Mary Elizabeth Ball Holmes
Retired Bethel Professor
Mary Elizabeth Ball Holmes, age 95, died Monday morning
at a hospital in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, where her
daughter, Elizabeth resides. Mrs. Holmes had only
recently moved from her home in McKenzie.
Mrs. Holmes taught 25 years at Bethel College. Prior to
her college professorship, she taught Latin and
literature at McKenzie High School. She was awarded an
honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree by Bethel
College in 1992 for her many accomplishments at the
school. Her community service included teaching Sunday
school for 40 years, for which a classroom was named in
her honor at First Baptist Church and writing book
reviews for this newspaper for many years. She was the
widow of Dr. J.T. Holmes, a family physician, who
practiced for 47 years.
She leaves three children - Elizabeth H. Avery, Masters
in Public Health and MBA, of Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania;
James T. Holmes, Jr., M.D., of Staten Island, New York;
and Lewis Ball Holmes, M.D., of Wellesley,
Massachusetts; six grandchildren and four
great-grandchildren.
Her body will be cremated, said Lewis B. Holmes. A
memorial ceremony will be held in McKenzie sometime
during the month of May.
The Holmes family moved to McKenzie in April 1941 when
Dr. Holmes began his family medical practice in downtown
McKenzie. Both were reared in neighboring Henderson
County where the two met in high school and dated 13
years before marrying in 1934. Dr. Holmes obtained a
pharmacy degree at the University of Tennessee and later
entered the University of Tennessee College of Medicine
in 1936. He served as medical officer for two years for
TVA in Wilson Dam, Alabama before coming to McKenzie. He
practiced both pharmacy and medicine until his death in
1988.
Mary was the oldest of four daughters of Reverend
Fleetwood Ball and wife, Flossie. Mary received her A.B.
degree from Union University in 1929 and taught at
Morrison. She attended the University of Chicago for two
summers in the 1930s, and obtained a master's degree in
English from Memphis State University. She was a member
of Chi Omega Sorority, Delta Kappa Gamma, DAR and
numerous local organizations. She served as a
delegate-at-large from Tennessee at the Democratic
Convention at Chicago in 1932, managed Estes Kefauver's
successful campaign for the senate in the 1948 and was a
Tennessee delegate to the National Congress on Children
and Youth in Washington in 1960.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be

1913-2004
HUNTINGDON: Mrs. Esther Newbill Bush, 91, passed away
Tuesday, March 9 at Baptist Memorial Hospital in
Huntingdon. Funeral services were conducted on Thursday,
March 11 at 3:00 p.m. at the Union Academy Baptist
Church with Bro. Darryl Harris officiating. Interment
followed in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Bush was born February 2, 1913 in Carroll County to
the late Lewis and Alice Mae Morgan Newbill. She was a
homemaker and a member of Union Academy Baptist Church.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Robert
Haywood Bush, who died May 12, 1988; an infant son, Paul
Gene Bush; four brothers, Albert Newbill, Hern Newbill,
J.A. Newbill and Joe Newbill and three sisters, Lester
Syndor, Cecil Barker and Faye Fields.
Survivors include one son, Ronald Bush and one sister,
Frances Smothers, both of Huntingdon; two grandchildren
and two great-grandchildren.
Chase Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Lillie Christine McQuaide
1942-2004
AUSTELL, GEORGIA: Mrs. Lillie Christine Bryant McQuaide,
61, passed away on Thursday, March 11 at her home.
Funeral services were conducted on Sunday, March 14 at
2:00 p.m. at the Hebron United Methodist Church with
Bro. Bob White officiating. Interment followed in the
church cemetery.
Mrs. McQuaide was born August 2, 1942 in Trenton to the
late Raymond and Ruth Morgan Bryant. She was also
preceded in death by two sisters, Frances Bryant and
Margaret Balentine.
Survivors include two daughters, Belinda Ramos and Lisa
Lorene Mitchell; one son, Darrin Russell Mashburn, all
of Austell, Georgia; three sisters, Clara Lewis of
Linden, Velma Olsen and Jean Trosper, both of Rockford,
Illinois; two brothers, Tom Bryant of Huntingdon and
James Bryant of Bruceton; three grandchildren and one
great-grandson.
Chase Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Marshall Tucker Mayo
Memorial services will be held for Marshall Tucker Mayo
at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, March 28 at the National Guard
Armory, Highway 22 North, located behind Republic
Builders. Mr. Mayo died on February 15.
Ruby Carlene Hart
1915-2004
JACKSON: Graveside services for Ruby Carlene Hart, 88,
formerly of McKenzie were at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, March
10 at Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Brummitt Funeral Home was in
charge of the arrangements.
Mrs. Hart died on Monday, March 8 at Jackson-Madison
County General Hospital.
She was born October 20, 1915 in McKenzie to the late
Myrtle Hastings Robertson and Emmett Robertson. She was
a member of the Enon Baptist Church in McKenzie.
