chattanooga. He completed his undergraduate degree in
1965 at the University of North Carolina. He graduated
from Vanderbilt Law School in 1971. After working as a
prosecutor in Davidson County, he entered private law
practice in Nashville. More than fifteen years ago, he
and James Simmons formed the firm of Edwards and
Simmons, where he spent the remainder of his career. He
worked valiantly for the rights of criminal defendants.
He was elected president of the National Association of
Criminal Defense Lawyers (NACDL), serving from
2003-2004, after having worked for the organization in a
variety of capacities for nearly two decades. He worked
for more than a decade to stop the abuse of civil asset
forfeiture by the government by legally opposing the
government's efforts to seize money and property from
citizens' charge or conviction. He accepted the case of
a Nashville landscape contractor whose money was
improperly seized by police and worked for two years to
recover the landscaper's money and reputation, which
attracted national media attention. He became a lobbyist
for the cause of illegal forfeiture practices to reform
forfeiture procedures. In 1996, he testified before the
House Judiciary Committee and gave numerous speeches in
venues across the country. He received the NACDL's
prestigious Marshall Stern Award for excellence in
legislation. His commentary was sought by both print and
television media and included an appearance on the CBS
program, "Sixty Minutes." He was a founding member of
the Tennessee Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers
and served as its second president. He was also active
in the American Bar Association's Criminal Justice
Section.
Mr. Edwards is preceded in death by his father, Dr.
Elbert E. Edwards. He is survived by his mother, Aloyce
M. "Tibby" Edwards-Liles of McKenzie, a brother and
sister-in-law, Robert T. and Jenny Edwards of Evergreen,
Colorado, and a sister and brother-in-law, Meredith and
Al Lampley of Bruceton, North Carolina.
Graveside services were held at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in
McKenzie at 1 p.m. on Friday, December 17. In lieu of
flowers, memorials may be made to the Vanderbilt School
of Law or the National Kidney Foundation, 6110 Executive
Boulevard, Suite 101, Rockville, MD 10852.
Anne E. King
1916-2004
MCKENZIE: Services for Ann E. King, 88, will be at 2
p.m. Thursday Dec. 23 at Brummitt Funeral Home with Bro.
Dennis Trull officiating.
Mrs. King died Monday, Dec. 20, at McKenzie Regional
Hospital. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
Brummitt Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation will be, from 12:30 until time for services.
She was born April 17, 1916 in McKenzie to the late E.K.
Wiley and Annie Grenade Wiley. She was a member of First
Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son John K. (Elaine) King, of
Knoxville; a daughter June Ward, of Waverly; three
grandchildren, Shannon King, Debbie Little and David
Ward; four great-grandchildren Dana Lee, CPL Donnie
Little, Jr., Spencer Ward and Morgan Ward; and one
great-great-grandchild Helen Mackenzie Lee.
She was preceded in death by her husband Dale King; a
brother Ed Wiley; and three sisters Irez Phillips, Irene
McLean, and Ruth Holmes. |