Survivors include a daughter, Mary Lynn Bullard of
Jackson; a sister, Mary Cunningham of McKenzie; four
grandchildren, Terry Hart and Ashley Bullard, both of
Jackson, Mary Jo Webb of Paris and Kelly Curry of
Huntingdon; and four great-grandchildren, Elijah,
Michael, Moriah and Owen.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Joe Hart.
Willie Travis McWherter
1923-2004
PARIS: Services for Willie Travis McWherter, 80, were at
1:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 16 at Trinity Funeral Home
with the Rev. Robert Johnson officiating. Burial was in
Greenwood Cemetery.
Mr. McWherter died on Saturday, March 13 at
Jackson-Madison County General Hospital.
He was born July 14, 1923 in Como to the late Elmore
McWherter and Sudie Stubblefield McWherter. He was a
member of Barr’s Chapel CME Church in Como.
Survivors include two daughters, Deborah Haynes of Paris
and Willie Mae Payne of Indianapolis, Indiana; two
grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Mattie
McWherter and Elaine McWherter Taylor and two brothers,
Walter B. McWherter and Brooks McWherter.
James Vernon Smith
1921-2004
MCKENZIE: Services for James Vernon Smith, 82, were at
2:00 p.m., Friday, March 12 in the chapel of McKenzie
Funeral Home with Rev. Ron Harper and Billy Robinson
officiating. Burial followed in McLemoresville Cemetery.
Mr. Smith died Tuesday, March 9 at McKenzie Regional
Hospital.
He was born April 14, 1921 in Neboville to the late Jim
Henry Smith and Annie Mae Webb Smith. He married Rebecca
Holmes, who survives. Mr. Smith was a retiree of Milan
Arsenal and a painter for Parish Construction, until his
health prevented him from working. He was a World War II
army veteran and was a Christian.
In addition to his wife, he leaves one son, James
Kenneth Smith of Sanford, Florida; three daughters,
Janice Kay Robinson and Donna Lisa Smith of McKenzie and
Deborah Elaine Cox of Tiptonville; six grandchildren;
twelve great-grandchildren and one
great-great-grandchild; one brother, Joe D. Smith of
Memphis and two sisters, Fred Autry of California and
Mary Anna Frizzell of New Mexico.
He was preceded in death by one granddaughter; two
sisters and one brother.
Pallbearers were Kevin Robinson and Jeremy Cox,
grandsons; and Steve Ellis, Bill Clawson, Chris Keith
and Jon Davis, grandsons-in-law.
Memorials may be directed to the American Heart
Association.
Margaret T. Sherwood
1913-2004
MCKENZIE: Services for Margaret T. Sherwood, 90, were at
11:00 a.m., Saturday, March 13 at Cedar Avenue Chapel of
McKenzie Funeral Home with the Revs. Tony Janner and
Dennis Beal officiating. Burial was in Mt. Olivet
Cemetery.
Mrs. Sherwood, widow of Ira Sherwood, died Wednesday,
March 10 at McKenzie Regional Hospital.
She was born October 14, 1913 in Flintwood, Michigan to
the late Anna Kizer Kalafut and Joseph Kalafut. She was
a member of Grace Baptist Church.
Survivors include three daughters, Marjorie Sherwood
Matlock and Peggy Diane Wilson, both of McKenzie and
Carol Jean Tindell of Woodbridge, Virginia; two sons,
James Larry Sherwood of Union City and Robert Ira
Sherwood of Amarillo, Texas; ten grandchildren; eight
great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph Kalafut
and a sister, Ann Kruger.
Robert S. “Bob” Black
1930-2004
DENISON, TEXAS: Funeral services for Mr. Robert S. “Bob”
Black,73, were held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, March 4 at
Bratcher Funeral Chapel with Dr. Jim Bowden, pastor of Waples United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial was
in Cedarlawn Memorial Park in Sherman, Texas.
Bob was born in McKenzie on March 30, 1930 to Robert A.
and Johyne Lee Black. He graduated from McKenzie High
School and received his B.S. degree in business
administration from Memphis State University in 1953. He
moved to Ferris, Texas in 1954 where he met his wife,
Lura Belle McCord. They married on January 14, 1955. In
1956, they moved to Denison where Bob started his first
nursing home on Gandy Street. He later owned and
operated Denison Manor Nursing Home and Sherman Manor.
Bob worked for National Living Centers where he served
as vice-president. After losing his wife in 1972, he
retired to come home and raise his three young children.
Bob had numerous business investments in the late 1970’s
and 1980’s and again become involved in the nursing home
industry in Lufkin, Texas. In 1992 he retired and
returned to Denison where he resided until his death on
February 29 at his home in Denison.
Bob is survived by his sons, Robert Pratt Black and
Michael McCord Black, both of Denison; one daughter,
Rebecca Ann Wingfield of Hendrix, Oklahoma; one sister,
Joan Hunley of Milan and 10 grandchildren. |
